Time to kickstart this thread......Will be interesting to see if the closure of Selwyn for 2020 creates more visitors to The Pass?!

A few pics from recent days during the rains to get the ball rolling.....

I've reconfigured the Telejoeys and my ski adventures from Selwyn to CP. Plan will be June LWE, July school hols, a week in early August and last week of the season which is first week of NSW school Sept hols. Mostly pending getting accommodation slots at desired Perisher lodge of course.

Having to pre-book (as in now, late Feb) daily oversnow is going to pretty much prohibit the potential for any impromptu ski trips. But living in the Illawarra and with Telejoey no. 1 now in high school it ain't really that much of an option anymore.

However that late Sept trip will be one that never would've been viable at Selwyn, so swings and roundabouts. Telejoey no. 2 asked me if they had flushing dunnies at CP (as opposed to Selwyn's stinky long drops). I think she was pleased I answered in the affirmative.

Is CP open June LWE and Sept? They generally open later and close earlier than Perisher.

June LWE likely to be iffy depending on snow agreed. Scheduled to run to Sunday of Oct LWE.

They are now compelled to open and close pretty much the same as PV.

    Unless PV do season extensions

Very limited snowmaking though. Unless there’s natural, I think it’s restricted to the little poma.

You've seen the other posts in this thread, I would suggest looking closely at those start and end of season trip dates, unless they have already confirmed to you Charlotte's will be open in some capacity at those times. They have tended to open a bit later and close a little earlier than Perisher and Thredbo in the past. Some Charlotte regulars who pop into this thread may be able to provide a better indication on what may be on offer at those dates.

Early June to early October now. I believe the head lease requires it.

That, of course is subject to available snow....

To me the idea of hanging out around snowless CP in early winter for a couple if days is more than enough. Very nice little spot, do a few walks, enjoy the cold mornings, maybe even visit Mt K with a bit of snow play on the summit.

Options @Donzah. CP has both track and wheel based oversnow vehicles.

It’s a much faster ride on the wheel version. About 6 minutes versus 45 on tracks.

For the sake of conversation, I skied up there last year and the season was quite reasonable.

Funnily enough, I was touring up Guthrie’s in December with the late season snowfalls. That’s the thing about the mountains, you just can’t predict the season ahead....

    CP is good.

    Make time to go sometime.

Great base for simple but awesome back country.

Or just hang & ski a village with no ques.

For people who have done day-trips before - is there usually an issue getting a carpark at the Perisher carpark for say a 9am oversnow?

This may be better off in the Perisher thread, but it's a bit crazy in there at the moment LOL

Just wondering if I'll need to try for a ski-tube ticket or take the risk of being able to get a park up at Perisher.

Weekend or midweek. Weekend you must be past the roundabout pre 7am. Get coffee or do something to kill time once you get to P

    Weekend...

by roundabout do you mean the Jindy one?!

YIKES that is not good. My biggest concern is leaving the dog at home for too long, no way am I prepared to get to Jindy before 7am!

Looks like I'll be trying for some skitube tickets

Yes. That’s in a normal year. With reduced skitube it will be worse. Once full at P, then the roadside parking commences trickling back down the road, with either a walk or shuttle bus ordinarily to get you to P base. I’ve never had to deal with that though so can’t offer more

Yes and time it with the booking of the overflow.

I'm not sure how much of an issue traffic and parking will be before July 13th.

Both Thredbo and Perisher must be operating at no more than 50% capacity.

Depends what day of the week. If your thinking weekend...... you’d want to be at PV by 8:00am. Otherwise...... forget it. I’d speculate that you would miss your booked ride to the pass getting there later on a weekend. There will be changes to the oversnow, necessary health precautions etc. That will take some time so the timetable, sketchy at the best of times could be a little messy.

Hello all, just wondering about your experiences of Charlotte Pass in the school holidays? We had been planning on taking our kids down to Baw Baw but with the evolving COVID situation in Melbourne would prefer to now stay in NSW! Not a chance at getting Perisher or Thredbo tickets but figure Charlotte's might just have availability?

If I grab the current Groupon (which I really should have brought a few days ago instead ) would there likely be oversnow availability in the second week of the school hols (From July 13th)?

What time in the morning would we need to leave Jindabyne to get a park at Perisher?

Trying to figure out if it's all going to be just too hard this year! Wonder if the kids would just be happy with Corin Forest....;)

I've never been to CP before, but we did get Groupons this year and will be heading up next week. When I called they were flat out on the phones booking people in, and as I understand it they are reducing the number of people per oversnow, so it might be worth giving them a call to ask about availability? I am fairly sure I saw fine-print on the Groupon saying if you can't get your desired days within 7 days of buying the Groupon then you get a refund.

Corin Forest is pretty fun too though! Depending on what level skier they are :)

I rang up the booking office to ask about some logistics - recorded message told me I was 23rd in the queue. I think many people trying to sort stuff at last minute and the non-online booking system is struggling with demand.

My 2 cents on doing a day at CP and having a great experience (plenty have related negative experiences especially with kids).
PPP required more than the other resorts.
Only go with quality snow - ie snowed recently, think frozen snow, limited grooming.
Never book without a solid forecast for good conditions i.e. Never more than 4 -7 days prior - there's not a lot of choices to get out of bad weather.
Plan on getting out to CP on the oversnow between 7 - 8.30am (first Tbar open 8.30)(30mins to get there)
Leave CP 2.30 - 3.30pm - gets real cold when sun goes behind the ridge and you don't want to sit around waiting for a later shuttle. Plus you get out of the carpark before the majority of Perisher punters.
CP can be a great experience or it can be a dud, choice is yours depending on planet alignment.
    Good luck to all

If the riding is not on walk out to the restaurant ruin. This is a key landmark and knowing route out and back will be helpful later to ride further out from the restaurant ruin.

That’s a good idea! We are heading up on the 4th and that seems to have some weather associated with it judging from the weather thread, so will have to make sure it’s not a white-out before going for a walk

Having a look in poor (not horrendous) weather on a walk is also very good training. If it is snow falling not so good as you will step into a creek or tarn.

Thanks for that - they are both beginner skiers - only just got their ski legs on last year. They got six days on the slopes but the youngeat would have spent about half of that time eating snow! Might just grab the Groupon and see how we go!

Decided to take them to Corin tomorrow too for about of a 'refresher'

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately school holidays are set times so don't have the luxury of checking out the forecast and cherry picking the days. Weekends often involve planning as my other half is a shift worker who is often working them so as much as I'd love to book based on the weather it's just not possible so just have to book and hope for the best!

    Corin sounds perfect then!

I called CP yesterday at 9:06am, and I was 16th in the queue, and I was on hold for 1h 36min. SO if you do get the groupon make sure you call right on 9am to get into the queue earlier! (I originally tried calling at 8:59am and it went to voicemail so make sure it’s at 9 lol)

Just wondering what folks have heard about speed riding (little paragliders with skis) at Charlotte Pass this year. I've heard that it might be allowed at the resort this year, but unsure if that is with appropriate instructors or if anyone with a suitable licence is able to fly there?

    Thanks.

Today Charlotte Pass announced that they are replacing the Guthries Poma with a chairlift, with the contract awarded to Doppelmayr - being discussed in this thread
