Is it the one who's falling into snow head first over there next to the big rock?

More stuff on the new works at Thredbo in Richard's Report..

http://www.ciau.com.au/snow/rrr.asp

I didn't realise they were building a covered magic carpet; as Richard says:

"I'm told that the new High Noon bypass will be completed in time for winter and that a "covered" 3rd snow runner (magic carpet) will cross the creek above Friday Flat and provide a long and gentle run for skiers and boarders back along the widened Summer Road (see earlier report) and down the last section of High Noon that is now being bypassed for those actually skiing High Noon."

Thredbo FB posted this.

New toys! I wonder how many of these they will get in total this year.

Would that baby be for the new snowrunner area located to the right hand side of Friday Flat? I would assume it would require a decent amount of snowmaking.

I think that will be the place. Haven't seen/heard of any updates on snowmaking for that area yet.

True, especially near the end of season. It was all ice even at the top of FF, not snow.

The beginner bowl looked like this on 25 Aug last year.

Take a look at what's been happening over the warmer months here at Thredbo Resort. Friday Flat is now 30% bigger with a new designated Beginner Bowl and a brand new surface lift - Sunkid Wonder Carpet. Check out the brand new beginner run Giddy Up (formerly the lower slope of High Noon) and the new track for the bottom of High Noon that leads you directly to Gunbarrel Express Chairlift. Automated snowmaking has also been installed across Friday Flat and Eagle Way. WINTER IS COMING...

Wish it had been like this last year when I brought my timid Snow Virgin buddies - might have had a higher success rate with them.

Good work getting it done for this year Thredbo!

Should have taken them to Perisher.

Anyways. They are going to have to use a shed load of snowmaking to get that new beginner bowl happening. At least the grass is nice and soft.
For those that don't appreciate where it is. On the way out of Thredbo, youve just past the last roundabout. Its immediately on your left.

Re the "new" high noon.I do see trouble. Thats still a fairly fast part of the run where it narrows. People will be hauling to get up that slope.

We did go over to Perisher Donza.
The weather was pretty against us, but they DID enjoy the tubes!

Yes I expect that they will be having to "make hay when the sun shines" (or snow when the conditions are right) and get as much of a base as possible to see them through the sunny and rainy days. From the reports it seems they have increased the snowmaking all over FF...that's gotta help.

As for the High Noon new bit - we'll just have to give it a try and report back. I'll be there on opening weekend. If it's open I'll have a crack.

Why can't they remove the trees in the middle of Friday Flat as well? That would give much more space, not just area under the tree itself, but area around it too.

Also according to the Expansion diagram, the new runout rejoin Friday Flat around the end of current Wombat World in such an angle that I think, unless there is a fence, beginners from the new run will find it terrifying at this junction.

The tree's provide a bit of a wind break and separate the area's Dos. Lots of newbies start at the tree's and come down from there.

I might be mistaken but I think the vast majority will have already turned toward the EDI lift, or stopped at the snowrunner...so no problem.

From Richard's report, the beginning of Snowrunner #2 is just there behind the cars, right at the joint. If a rider want to return to S#2 s/he needs to go somewhere around the cars which, from my memory, is the last part of Wombat World jump. Unless they remove this jump beginners will have to share the run with riders from HN a bit before they can turn left.

00073907.jpg

Why do they only fence that much space? Why not the whole area?

True. But with the removal of the lower old snowrunner (and relocation to the beginner bowl) there should be more room there, it should be opened up somewhat. The majority of High Noon riders stay right and slide into the skiers left loading of Gunbarrel. Usually they only swing left and end up in the ski school meeting area if they are taking a break, getting a drink, visiting the facilities
wink.gif
. The FF sliders will be much more likely to stick to the left - especially as there are fast people coming down the right hand side, and cut back across the FF area to the EDI lift. The snowrunner users will likely ski to the inside of the snowrunner, and repeat, they will not be in the flow of the FF new run users, or the HN users. Oh, and those tree's? They'll offer the protection from uphill skiers that the snowrunner users will need.

Why do they only fence that much space? Why not the whole area?

00073910.jpg

Those fences are to catch sliders before they end up on the road.
The gap in the fence is where it goes uphill - they wont be slipping out that way

Alright, let's wait and see how it goes. We'll find out soon enough.

As for the fence, I just feel that the last bit gets in the way of my eyes, like it squeezes the space somewhat. Had it been erected in straight line to the end, it will feel much more open.

I should have been clearer. I didn't mean the far end of the fence. I just meant the last two sections at the near end.

I thought if these two sections went straight to the left, I'd feel better.

Thredbo has announced that the new covered snowrunner will be named 'The Borrow' and the new beginner run will be called 'Giddy-Up'.

I can understand the borrow but how the hell did they come up with giddy-up. The new run has the lowest average grade of any run accessed from the EDI chair. There is no way to go fast.

I think you'll find its the Burrow (not the Borrow) easty.

And tele-whippets quip gave me a mental image of people urging their boards and ski's on, having to give them a little encouraging nudge or thrust to get going. Kinda like encouraging a stubborn horse

Why? A fall line issue, too tight a bend, or just that you think people will continue on the same path they've skied for years - like a homing pidgeon?
wink.gif

I'd be more concerned about the nutters who see it as a terrain feature and work out a way to jump over it onto Friday Flat

This is what was supposed to be built.

From:

Thredbo has released their application for the alteration/extension to the High Noon Run Out/Friday Flat area.
Map of the alterations - Map of Alerations
Link to the DoP Page - Friday Flat Extension

In short, they are cutting a path to the west of the current path, which is 18m, then narrows to 12m before having a bridge over the river, before cutting back into the original run.
- Snowrunner #1 is being moved into the 'bowl' that is located on the Jindabyne side of Friday Flat, effectively the snowplay area.
- A new Snowrunner (Includes roof!) is being built going from the Top of Easy Does it towards the old exit run, so that the beginners can access the area.

it just makes a quick part narrower..people will be hauling to get to the new run. I see some carnage.

Why can't they cut the exit a little further down, say where the lable "Rock Groyn" is? That way it will really separate people from the new FF run and people from HN will go straight down to Gunbarrel without turning and joining back to the end of FF.
