Want to come down for the Demo Day weekend. Does anyone have any ideas of which July weekend?

It's usually around the 20th-25th, but with school holidays early this year, not sure if they will bring it forward?

Doing something sensible like that might take the conversation and speculation out of this thread :D

I'd be surprised. Demo day last year was abandoned "due to covid". If that meant due to the risk of infection very little has changed or is likely to change by July this season. The resort will be doing everything possible to reduce risk so they can stay open and keep making money.
Also, in conversations with shops last year apparently a lot of new skis never arrived (also "due to covid"). Whether the supply issues are sorted and some of the newer funkier models make it out here remains to be seen. I have no interest in demoing the same skis I tried a couple of years ago.

Demos are organised by SIA, just logged on to the website and nothing has been announced yet for 2021.

But yes they are usually held around that 20-25 July timeframe in NSW, so I’d tentatively guess weekend of the 24th-15th. When there’s an announcement I’ll post it.

Because the tune of the ski has a great impact on performance than the difference between equivalent models.

Probably even more so. There are not many “bad” skis out there now. There are a lot more bad tunes;) So if you ski 4 skis, and one skis like a dog, it is more likely to be a bad tune than an inherently bad ski.

Demo bindings can really affect the way a ski performs as well

Add to that the fact that the average person skis up to a demo tent on skis that are most probably a bit clapped out and not tuned well, what they will mainly be feeling is the snappiness of a near brand new ski with an excellent tune.

No "bad" skis but some are less than optimal for conditions. Try taking a wider QST like the 99 down Australian hardpack on an icy morning - I don't care how well it's tuned its still going to feel horrible compared to a Volkl Mantra or the Kastle mx 99 even if they are blunt. Modern demo bindings aren't too bad either - the difference between the attack and attack demo is so minimal it wont affect your ride.

    Demos are fantastic.

All the ski experts telling you what's what with ski construction and why one ski is better than the other. What characteristics you should be looking for in a ski. Espousing the virtue of Titanium in a ski and that's just the punters testing the skis.;)

As one of the dumb binding jockeys at a demo day, it is always refreshing to meet some the elite and to be reminded of the good 'ol days of slavery. You do meet some super nice people doings demos and it's great to be able to talk skis and help them have a fun couple of runs on your product. On the whole I love 'em, but sometimes you meet some real f'wits. The worst or best depending on how you take it, was a well known TV chef, who espouses a particular diet. What a knob.

But I digress, here are the folks that you meet.
    • "The clean bum" -Young baggy pantsed "ski bums", living off daddy's money who trash your skis after one run.
    • "The normal person"- Super keen skiers who want to learn and understand more about a ski (I like these people)
    • "The demo king" - Habitual demoers. Attends every demo. Knows everything, about every ski on the market. Hasn't bought a new ski in 20 years but tells you he is buying this year for sure. (Give me strength lord)
    • "The Sharman" - Fonts of all ski knowledge (generally, overweight and driving a 10 year old intermediate ski)
    • "The Ligetys" - Folks who can ski, really well and are doing their due diligence.
    • "The Kardashians" - Party boys and girls of all ages in expensive ski gear who don't let the skiing get in the way of the partying.
    • "The Beans" - The clueless looking for advice and telling you the last ski they tried turned in the wrong direction by itself. Gotta love 'em.
    • "The deal makers" - Looking to leverage their deep 2 minute relationship with you to buy a pair of brand new demo skis for 80% off RRP. Their closing argument is, "C'mon mate, I know how much you pay for 'em"
    • "The freebies" - Friends, ski patrol, instructors hitting you up to try different skis. They haven't registered or paid for the demo day privileges. I'm cool with that, they put in the hard yards.
    • "The cougar bunny" - Generally mis-informed. A friend told them that ski reps make a lot of money. bahaha.
    • "The Bond" - James Bond, you can guess the rest. Not to be confused with "The Tomba".
    • "The indecisive" - Narrowed it down to two skis, so tries both several times and still can't make a decision. Been there all day and is still asking to try it one more time as we're packing up.
    • "The darkness" - No ski on the planet and definitely none at the demo day felt right.
    • "The opal miner" - Looking for whatever ski isn't at the demo day. Gotta be small production ski not many have heard of. For cred, you know.
    • "The lonely, loveless" - Telemark skiers. Also known as "The Dreamers". Always asking if we have any skis set up with demo tele bindings. Out of sheer pity I almost did one year. But common sense prevailed.

at the risk of falling into one of your categories above*, I think I read somewhere that there really isn’t ‘titanium’ in most skis?

*I freely admit to having zero knowledge or expertise on this subject

I was the demo king but over time as I've bought more skis I've drifted towards the darkness.

I just want a playful ski that rails on hardpack, surfs through powder and can be thrown around through tight spaces. Is that too much to ask???

Yes I did ponder that at the time, then just followed through.

Titanium is expensive, just shy of the gold price and it's difficult to work with. So I'm confident to stick to my claim. Hell it's hard enough getting folks to pay for prepreg carbon fibre.:)LOL

10g of gold leaf (184cm2) is $14 from this amazon seller. You could put two 5mm stringers of gold leaf in your lay up, advertise these stringers as having an amazing effect. I doubt you'd be lying much more than any of the other marketing gimmicks designed to move skis off the shelf.

From a customer's perspective there is a range of ways the vendors operate which can influence your opinion of the ski. From the super cool "no worries brother, take em anywhere and ski them like you stole them" to the guy who looks at you the same way that a corner shop owner eyes off a group of teenagers entering his store, and then proceeds to examine the base of the skis before and after the demo with the precision of a high end diamond merchant.

As you're probably aware. I do the pre ski chat. "You damage them you own them" then I throw in "you know how much these skis cost". Then I tell them, it usually scares them straight.

If the Ti is painted in white on the top sheet, then they could be correct. Titanium Dioxide is a common white paint pigment.

You forgot ”The Free Rental” - pisses off with the ski for the whole day and feigns temporary deafness when you say you told them ‘just a couple of runs mate’. Will never purchase.

Yes I did. Good catch @CarveMan . I had that one, which is one of the more obvious but then while thinking of the others, it dropped out of my tiny brain. Thanks for that.

The Free Rental was what said celebrity chef tried but he stepped it up by taking them back to the lodge on the Saturday night after having them all day. He was gunning for the free weekend rental. Oh! and how indignant when had to return early Sunday morning to the demo tent.

Perisher normally present it as a "bonus" for epic pass holders ie free. Thredbo used to charge a nominal fee of $20-$30 for the weekend, presumably to cover insurance.
