Re: Charlotte Pass 2012

Went on a daytripper today.
Excellent value, friendly staff, great hot choccies, fab skiing in the trees off the T-bar again and again and again and again ------ and again (the only lift open apart from the beginner poma and the magic carpet)
Maybe Guthries was iced up (or maybe it was too quiet to fire it up??)
Good day but frustrating.

Re: Charlotte Pass 2012

I feel your pain Tele. Guthries was open early but got too windy. Decided to stay in the lodge for the day. This morning was much better
woohoo.gif
had about 1 1/2 hours of fresh stuff before spreading out. Guthries was great, chair was good until they slowed it down, going back out soon.

Not that it really ever gets that crowded but I love it when there is fresh snow and Guthreis is closed..... takes about 15-20 minutes to skin up the lift line for fresh tracks all to yourself....

Oops. a few people hiked it today. Some twice
cool.gif
didnt remember it being so steep at the top, was heaps of fun. The skiing today on the groomed runs was some of the best I've had here. kids enjoyed night skiing last night, like skiing on 5cm of talc.
Just noticed the groomers cutting a new trail at Guthries, plus they did the trail back to the Tbar (was sketchy the last 2 days) Was an exhausting day here, skiing, sunshine, outdoor BBQs, beer, skiing. The tree runs back to the lodge were fantastic. So good we did it twice.

Re: Charlotte Pass 2012

Another huge sunny day, lots of groomed terrain. Very good quality even with the moderate temps.
Missed you by 5 minutes Sago, wanted to get you over but as it turned out I spat the dummy in the Standard (their words not mine. I prefer i didn't ski to my ability) Had to buy jugs of beer for the crew. Lost a few hours somewhere. Fantastic week, will post some pics when I get home.
Oakley in the Village today, built the road jump over the Guthries road, should be some good footage from that tomorrow.

Re: Charlotte Pass 2012

Agreed!!
Grooming today was most extsenive and best for the past 5 years.Including right of Guthries to bottom
Congrats to all involved.
Nidecker FYI, terrain park has also been narrowed.Still massive amount of resources went into building it for so few using it.Must admit they have done a great job on it.
Watch out for footage from road jump today..Never before have they used a groomer to build it.The run up has also been groomed.
What a day for doing it.

Really weird call? But hey, if they are on top of everything else, probably a small price?? Snow fences up near the T? Do they have "stand here" plates for the T-bar?

Re: Charlotte Pass 2012

Hi Nidecker,
Agree with you it's the wrong spot for terrain park, first timers cannot access one side of the hill because of it.but if you do build one make it look good for the snow cams.T bar loading does have a guide marker in place this year.
No snow fences near T as of yet, required IMO.

Re: Charlotte Pass 2012

Bit of a trip report from last week.
Transport was delayed due to a re-fueling tango, and was slow, but not a major inconvenience. Carol (our driver) was lovely. As it turned out only the T-Bar was running in the afternoon due to wind hold and most of us didnt bother skiing.

Sunday was one of the best days I've had at CPV in a few years. All the whome's were friendly despite having to work such a great day. Very few people on the hill, no lines, and all lifts were open.
CPV.jpg

Monday was a great day for pics, skiing some really nice groomed runs. They were caught short as they didn't expect temps to freeze overnight, but got enough done.
Tuesday/Wednesday was a thaw-freeze-thaw-freeze kind of deal. Off piste was a no go, but the grooming this year was the best for 4/5 years. They even groom some additional trails off the chair/TBar that the kids enjoyed. 5cm of new snow late Wednesday was the perfect setup for night skiing, the kids spending some time out there. (the poma derailed and it took 20mins to fix, but this can happen at CP. Bit like the 'snowball' getting a puncture on Sunday night.

CPV_2.jpg

Thursday/Friday were just fantastic bluebird days. High speed groomers and runs back through the trees. The Standard Race you buy bibs in order but race in any order ?
confused.gif
You end up standing there for 20-30 minutes unless you want to ski last.
Saturday looked like being another great day but we had to leave. For the first time in a few years I wasn't rushing for the exits.

Highlights - mother nature. Skiing with friends (I promised not to say old), the grooming and snow making efforts, friendliness of the staff. Being able to let the kids ski by themselves and return when they wanted.

Apart from Saturday the lifts were always running and Guthries breakdowns were so minimal to not be a problem. Kids enjoyed their ski school, hopefully the instructors stay on for a while as it was always part of CPV coming back each year and renewing your friendship with the staff. Seems less like child storage then? There was no kids race this year ? Used to be on a Thursday & younger kids loved it. Ski Patrol were out working and shovelling, but no rocks were marked on the hill
nono.gif
Was this a decision made a few years back ? They need to rope off mid station. loose boards and nails sticking up are dangerous.

