We are heading back to stay in the area for the Oct long w/e in just over 2 weeks. Ostensibly to ski (Perisher) but depending on conditions we may do some hiking.

The Dead Horse Gap walk is 'open' technically from that weekend but is it do-able / advisable? Would we get lost?

There'll be a ton of snow still about, maybe leave it till Easter or Christmas (for walking). FWIW, DHG sits around 1,500m, so the walk is above this.

It might be almost skiable, maybe hike the last 100m or so, I have done it like that, and we saw a snake!

Not if you take a map, compass or GPS ( no phone reception) and leave the blindfold behind.
It may not be a walk.
It should be fun but sometimes the best made plans of mice and men go awry!
