Go the scenic route and avoid the SH1 "Rakaia and Ashburton" - way too much traffic for a crappy single lane highway. The inland scenic route will miss Methven unless you take a little detour but your following the mountains all the way down and will hardly pass another vehicle.

Thankyou, that sounds like good advice.

Are we likely to strike any ice risk sections? We expect to arrive Tekapo about 1 hour after sunset.

Yep, Just keep an eye on the temperature if the car has it and take a bit of extra care if drops below zero, but should be plenty of grit on the roads

Should be ok driving late evening. Be mindful on the Geraldine to Fairlie section as some bits of the road were damaged by recent flooding and sections do ice up but usually worse early mornings. Any hazards are well sign posted.

Thanks again, the direct route from Darfield was a good suggestion and a nice drive with not much traffic.
