A spreading virus, community uncertainty, a recession .... just add snow.

Staff accommodation, 2 or 3 to a room, casual wage structure, single supermarket, indoor life, people from everywhere, reliance on international staff, car park camping, will be a very interesting winter IMHO

That will be a worry for the GPs at our practice, even if not so much for themselves but for their partners at home who may be at risk.

As to the topic I had been planning on an Epic Pass for this season but now doubt I will do so.

They are still advertising and selling the discounted epic passes. Me thinks they will sell a lot less this year, given the uncertainty

They have always sold them right up to and including May. No difference this year.

I think that this is everyones biggest concern right now. No-one really knows what is happening. How many cases there are, what the potential spread actually is, how bad the virus really is etc.

The combination of misinformation and media hype is making it difficult to determine a real opinion based purely on facts. Even the numbers should be taken carefully as they may be low or in some cases high. As of this morning there were 60,000 that had recovered. Using that extrapolation, about 60 Australians have recovered. We havent been given the statistic on how many australians are actually recovered. The question I asked myself is if you don't buy it, and it doesn't get that bad, how much more is it going to cost you??

Possibly. but then again most of them have already been sold.

Your claim included "they are still discounting" they always have at this time of the year

wonder how that will work. national parks aren't, they are state run.
also would be a total farce if it covers national parks (ie knp) but not vic resorts just because of how state governments have divided up the mgt of their crown lands

I'm beginning to think that whether I get to use my seasons passes, or get refunds is the least of my worries

Accommodation is booking up I think we had 80plus days booked when I last checked.

I don’t think the resorts will offer refunds on season tickets unless you have insurance.

This scenario is looking more likely each day.

Will the masses turn to the backcountry and are we going to see a run on Clif bars in the shops?

if they don't open at all i think they will have to do something.
credit for next year would be a good thing to offer even if they do open but people don't come

I returned from Japan (Niseko) on the 19th of Feb then developed symptoms over the coming days.

I spoke to my GP who didn't want to see me so I called the Health Direct hotline.

They instructed me to go to the hospital emergency ward and I was put in isolation while I was swabbed and blood taken.

Ended up being Influenza B which knocked me around a bit.

    agreed. it's a season pass.

still think that credits for next year, or some pro rata of that, would be sensible. if people think they've lost all their money because of the virus, many won't be in a hurry to but a season pass again soon. a credit would get a lot of them back

Are the queues at many lifts at Oz ski resorts in the school holidays a "non essential mass gathering of 500 or more people"?

While I did receive a refund for my wife, son and myself for one day lost after my wife dislocated her elbow last year, I don't like the methodology that Perisher/Vail apply.

If you have a multi-day pass, rather than dividing the cost by the number of days, they subtract the cost of the same pass with one fewer days and refund that.

    e.g
    5 day lift and lesson = $559
    1/5th cost refund = $111.80
    Vail/Perisher refund = $559 - (cost of 4 day pass) = $559 - $492 = $67

By the same notion, I suspect that any calculation for season pass refunds would be based on the number of days available at full walk up cost - if that's more than the cost of the Epic Aus Pass, then no refund for you!

500 person maximum. Flu like virus in winter. High density crowds inside buildings like the Perisher Centre. Ski Tube passengers breathing in humid wet environment. Gates locked at Sawpit and Alpine Way, open to essential traffic only. Realistically there will no provisions to make secure a few skiers each day - too expensive and the logistics for such a small industry when so many others are already affected. Let us hope the 500 max lifts prior.

I also tested negative to Coronavirus (so now out of isolation) but they didn't tell me what type of Influenza I have. From what I've heard about Coronavirus symptoms, I'm kinda wishing I did have it as they are MUCH milder and it would be something I don't have to worry about any more (I think? - can you catch it more than once????). I'm now into my 10th day of this flu and it's not giving up on it's influence over my body without a fight.

    cancel?

i don't know about thredbo but pretty sure that is not an option for epic. when you pay the first instalment you commit to paying the balance when due. it's not just a deposit

Situation is fluid, nobody knows where this is going. The situation in Italy was a wake up call for all western countries as was the cancellation of the US basketball for professional sport.

Ski resorts will suffer big time IMO with the peak of flu season & virus likely coming together during peak snow season.

Edit: I hope I am wrong BTW

Ikon pass has a cancellation policy. You lose the deposit and there’s an admin fee. But theoretically I could use my 5 days at Thredbo before the end of August and then cancel. The payment plan runs until September.

I'm pretty sure last year people were calling and cancelling before the rest of the payment was due, just meant to lose your $50 deposit (EDIT: for Thredbo)

    Yeah sorry I meant Thredbo.

But still, it might not be possible anyway, I was just going off a somewhat sketchy memory of people saying last year they just called and lost their deposit
