Hey BC crew. A friend of mine recently moved to Tumut and I’m trying to figure out what is the closest reliable ski touring, with a decent bit of downhill. Doesn’t have to be anything too crazy. If there was something on par with the Paralyser that would be amazing.

For XC there are trails between 3 Mile Dam and where Selwyn used to be. There is also a firetrail heading south from Selwyn. I suppose you could do downhill on the Selwyn runs.

    Thanks

Selwyn could be a good option actually. Although I was hoping for something even closer to Tumut

Thanks rowdyflat. I’ll look into it. Only an hour twenty from Tumut, so it’s certainly in the mix if there’s nothing closer.

Not much that is close to Tumut. Selwyn area would be quickest access but it's not that steep and has limited cover on the steeper areas. To be honest Thredbo and perisher areas would probably be the best options. All the west side of the range with reliable snow cover is not easily accessible. Best is probably up grey mare firetrail from Olsen's lookout road. Would require considerable hiking to get up there.

I must say the fire has groomed the undergrowth nicely around Selwyn. Perhaps there will be some options here. Things always look steeper without snow. Even racecourse looked steep to me this afternoon.

What about Tantangara? It's a nice trip up when conditions allow. Not sure if it has any decent runs though. (And burnt now.)

I can’t find anything about skiing at Tantangara online. Are there hills surrounding the dam?

It often snows down to Yarrangobilly, even Black Perry's lookout but usually only covers the scrub. Even up around Kiandra you usually need to be there the next day. Elliot way closed at Kiandra and Tantangara rd also closed at moment.

I believe the gates are closed to Cabra at the moment. So doubt you would get in.

And there are gates to close Selwyn as well IIRC.

Sorry i don't think you will have much luck.

Sorry, I should have specified: Mount Tantangara. Access is from the highway just east of Kiandra, a pullout just uphill from the bridge over Eucumbene River. There is/was a signposted summer walk which shows the way in winter. But yeah, probably no-go this year due to fire damage (Kiandra area got smashed), assuming we even get to ski. And also not always in condition; you need a decent Three Mile Dam snow-depth reading.

A lovely daytrip but a bit tame for downhill I would think. Southern aspect is steeper but I suspect the trees could a bit too dense.

It’s 15ks on a MTB from the gate on olsens rd to grey mare ft, not bad maybe an hour? What’s the pinnacle track like up to pinnacle mountain?

I had a look back through my photos looking that way from the main range and there is cover on the Pinnacle in most of them. On the SE side at least. No idea what the track is like but its an old road so shoud be OK on foot or a bike. Its probably still used by NPWS.

I thought @Untele-whippet may have been up that way some years back??

Possibly a bit steep to bother with a MTB and in the weather I’d be likely to use it you’d fe hitting shin pretty quick. If you get a chance to post a pic that would be good old man

The Pinnacle Trail is decent quality from my recollection. Pretty steep at the start though! Snowy Hydro probably use it to access the cloud seeder at the top. I certainly don't trust the Olsens/Geehi Dam Road though, after it was gated at Alpine Way for several years running a while back; I'd call ahead to NPWS Khancoban before going. (Closed now due to fires e.g.)

Pinnacle FT would be too steep to ascend on a MTB.
1 day to get into Grey Mare from the start of the FT but the gate is locked at Olsons Lookout in winter.
Lovely walking/ touring along the entire Grey Marr Range with fantastic views of the MR Western Faces.
Grey Hill Cafe was a nice place to stay.

Perhaps we need a working party to cut a track in up one of the spur lines.

Sounds like a plan. So is the gate locked at the AW or OL?

Olsen's Lookout road is closed at the intersection with the Alpine way in white season, so more walking would be necessary.

My drive way at home looks steep to me because my XC ski skills are pre season rusty.

Anything closer and the altitude drops rapidly. Selwyn would be great but not of Paralyser size

That road is closed in white season. Unless you have a Mtn. bike, dirt bike ,wings or can XC ski in from there walking would be likely.

Policy used to be: gated at Olsens lookout. I definitely parked at the start of Pinnacles Trail once to go skiing. Has this changed? I'd be calling to check.

That road was shut at the Alpine Way when I went up to Thredbo , Perisher and Island Bend in Sept. 2019.

I've found it open in winter and closed as well. The one time I planned the pinnacle track it was closed and I was too lazy to bother.

I wonder if it depends on road conditions? I's a pretty manky road at the best of times. I don't know that anyone can make a definitive statement on the basis of one experience.

My understanding is it’s a routine seasonal closure. This is noted on a map buried in NSWwhateverwewanttocallroadssndstuffthismonth Dept.

Olsen's lookout was open to vehicles in April 2019 when I went and hiked up Hannel's spur with @Chaeron and the G man .

Closure is normally long weekend June to long weekend October. So yes open in April as you observed.
