It will last for the life of the ski. You can count on that.

There has been some natural snow. But yeah, pretty grim.

I just checked some numbers, by some measures, it is certainly one of the worst we've had in recent times. I'm not too worried, I've got too much other shit on at the moment to afford the distraction of snow. When I get a chance to get after it, I know where to go to avoid disappointment ;)

Good to hear. Picked up two pairs for freshly Phantomed skis last week. Get to use them from Saturday. Mix of inbounds and main range schlepping.....

Would any of you get this base treatment done at a place not associated with a ski shop and not near the ski fields.
Would you be willing to snd your skis to get it done or would you have to drop them off.
With this season half gone, would you consider getting it done off season ready for the next

End of July season half over.
But more to do with not getting the treatment done for this season ends and getting it done off season ready for next season

bah, the season doesn't really begin till August :)

I'm planning on getting Phantom applied sometime in the next few weeks, if I can get the timing to work out. I need to give Rhythm a call. If I can get it done while I wait, then all good, otherwise I'll drop them off on the way home on one day trip, and pick them up a few days later on my way down for another trip.

I forgot to answer the other part of your question.
I wouldn't send my skis away, it would have to be somewhere I can drop them off and either wait, or pick them up a few days later. Since the only place to do it relatively locally is on the way to the snow, it's easier to do during the season rather than out of the season - even though they are more likely to have time to work on them out of season.

Cannot be done while you wait as has to cure in UV box for a while. Realistically you need to allow that you will be without skis at best for 24 hours.

"While I wait" could be up to an hour or so. Can go and grab something to eat etc or shop.
IIRC from earlier in the thread (without looking back) curing is about 20 minutes in the box.

?? The time in the UV box is 20 min. When needed Part A and Part B, that's about an hour total for the process. Having to wait 24 hours would be a function of a shop staff being too busy with other tasks, not the Phantom treatment process. My understanding is that now there is a single part version of Phantom being used by shops with the Cure Station in the U.S.

The most fun time to have Phantom bases is during late season when higher temps can lead to sticky snow. I know several people who went ahead to get their skis treated with only a couple weeks left in their ski season for that reason. One shop in the U.S. northeast included Phantom treatments in their late season 50% off sale. So that was a factor for a few people.

Hence my questions about out of season. If a few people rock up and want to wait, someone will be waiting a fair while

I couldn't see any chance of under an hour
it is 20 mins cure, 15mins application, oven has to get up to temp, clean residue, prepare before starting etc etc

So if it was available but not on the way to snow, would you travel to get it done off season and if so how far before you would not be interested.

Most of what I know about using a Cure Station is from the video done by Ski Essentials (Vermont, USA) when a tech from DPS was doing training for their ski shop staff. The work starts around the 7-min mark. He puts it in the Cure Station around the 15-min mark and talks about what happens when the Start button is pushed.

    http://www.skiessentials.com/Chairlift-Chat/DPS-Phantom-2-Wax-System-Explanation

Optimal application starts with a stone grind, not just cleaning off old wax. That's generally the service being offered by U.S. shops doing Phantom treatments using the Cure Station from what I hear.

I had mine done at Snowmass in late February. Had a base, Tune and phantom done overnight- dropped off one evening, ready the next morning. A
Phantom alone they preferred 90 minutes for the job but needs overnight they said for stabilisation of the base.
And it works really really well- skied in early spring conditions with good groomer prep in the morning and occasional slush puddles in the arvo. Skated over stuff that would normally hang me up. Would recommend.

Out of interest, I spoke with rhythm Cooma last week. They said to me it was definitely not possible currently to do it while you wait, or give a guaranteed turnaround time, as they are very busy with general shop work. They estimated 2-3 days.

A technical question, maybe for @DPS Driver or anyone else.

Does running without the wax affect the long term wear / abrasion of the base? I know that waxing is primarily a lubricant. However, I would think putting a thin layer on top of the base would also have some protective function and reduce base wear? The ski base has a finite thickness, and eventually is worn away either by skiing and/or base grinds.

I guess the treatment has not been around long enough for this to be seen in the real world. However, you would assume wear and abrasion simulation would have been performed in development?

My take is because you are changing the molcular structure of the base particles they bond together tighter and become harder.
    A bit like toughening glass

Phantom actually does as Hatto suggested. It toughens the base, which actually increases the life of the ski.

All skis run without wax because it wears off, conditions pending, within two days or so. It takes a lot of skiing to wear your bases out, snows abrasive powers aren’t that strong. It’s abrasive for sure and man made snow is more abrasive than natural snow but skis are made to handle this. Most base material Is lost through base grinding. Grind a base prepped with Phantom and you’ll actually uncover the next layer of Phantom and away you go again.

Noticed a definite difference between my phantom mk 2 skis and those with original phantom. Definitely quicker gliding.

im interested to know if you think the application could be the cause, if you think maybe they weren't cured properly, or if you think the new formula's end glide result is simply a better result.

Hard to be certain, but both sets were applied in the same manner (by me) and were both given over time in the Sydney sun to cure, so I’d err toward the formula being the difference.

It wouldn't make much difference. Your weight and the friction of the base on the snow melts a film of water. When you're skiing on snow its more accurate to say you're skiing on water. Phantom, or wax make your bases more hydrophobic so the surface tension of the thin film of water is less able to hang onto your skis.
