I had a look and it seems like you can only get yearly passes?

Last year you could buy a permit from the Thredbo Info Centre if you arrived when NPWS road booth was closed when you drove through.
Buy it early and put it on your windscreen before the permit rangers do their morning patrol.
    Ring NPWS and enquire

worth noting the parking guys only give you a payment notice, not a fine, so if you don't get it before you park there is no need to panic.

I prefer to panic, can I wake someone up at midnight so I don't have to worry?

Actually last year was the first time I got a notice. I had a season pass, but couldnt get the old one off, so was leaving it on the dash, and forgot a few times. If GT is doing the rounds, he knows my van, so it must of been a newbie. I could almost get away without buying one! But looking at the big picture, someone has to pay for those PHD grads sitting in the booth, waiting for a real job in KNP!

I normally put a note on my dashboard saying "Hi Mr Ranger. We arrived after the people at the gate went home last night. We're going to get a permit in the morning so please don't write us a ticket!". I've never had a problem.

Parks fees aside, be REALLY slow and careful of wildlife on the alpine way at night. Kangaroo roulette! Not to mention the wombats and deer and other assorted animals. I seem to have at least one close call every time I drive into Thredbo at night.

I really dread it actually these days and will be looking to stay in cooma/jindy on the drive down more this year.

    ^^^ this ^^^

Roos, wallabies, wombats, emus, deer and if you're really unlucky even a horse or two. None of which you want to hit. You only need to look at the roadsides on a morning trip up the mountain to realise how nasty it can be.

A few years ago it was rated as one of the two worst roads in the state for animal-related accidents by the NRMA.

I should add that I do let the idiots past, and those with amazing lights. Always amazes me how many people will try and do 80 at night, with snow falling, and some on the road.

    Double this!!!
Had a colleague write off his car last season (hit a cow!??) and whilst not on the same road- we had to jam on the breaks on a 100km/h freeway coming into Canberra on the way home Monday night to miss a big roo. We missed it, but it jumped into the car in the lane to the right of us, left a massive dent and hopped off looking dazed. Not sure it would have held up too well after that, but fortunately no one (besides the roo) was injured this time.

And I'm forever jealous driving in in my completely neked and unprotected hire car! LOL
Surely there is a market in Canberra for a tricked out Ski Specific hire car - roof box and roo bar at minimum.

Trouble is if you put a roo bar on it, people will feel invincible. Better to feel naked and drive at 70 around dusk than have a roo bar and drive at 110.

Ditto. When I was doing a season at Thredbo, a friend borrowed my car and hit a wild brumby.

The current score is Volvo 5 Kangaroos 0.5 (we had to do some repairs) And my mogul skier has been having a few lessons in how to deal with the injured wildlife left still kicking, just, when other cars hit them and the drivers keep going.

The other day he stopped to remove on from the road and it was still alive. He rang us to find out what to do. Whilst on the phone some guy pulled up, pulled a wooden guide pole out from the side of the road, whacked it on the head, put the guide pole back in the hole, checked my mogul skier was okay and then left. A bit surreal!

We live in Canberra and have been driving up through the mountains for years and I don't think I can remember seeing as much road kill as we have seen this year.

Saw a guy in BMW X5 hit a deer yesterday morning just up from jindy. He was in "my poor car mode" as he looked at the dent and stroked the panel. Meanwhile crazy buck was running along the road still with a nice set of horns.

There are roos about on the Monaro but i haven't sen any activity on the road from Canberra - Dubbo all season. Conditions are too good off the road for them to be near the road.

Bambi was still running around and looking healthy. Thinking he must have just hit the car with his horns only.

Yeah my mogul skier said there is a lot around this year. But less foxes.

He picked my up from Canberra airport today. One new roadkill on the way back which is a bit unusual for daytime. A couple of very sad looking cars on the way as well.

I agree, the roads around Canberra and from Canberra to Thredbo seem to have more carcasses beside them this year. Lanyon Drive between Jerrabomberra and Hume had three fresh road kills just this morning. It was quite horrifying, the road was blood stained for nearly 100 metres. The Monaro seems to have a lot more road kills, particularly around Royalla.

Lake George is looking a bit parched (or was a few weeks ago). If that is symptomatic of the region then no wonder the wildlife is on the roads looking for whatever grass it can get.

^ I haven't seen Lake George close to full since the 80's. It pretty much never has any water in it these days, and what it does have is over towards the south east.

As for Kangaroos there was plenty around wednesday morning, I went through the last roundabout near Calwell at about 6am and a large one jumped across the road about 100m up the from me. I then saw 3 fresh kills (One had its victim (a ute) pulled over to the side of the road with bits of its bumper all over the place. All this before I got to Williamsdale

Another car was of the road but that one had obviously been there since at least the day before.

It does get lots of water in it at times but it does not stay atm. In the 80s it seemed like there was always water in it. A few years ago I heard an ABC thing about it where they were talking about when it had so much permanent water that they had paddle boats on it and there was a fishing industry there.

+1 for taking it easy with wildlife.

Was heading from Banjos to Schuss Bar one night, he just had "bomb insurance". We encountered a wombat on the way up. I let him overindulge after our arrival and I drove the car down. It was only just drive able, there was damage to steering and suspension components.

When I was a kid, quite a few decades ago, the water came up to the road. There was a sailing club that had regular races.

I can remember seeing it both full and empty in the 80's. I remember my father telling me about a sailing club that never really succeeded because of the unreliable water levels. I suspect its always been that way.

Soooo much road kill on my drive down from Syd and back last Wed/this Mon. A friend wrote his car off on a roo just near Bredbo on Sun night. I'm wondering though- if it just appears that there is more road kill than usual because it is not getting cleared at all? There's a legs up wombat on a corner coming into Jindy after the Mobile/Snowy Valley Resort that has been there since around opening weekend, possibly earlier. He hasn't moved (checking every weekend for 2 months!!!) and doesn't appear to be going anywhere fast due to the cold temps.
