After a morning in Thredbo, I headed to Charlotte Pass for a few walks. Here are some photos I took

Does anyone know what the rusted structure in the last picture is from?

Ruins of the original lift.....

But not the ill fated lift from Thredbo Valley to the mid station accessible out from Stilwell. Then there was the other link from that station down to the Charlotte Pass village.

They cited it as the one of the worlds longest lifts (at the time) but it was actually 2 lifts. Only lasted 2 seasons. 1964 Winter put paid to its future....

As an aside..... It’s an easy walk from the roundabout (or village) up to Stilwell then out to the ruins. Follow the pole line. You can see top of Thredbo lifts easy from there. It’s one of the stops if your heading to Twin Valleys from the pass in Winter - at least that’s one route I take.

That’s good to know, just booked our first trip to the Snowy Mountains in green season for a couple of days in mid April. Hope to explore though we will have a couple of young children coming along so may limit how far we can walk:)

The staff accom building down the bottom was the old CP station. The Ranger Station stop on the Alpine Way was the Thredbo Valley Bottom Station. If you look at them both they're pretty much identical.

Will just miss you. Booked for 24-31 July and 4-11 September. And have told lodge managers to put me on speed dial for any casual vacancies if the snow is good.

No snow here at the moment.

Bugger. oh well. See what pans out i guess. My main focus will be touring MR in ok weather and resort if its crappy weather although crappy can also mean good freshies.

Went up for a look yesterday with a few neighbours. Winds measured at top station 45-50 km/h.

It was bitterly cold due to the wind chill even with a few layers. Started to rain as we descended on the chair which runs pretty slow for foot passengers. The safety bar on our chair failed and with the rain it was about the slowest chair ride I can recall. But all good just the same. Better than the previous 3 days of heat.

Folks working in Stilwell where we had coffees (6 bucks a coffee - it was a decent brew) said the weekends had been busy. That’s good I reckon. The village could be much better utilised in Summer.

So will the crowds & fly's be gone by the time I'm there at the start of September?

Two weeks booked (Last July and first September) and lodge managers have me on speed dial for any casual vacancies. Woot!

We're booked for first week of September as well.

Got put off by prices everywhere else, so spending couple of weeks in the Wet Tropics first instead of snow this year. Not going to help my backcountry fitness.

Is it worth having a day at CP if we’ve got 5 days based in Jindy in August? Good hill for first day to get our ski legs back? We would intend on at least a couple of days in Thredbo and we’ll make a visit to Perisher too.
Is it as easy as jumping in the car and driving to the resort from Jindy for a day?

No. You can only access by oversnow from Perisher and you’ll need to prebook the oversnow both ways. And it can’t be done online so not simple in anyway. A fun place though, small.

No, it’s not easy to access, yes it’s worth a visit.

Fozzie Bear - I was pondering travelling to CP for a few days in late July to use it as a base for some touring (perhaps Blue Lake and surrounds or the Northern side of Twin Valleys depending on the weather/snow etc). Would you suggest I just book at the Chalet or is there a lodge or lodges which could work just as well?

@Slowman Try one of the club lodges first (see list here - https://charlottepass.com.au/resort-accommodation/ ). Most are fully catered and are a pretty good atmosphere. That said, my lodge (Targangil) was booked out pretty early, so I'm hoping for some late cancellations so I can get extra value out my season pass :D

Have stayed at Jerrabomberra and can recommend it.

a warning about ticket blitz - couldnt get on to charlotte pass for days at a time last year to book (bookings needed to be made on the phone). so bought a few but could only ultimately use one.
not usually a problem in a normal year, but the issue persisted throughout the whole season without a reaction by increasing call centre staffing or better systems.
then they closed.

Chit chat was that they were moving to a fully self service online booking system for day tix to remove the phone booking requirement. But dunno how that progressed.

Thanks for the heads-up, was thinking about purchasing, on that basis may reconsider.
