Was planning a car shuttle and DHG side country adventure for wife and kid tomorrow morning? Thought a quick query to the collective brains trust re any areas to watch out for or if not a good idea given the loading out there?

I would have thought wind scour would be a bigger problem.

No problem at all I'd think, it's not steep enough. I'd be a bit more concerned about navigation - do your best to stay right on the crest of the ridge for as long as you can, if you drop off to either side (especially avoid dropping too far skier's left), you can end up in thick, steeper trees that the wife & kid may not appreciate.

Beautiful up there today. No avi risk, as Sbm say too shallow to slide unless in some of the gullies maybe. Good skin track up from the road (unless the snowshoers I saw heading off this avo trashed it, but it was fairly solid. Not sure wife and kids would enjoy the tight trees and deep snow though. Or were you coming from Karels? Another cruiser option is head up the cascades trail for a km or so and turn left up the glades leading to the ridge overlooking Thredas.

Was going to shuttle a car up early and take them down from Karel's...all very solid skiers but just wanted to give them a taste of side country.

You got some nice untracked turns in before the traverse across thru the trees. Next time I'd hang a bit more left higher still from where you dropped into that glade

Thanks @Gimp. First time down and it is a surprisingly big ridge line and so many possible lines...also some big fat pow skis would have been handy too...

Have seen Thredbo slide to Skiers Right of Cruiser before, on high traverse to Gunbarrel. 11/08. Same aspect and elevation as DHG so BC would have same risk of sliding. Every slope can slide, don
t write any off (particularly with wind loading on top of ice sheets)

Hi all.Is Dead Horse Gap easy enough to navigate from Karels? I understand you head across the top of the bowl, staying high as possible then head left of the range/ridgeline, again staying high but on the left? When the cascades carpark comes into view youre pretty much home yeah? Also, is leatherbarrel creek on the way?Is it worth dropping down into there for a play and hiking out or is it on the other side of the range?
    Cheers in advance.

Yes easy to find in good visibility.
No leatherbarrel is the other way and you need to be competent as its a tempation to ski down and not enjoy the long climb out. Also avoid descending rock couloirs they wont have cover.

You need waaaay more cover than is presently the case to make it even slightly enjoyable.

I like to stay high longer, drop a line into Bogong, before a short boot climb back onto the Ski School ridge.

Dont drop over the other side of the ridge, it takes forever to get back up or around.

Its usual to arrange a car at the Cascades carpark. If you are going to ski back to the resort, Id just poke around Ramshead.

There is no where near enough snow a present. The other thing is that you do get off the ridge it is a very dense bush bash out. Have heard of people who got ‘suckered in to the sucker hole’ take three hours to get down to the track.

Unless it's a big year like last. Lines south of Sat peak were sweet, with a little skin back thru the GC.

Was up there on Saturday. No good. Very icy up top and very poor cover. Still a fun hike tho.

The little knoll middle ground above the two kids in blue leaning rightis the crux, can be challenging on a board for newbies getting around it. It's also where the suckering begins.

Iwas just thinking how nice that looked and wondering why no one was in there scoring freshies.
So stay away from that area? How far into the run is this?

good to know telecrag, I might hit you up if that's the case. I'm keen to get out there and will be around next Sunday, so if you fancy some company on a little side country detour you can let me know if a flick you a PM closer to next week.

Sounds good, Whippet may be interested also. I think we have some friends skiing Thredbo that day also though. Might be able to organise a vehicle drop, and do a way out wide, end at DHG proper run.

    Thread revival.

I am going to head to DHG next Sunday 23 August to play with my new gear. I won't be venturing far as I just want to get a feel for the new gear and have a look around there to start with. If anyone is interested hit me up or just turn up. I plan to step off around 8 but will be up in the carpark around 7 ish - you won't miss the big blue van.

Obviously I will be weather dependant and if it is filth then I am out.

I've never really stopped at DHG (except to turn the bike around in summer) where do you go to play around? I'm keen to find some not too far to venture places to play on my gear.

I am not 100% sure hence why I will be not venturing too far.

From the car park it should be easy to identify the path that others have used to go up and I will skin up and down around there.

There will be a tram track from the top carpark up to above the treeline. You cant really go wrong. Ive had some awesome skis there when its been howling at the resort, in the trees. One time Muzz tried to gap the road when we came back down, it had snowed 15cents while we were out.
