Berghain wasn't there when I lived in Berlin. The club scene is Berlin is phenomenal, what ever you want to do, there is a club for you which is pumping any night of the week, till all hours.

The video are right about the fun police from a legal perspective, I'm not convinced from a cultural perspective. It is really poor form in Berlin to get drunk unless its a private party, or an event or festival where being drunk is acceptable. Stay out all night, but don't get off your face if you don't want to insult everyone. I'm not sure the expectation for men to piss sitting down is particularly free. Whilst I didn't have a restrictive rental agreement I was stunned at the options which exist in the pro forma rental agreement, laundry schedules, prohibitions on hanging out your laundry on a sunday, ect. Never J-Walk infront of a German mother and child, the ear bashing the mum will give you is phenomenal.

Berlin is my favourite city to visit in the world, soooo much to do (indoors, the weather is to shit for many outdoor options), so many events, so much culture and most of it on the bleeding edge. But it exists within a culture which paradoxically demands conformity in so many contexts. Actually I take that back. There is nothing pardoxical about Berlins cultural production and "freedom", it is 'alles in ordnung". There is a particular time and place to let loose, do it there, but don't dare do it anywhere else, or at a different time.

Good post. Good points. Yep - in a land of strict law, there's also room for total freedom. Just don't disobey the Ampelmann. Or do. I try to do the right thing when kids are around although I don't think it does them any favours to teach them to blindly trust a light instead of using their eyes and brains.

Winter is cold and dismal but we've had wall to wall sunshine for the last 4 months. Its all about adapting one's lifestyle to take advantage of the positives. Being a wintersports person helps. Punctuate the cold months with good stuff. More London style pubs would be welcome for winter weekends. Thats happening though, as the city becomes more gentrified.

You're right; there are probably clubs open every night of the week. The thing is, I'm an old bastard now and nights are for sleeping. Day clubbing; it just makes so much sense. Saturday nights are actually the worst time to go to Berghain. Sunday arvo/evening is when the magic happens. There are still at least 500 people in there at say 11am on a Sunday morning though. I've gone after brekky a few times

LOL yes, some pretty complicated ones in that lot. But those aside, generally they are not quite as bad as they look at first glance. You just have to break it up into the separate components to work it out. They just like concatenating multiple words into one.

Never mind the result of the Second World War.....on a more serious nature Team Bears suffered failure of their driving light bar!!

After tracing the wiring ,checking the battery connections, fuses, wire couplings and on/off switch we could not work out why the system had catastrophic failure!

    Those bloody Germans!
Problem was found in the Deutsche Plug!
Wires had somehow come out of that silly gadget!

A lot of those phrases are essentially sentences with no spaces between the words. Even myself, born in Germany of German parents, and I can speak fluently - (aber nicht Hoch Deutsch) - I do have to PSML at many of those examples. I watch the German news on SBS sometimes and do really struggle.

Hoch deutch is pomp. The average German does not use most of those terms because they simply stagnate a functional streamlined conversation.

    For you Germany/Austria gurus.
Advice needed for when we are in Kaltenbach over Christmas. Apparently Christmas eve is when Austrian families have their main Christmas celebration. We have the option to book dinner at a recommended restaurant in a nearby town (about 10 minutes drive). We won't have a car. Is it likely normal taxi services will be available?

Correct regarding main celebration on Christmas Eve.
There are plenty of taxi operators in the Zillertal (easily confirmed with a quick google), though I didn't use any myself. I used the train, but it looks like that only goes to 8pm. This one for example does say 24hrs/day, 365 days/year and has an email address.

For those interested in some Deutsch flavoured TV, try watching Deutschland 83 and the recently released sequel Deutschland 86. German TV production quality hasn't traditionally been much chop but in the last few years things have improved out of sight. US quality productions.

Deutschland 86 is fascinating. Set in Cape Town, it looks at the desparation of the bankrupt East German socialist state and the rank hypocrisy of them employing ultra capitalist strategies (selling blood to the west, allowing the west to dump their garbage for cash, selling weapons to the ANC in violation of international sanctions etc) to shore up the finances.

My wife grew up in East Germany and her family's history could script many movies, but even she was amazed at some of the stuff we learned while watching this series.

The 10 part series actually has an accompanying non fiction documentary "Comrades and cash".

We're having some of the extended family over for a pre X-mas lunch on Saturday and I'm under strict instructions from the wife, to zip it and not even think of mentioning Deutschland 86 to them! One of the aunts was married to a very senior East German diplomat during the 70's and 80's and lived with him in NYC. I'm dying to probe on the hypocrisy of living it up in the capitalism capital of the world while 99% of East Germans weren't allowed to travel anywhere outside the Eastern Bloc.......

embassy staff were highly privileged just having the job because international travel was so prestigious
they had to have exemplary political records to qualify
their capacity to live it up would have been limited due to the scrutiny applied to their activities

Here is one of my experiences with East Germany. 30 years ago I was at a conference in Bulgaria. My work colleague fancied a East German lady who was also attending. He asked her to go out and have a drink. Nope was the reply. Why? Well at the end of the trip all the East Germans had to write a report on what went on. Now IF one of her colleagues saw her with a western dude they would have to dob her in. Why? Because they would not know if she and the "western business man" were both Stasi agents and her tryst with a "westerner" was just to test the others loyalty to the party. So best to put that in their reports and dob her in just to be sure! Scary hey. And what a way to live. After the wall came down people accessed their own Stasi files and found out their husbands, brothers, mothers etc were the ones robbing them into the authorities for bad party behaviour which they got gaol time.

Almost every family has similar stories. Makes our Aussie childhood seem positively dull. Anyway, its Weihnachten time here, so here are a few updates for the thread.

Best laugh for ages .Loved piolet 's 2016 thread about the words in different languages from page 1 and the irony in the burning flesh was it loved or loathed ?
All races /cultures are crazy when seen from a different perspective, have just been to Morocco.
Being Jewish I have always had a love /hate feeling for the Germans.
Learned German somewhat , like their efficiency , being straightforward, big ideas and intellect = nudity, solar power, recycling .
Dislike their respect for authority .
Actually they have some intellectual sense of humour especially about themselves.

@ Berghain yesterday, partied with an African American family from New Jersey. The 25yo son works in Berlin. His sister, mum, aunt, uncle and grandmother surprised him with a visit for his birthday. So he took them to Berghain for Mothers Day. The 78yo grey haired matriarch, dressed like she was going to an actual church, barely left the dance floor. And didn't look even the slightest bit out of place. Damn, I love this city.

They picked a good week for it too. I mean Berghain never disappoints and is never for the faint of heart, but it was off the charts yesterday. So good.

Can't remember if I've posted this before. It was Fathers Day (Vaterstag) yesterday in Germany. They do it differently here. Instead of spending the day with the family, its a day when men go out together and get wasted. You see groups of them all over the place, always with a "Bollerwagen" (beer wagon) which is some type of wheeled cart with beers and sometimes a bit of food.
