So where do people stop for a good meal in scenic Coma on their way through?

Had a thoroughly unsatisfying Chinese meal on my way through last night and given I can forsee regular dinner stops this season, what's the collective wisdom?

If going through in the daytime, Kettle and Seed is a good cafe. Turn right at the second roundabout with the newsagent on the corner. Good coffee, great snacks. I love their vegetarian frittata slice with bacon.

Agree with The Alpine, however can be busy on friday nights, expect a wait.

I saw advertising for The Cooma Hotel last weekend and i never knew they did food (the drive thru near woolies) looks like they are trying to up their game so keen to try. (although maybe i have just never noticed before?)

Also for chinese my mum and a few others regularly drive to cooma just have the chinese at the strip mall where KFC is - apparently the best in the area (although i have never had it!) Those on here who know my mum would agree she knows her stuff!

Another vote each for Kettle and Seed and The Alpine.

We always stop at least once a trip at Kettle and Seed. Toasted fruit loaf is yum, coffee good.

I mostly stop at that cafe that takes themselves a touch too seriously through lack of imagination on my part - The Lott?

In fairness to them they're consistently ok, and attempts at other places have been average.

Extremely busy around the usual times - morning tea and before work.

The Thai upside above the visitors centre (right hand side heading south) is very good. They also have $10 lunch specials which are also very good.

There's a cafe in the arcade where Birdsnest is, which does great lunches as well.

The Lott has new owners and has gone downhill. Have twice walked out due to lack of service, it's always freezing, no more free wifi, meals have gotten smaller and no more split bills. It used to be a regular for a group of us, but no more.

Kuma pies make the best pies around.

Japanese has shut and has been replaced with a dessert cafe, haven't tried it.

There's also a Namaste on the left near the Commonwealth bank, same people that own the Jindabyne one.

Alpine has great pub food.

Snowy Mountains coffee, I buy it for home. Lady that owns the cafe roasts it herself, used to operate out of a shed at Polo Flat and supplies lots of places.

Ahhh!!! @chicski THAT explains it.
The Lott used to impress with its good wholesome rustic food, QBW I was less than impressed. Coffee was mediocre too. Would've been better waiting until the Qantas Lounge at the airport - now that's saying something LOL

Yeah, disappointing and I've given them a couple of chances.

First roundabout opp the park, the Beatnik cafe? Just closed in the last few weeks. We used it a lot, because it was handy, good food and coffee, and the old Pommy grandma who sort of worked there was a real character.

A shame as the Okonomiyaki there was the closest to what I had in Japan.

Chinese is a bit hit and miss, the one next to the park has had a few different owners/operators over the last few years. It was okay for a while. There is also one on the main strip, I've been there a couple of times, but they cook certain dishes a bit differently to the way I like.

The pizza shop on the main strip near the roundabout is good. (I think it's capital pizzas I might have that wrong though)

I don't generally stop for a meal in Cooma. Usually just a "comfort stop" at Maccas on the way to Jindy. I buy a cappuccino as quid pro quo for using their loo.

On trips back north we usually time it to arrive at Canberra or Queanbeyan at meal time. The Griffith Vietnamese Restaurant is very much worth finding. ;)

But the couple of times we've eaten in Cooma we've had no complaints. When my son was in hospital there in 2014 I had a good meal from a chinese restaurant, but I was a bit stressed at the time and can't recall the name or location, other than that it was on the eastern (Coles) side of the road and was a proper sit-down restaurant with predominantly white decor.

We've found the asian noodle bowl place in the Coles mall perfectly acceptable too. Quick takeaway, eaten in the park while the ducks begged for scraps.

The food van in the Rhythm carpark was good last year for lunch and coffee when we had a down Saturday and went to the movies instead.

Had the strange experience of being in Cooma for late lunch today instead of later in the evening. Had seen this thread and was keen to try Kettle & Seed, alas they are closed on Sunday. Bakery near Beatnik was closed. Beatnik closed as above, that had saved us before. Some little fete happening in the park, Rotary wanted 5 bucks for a slice of bread and sausage. Had given up and were going to get maccas after a stop at Rhythm but then found the caravan at Rhythm and had some delicious pies and a good coffee. They do some pork rolls and other stuff too. Not sure opening hours

Which Chinese place was it, the one near capital pizza I reckon is pretty good. Alpine hotel is good, beef ribs go alright and have trivia on a Thursday night. PD Murphy cafe is reasonable for breakfast, only ever had drinks and toast from there though. Oh and capital pizza is good, but not a fan of their ribs.

Based on kylep's and my experience, it'd be worth looking at the Rhythm carpark to see if the caravan was open.

It never looks open to me!

With our 2 - 3pm departure time on Fridays from SYD. Cooma seems like a good place to stop.

I'm intentionally not going to say which Chinese place it was... you know, be constructive, focus on the positives, not have Ian and Richard sued for slander etc.

Cooma hotel , around the corner opposite the courthouse, used to serve the best Tooheys Old in the mountains.
And I agree about the ex Servos club. Good bistro. Although I once made the mistake of telling the guy in the kitchen that he was a good cook. He looked offended and stated" I am zee chef!"

Cooma Hotel has been renovated and yes it also has good meals. Not really a fan of the club.

Not Cooma but Collecter, A place called grandmas, good food and coffee, set on a hill in an olive farm
stopped there on the June long weekend.
Plenty of parking even with a camper in tow, clean toilets, around half way mark for my trips.

Grandmas little bakery in Sydney (Alexandria) makes amazing coffee and great food. We stopped into Grandmas on the Farm (Collector) on the LWE hoping for some great coffee and maybe a snack. They have the same menu and make it clear they are the same people. I was horrified by the coffee we received - too hot and bad taste. I hope it's a one-off but it was enough to ensure we won't ever want to stop in there again.

We used to eat at Grandmas at Collector in the off season, travelling through the day. Had several disgusting experiences there where it was clear they did not give a shit about customers, and we have not been back.

I went into the Lott in March and it was Arctic. Seriously freezing.

I've been to the Blossom Chinese Restaurant a few times since it opened a year or two back and it's been pretty good - much more authentic and consistent (relatively) than the others. Shantung chicken was pretty good as was the eggplant hot pot and salt & pepper tofu.
