I stuffed the next part of our day up. We headed back to the hotel for a cooldown and didn't watch the time. We tried to climb to Delicate Arch and I think I got about halfway and went to far right in the dark and well everyone was well and truly tired so we conceded defeat. I had hoped to light paint the arch in a small led light, not the headlamp technique that so many use and also get the Milky Way in the background. It would have been the perfect night.

On the way down I took this.

And this one is looking down. Car leaving car park is the bright bottom light. Storm on horizon with lightning lighting up the cloud and moon on the right with plane. Busy photo. Not great but not bad I guess.

    Day 13

Long time between edits. Busy at work means less time here.

Today all of us tried something we have never done before. We tried zip lining just above Moab. It is a short steep drive up in an ATV to their walk in area for the runs.

Walking along the slick rock and the views while not high were pretty cool. We had Moab to one side and the La Sal Mountains with the usual monsoon storm building up on the other. I was a bit nervous with all the metal around but they assured me it was safe. I wasn't convinced.

It was sooo hot Crystal. After the river stuff, the temps soared into the mid 40's and probably higher with the heat coming up off the ground. We still had heaps of fun but I reckon we would have covered a lot more ground in Arches and surrounds had we had some cooler weather. At least it was a dry heat with zero humidity.

    Day 14

We slept in but not too bad that I missed this next adventure in time. Let me say a tourist bus trying to get to this place by sunrise tried to overtake me at 70 miles an hour. Knowing there were windy twists and turns on the road ahead I was annoyed he tried to. Anyway I managed to beat the impending bus crowd to Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park. I didn't quite get there for the proper sunrise but I got dam close. Very very happy with this shot as I patiently waited for turdburgers standing right up next to it that blocked the view. If everyone stood back in a semi circle they would get the shot and not spoil it for others. Seriously some stupid, selfish people there.

Here you go - Mesa Arch - just after sunrise...

The monsoon storms were very evident ahead of us as we drove towards the higher mountains.

A bit of a hiccup undone all the good work getting to our next destination Telluride. The above storm dumped crap loads of rain on the parched mountainsides and well I did think as we crossed the San Miguel River several times that it looked very very muddy. Ahead of us near Sawpit was a very big mudslide so we waited almost 4 hours until they could clear the road. We didn't know too much but there were clues.

And once we were able to get through we drove under escort through the sections. It was decently slippery in parts.

    Day 15

Telluride - we didn't give ourselves enough time to see it. It's a very pretty town in a box canyon with some amazing four wheel driving. Sadly with the storms and the unstable ground they closed some of those drives up to the high passes. I had planned to pre-book those but glad I didn't as I had been worried about getting my money back. This place would be sensational to see in person during autumn and winter.

Not that I can see looking at the shots I still have to work on. I had planned that drive to Telluride with little stops to try and get half a day of daylight there as we were cramming things in. The mudslides undid my first day plans.

Oh, it reminds me of something on that drive. We passed Hole in the Rock and some abandoned gas station and I kept thinking where have I seen that. About 10 minutes later - Ding - Transformer Movie with Mark Wahlberg. Both those spots were in the movie including that abandoned gas station - where Mark's character has that heart to heart with his daughter's boyfriend while they are hiding out. I wish I stopped just so I could hey I was there but I was on a mission. Funny enough that night in Telluride that movie was on and I was able to prove to wifey they were indeed in the movie.

More from Telluride. You will notice how dark it was. The thunder claps echoed something sensational. Because of the storms we didn't venture too far from the sheltered areas. Not that it really mattered, as we were well within lightning range anyway. it just made us feel better.

    Not sure about that name.

The kids some distance from me yelled at me to run up to where they were to photograph a deer. So I race up the run, all huffy and puffy from the run and...they were laughing their heads off...

Quite right. Telluride Trail is a boring as batshit cat track. (Rac)Coonskin is a nifty fall line black run that is usually groomed every couple of days. A heap of fun with a foot of fresh.
That looks like See Forever, a fast cruiser from the top to tye bottom.

Headed back down to get back to our unit and walked along the river. In higher flows you can tube down the river.

Man the way I am going it will be winter seriously! I edit a bit each weekend between real life stuff. That afternoon with a lot of the off road passes closed we head out to Alta Lakes. It is a pretty tame road in the dry though there is a very narrow bit right at the beginning on an exposed ridge, which is not much wider than one car. After that it felt like I was on a normal dirt road though I imagine it would be quite slippery in the wet.

Before getting to the lakes you get to the old ghost town of Alta. Sort of reminds me of Bodie in the Sierra but in worse condition.

We didn't give ourselves enough time here. And the next update is the wasted day :( I wanted to see the Million Dollar Highway and it took us away from Telluride for the whole day. In hindsight I should have stayed put and explored the surrounds and town more. Me and wanting to see too much. Less is more and well can't do much about that now.
