Some minutes ago, I posted a new thread in CV. It doesn't show up in Active Topics, although I can see it if I go to the CV forum, so it's there. Any reason for this?

Yep. (I got your message direct this morning Tecks, I'll just reply here).

    It's a feature. I implemented a few months ago.

Read my three posts and the conversation that continues here in this thread

In the last couple of years Active Topics has effectively become the homepage of this site. It is the #1 page when measured on an annual basis due to the year round traffic it gets (v's the actual homepage, snowcams & reports which dominate for only three months a year).

Previously, highly 'insensitive' threads emanating out of CV would dominate Active Topics and with the move to a subs model I felt they did not do the representation of the community any favors.

Now I'm sure some of you will think it is unnecessarily sanitizing and another loss to the PC brigade. However the primary objective is to retain new members - without which we all just grow old together and play dogems with our mobility scooters until the forums eventually close.

Personally, I haven't missed the noise from CV dominating active topics, it is after all, a forum that caters to a minority, albeit a passionate and highly active minority.

    Thanks @DbSki and others. :(
So, if you want a thread ignored, put it in CV. If you want it out there, put it in BP. Makes sense.

Let me just point out that it has taken you three months to notice whilst being active within CV.

No one else has brought it up either in that time and yet CV has managed to maintain the rage despite missing from Active Topics.

I also said it was an experiment and that BP and UP may be included. I think those to sub-forums have become superfluous and the whole CV space needs cleaning up. So may likely re-org to be just two forums, one which 'garbage collection' and is hidden and the really nasty shit gets moved into the hidden forum as it pops up in CV ---- or something like that.

I would have thought Bear Pit would have the insensitive threads, IIRC that was one of the reasons it was created to take some of the crap out of CV.

edit: I noticed :p (but didn't mention publicly)

DB makes a valid point about garbage out the back of the restaurant - and my example that /r/gonewild (and many many other subreddits) never ever get threads on Reddit homepage is perfectly valid.

There are perhaps half a dozen regulars that look at the forums with a UX eye and make valid observations and DBski is one of them - due to his previous life in consumer music software. I like his observations on UX, they are often on point.

Kinda, it was to be the 'politics only' zone with near zero moderation, which it has mostly held, but curiously Bear Pit became kinda tame.

That makes sense. Now I know why almost no one looked at the important thread
We need to talk about the ducks and why there were so few comments on the important social insights it unveils.

trying to figure out what forum would be better for it. maybe Arrangements or Flights (of fancy). i certainly didn't see it till i went looking in CV yesterday.

I think what we have learnt is that CV is only for flame wars and anything non-snow that can be sensibly discussed might as well be in convo. sad.

The reason being that none of the threads appeared in Active Topics. It wasn't until I posted a thread there that I saw that it didn't appear. I suspect there are many others who would have participated in threads had they been aware they existed in the first place. A bit hard when those threads are all but invisible. Anyway, I'm certain I haven't posted in CV in the 3 months it was invisible.

I was thinking further about this. The page I have bookmarked is Active Topics (which isn't that easy in XF as it appends things to the link each time), once I'm there I pretty much reload it to see what is happening in the forum. I only go into the specific sub forums if I'm making a post - which is how I noticed CV topics weren't appearing. If it doesn't appear in active topics, it pretty much doesn't exist for me unless something draws my attention to it, like a mod report.

A bit like fb filtering in that way.

This is the correct URL to bookmark - it is the one the 'Active Topic' buttons use. The url will dynamically personalise itself every time so you can't bookmark the destination page that results after clicking it.

This is definitely the case. If it's excluded from Active Topics then it never gets bubbled to the top and revealed serendipitously.

That does not mean everything should get revealed. It's ok to have side doors. Editors of major News sites have way more daily content than can fit on homepage and that's why the 'Editor' role of homepage has so much influence on shaping a papers voice and market position.

Maybe... but not really. I don't think wholesale exclusion for everyone comes even close to the 'filter bubble' effect of FB's algo's

Culture Vulture: Politics, history, theology, current affairs, science & the arts... all the high-brow stuff.
Bear Pit: An area devoted to political discussion. Do NOT enter here if you are thin-skinned. Discussion is very robust.

Why censor history, the arts and science? Politics is already relegated to BP. Surely that's where the problems are largely. Putting threads about current affairs or the arts (and other threads which don't get a lot of input to keep them at the top) in Convo will ensure they get lost. Censor BP, but not CV where discussion is meant to be civilised. If people can't keep it civilised either send them on a holiday or stop them accessing CV.

    Why censor anything?

It's an experiment, it took you lot three months before noticing and raising an issue, so it's not like Weather or Conversation suddenly got hidden from Active Topics. No key metric was harmed in the implementation of this experiment.

It basically works for the purpose of the experiment - shit threads dont get more air than they deserve, and now, as I have been talking to, I'm going to refine it. I concur it is too blunt in it's current implementation.

In the mean time, use this link

Lots of shit threads in Convo get more air than they deserve. And lots of potentially good threads in CV have got very little air.

    It’s not.

    But I see her point.

It’s like inadvertently blocking your annoying friend on Facebook. You don’t even notice it for months, then when you realise what you’ve done you realise that among the nonsense they post on the daily you’ve missed a few things you’d really like to have known about.

    I hadn’t noticed.
But I’ve since gone to CV and checked out what I’ve missed and will now add it to my checklist. Active Topics is my go to, so I’d miss CV otherwise.

ok - So Bear Pit is now hidden from Active Topics. CV is now revealed.

Bear Pit is now both POLITICS & RELIGION

    Uncertainty Principle
is now exclusively for ALL science topics.

Mods will be asked to move things as appropriate - I have already moved a bunch of stuff

Anything in CV that is whimsical and not 'high brow' will get moved to Conversation. Eg. "We need to talk about the ducks" just got moved to Convo.

    Look..

none of the threads in this forum ever get 'hard' categorised because it's all folksonomy, not taxonomy.

To the extent that Climate Science is 'Current topical conversation' I don't care, nor am I going to prescribe, whether it should be listed within UP or CV.

I'm going to give that call to you. So you call it. (Feel the power & OWN it!!!)

Name a thread and give me a one word reply. CV or UP ?

I'll move accordingly to your jurisdiction.

(either way it's visible in Active Topics should it be active -- and the title is what drives discovery - nothing else - I been running this place a long time, microcontent is everything).

may I suggest that if bear pit is going to be separated from other threads and not as easily accessed via the acknowledged 'home page', there be a link in the blue ribbon next to active topics?

For me, up until Friday, Active tropics showed what I thought was everything, now its just fluff topics from Convo etc

How do I get an uncensored list of Active or Newest topics so I don't have to weed through the mindless fluffery of "I went to Japan" or "I just discovered Perisher carpark in Summer"

Have you sold out to Suckerberg ? :crap:

    What
    edited to correct my misunderstanding

    @Richard
    said earlier
There have been a few iterations. As of today Active Topics gets you everything except bear pit and uncertainty principle, in an attempt to not overehelm new subscribers. I set up bookmarks for quick access to this these. CV itself is now included in Active Topics.

I'm not agreeing, just speculating on the rationale. @Richard said UP would be widened to all science, presumably including the politics of it. Personally I think UP should be left asis and kept in Active Topics, and the politics of science could be sent off to the pit. I don't know how often there are moderation problems in UP - i thought it was working ok as it was