Problems- still some, but this is CPV or CPSR (Ski Resort?) The terrain park was good for a down day (Tuesday) but it grew through the week to the point that on Friday when the Standard Race was run there was 5m to ski between the two and you had to avoid people watching the race on the hill.
P1060357.jpg

The park was used less and less as the week rolled on, but it required several Ski patrol hours a day to maintain (which is more time than it was skied on).
frown.gif
By Saturday they had reduced the park in size. When you see the one at Perisher front valley you just know that no serious park and pipe rider is going to travel to CPV for a day of riding.

The Chalet Shop- nice staff but problems getting milk/eggs etc. even if you are a Chalet Guest. You can order milk etc, but you only get it if the Chalet Chef has excess
confused.gif
This may change, but be warned if you are in a self catered lodge you need bring in what you need from Perisher. Go to the shop at Perisher Supermarket on your way in. Pygmy Lodge used up its season supply of long life in 2 weeks.

Stilwell still has the best coffee and lounge, lunches are great & huge. Good food, nice staff. Guests there also raved about the dinners.
P1060340.jpg

The massive lounge and coffee table from the Charlotte Adams Bar in the Chalet has gone? Super AMart has moved in...LOL and a velvet rope.

It was disappointing to see the Lodges half full on such a good snow week. 'CPSR' is heavily promoting day trippers, especially 2 for Tuesday and Total Thursday (o/snow, lifts, lunch, dinner, movie). The Chalet also had free skiing in July and discounted room rates. Lodges were unable to get any lift discounts to entice guests. Empty lodges...upcoming lease renewals come to mind? Why subsidise people for one or two days a season when you have 400 beds (and thousands of Lodge members) that can be filled for a week at a time? Lodge members with kids also book lessons and ski hire - unlike day trippers. CPV doesn't have to give them a free lunch.
confused.gif
confused.gif
Would make you wonder about viability of some lodges, but maybe that's the strategy? When the leases are up for renewal what happens then? Maybe a less viable Lodge is cheaper to buy, than build? Then offer these cheap deals? or house management/staff?...grassy knoll theory anyone?

Overall a really good week of skiing with kids, nice friendly staff all round (though the waving man was - well automated?). You do leave a little confused at some decisions - it is a 'village' not 'a pub with lifts' after all? ...but that has been the game in CPV for many years. "what I would do if I owned the resort"

If you can get out of the freestyle park long enough you will appreciate the grooming this year. (wot no sarcasms ?) Lots of empty runs and ski patrol that let you ski fast and in control. Or maybe they just didn't see us.

We probably wont see CPV this year as we have season passes at Thredders. Pity sounds like its a pretty decent season.

I have heard from a couple of lodge managers that it's very empty. Which makes for great skiing, but not great for the industry of CP

It's probably going to take a couple of good snow years to win some of the old customers back.

Great news as it hasn't really snowed at Perisher since this morning just some sago stuff(sorry)(matter of fact I could hear it hitting my helmet at times) on mt P, might have picked up 3 or 4 cm today

Not snowing at the moment but that could change as the wind has just picked up again

Re: Charlotte Pass 2012

Enjoyed another family ski week at Charlottes Pass. Getting there was the smoothest to date. As usual all the staff were great the young lasses dispensing smiles freely.

The best part was the weather:
Sun-Tue: Cold, sunny, no wind.
Wed-Thu: Windy, foggy, visibility poor sometimes but ~20cm fresh snow.
Fri: Cold, sunny, hardly any wind.

Had lots of runs with the kids early in the week, practiced turns in the trees when visibility was reduced, hit the Guthries Chutes on friday. Either I'm getting better at this lurk or the snow was especially easy to ski!

The only downside was the lack of punters. Apart from my kids, in 5 days I only shared the chairlift twice. The longest queue was 8 people. Very few in our lodge. But this week is in between the ACT school holidays and August. Looking forward to next year!

Those that could, did...

Re: Charlotte Pass 2012

Hi TBB,
You couldn't provide a more accurate description.
BTW the skiing the last few days has been superb.
Grooming has just topped it of,feedback by guest this year has been exceptional.
Only negative the guest have commented about is the loud music being played on the chair and T and size of terrain park and location with no access to the right of basin poma.
TBB what are your thoughts on the music?
I am not in favour of it except for being played during night skiing.
