    G'day guys,

Can anyone enlighten me as to the quickest way to get to Falls Creek from Eastern Victoria (Traralgon area), given the Bogong-High Plains Road is closed for winter? Does anyone have any experience?

    Options:

    1. Usual way through Melbourne and via the Hume Fwy? (Google Maps says 6hr44min, however given how bad traffic is at 6pm on a Friday night...)

    2.
Drive through Omeo and over Hotham? (Google Maps says 5hr43min)

I don't actually know, but I would be looking at cutting North from around Pakenham and heading up to Healesville, Yarck, Midland Hwy, and join the Hume at Benalla. Avoid Melbourne traffic and the uncertainty of crossing Hotham

I would go the Omeo highway. It's a bit of a pain going up then down Hotham then up and down the Tawonga gap but it beats going near the city.

You don't actually have to go anywhere near the city. Closest you'd get is Eastlink.

If weather is good I'd go up and over Hotham. If weather is poor the time savings could disappear pretty quickly.

Basically, if there is a decent chance the road will close over Hotham then go via the outskirts of Melbourne.

ohhh whens that helicopter run from Hotham to Falls Creek???....if you had money to burn then park Hotham Village and heli to falls Ck subject to weather/flight time tables.....not sure if helicopter goes from village or from Hotham Airport....probably operating day light only.... its a wonder nobody is doing a little illegal skiddoing at night...must be some illegal runners up that way....suppose you could park at Trapyard Gap Gate and skidoo the rest(maybe 1/2 hour illegal operation???o_Oo_Oo_O

Charter the heli from DP airport. Free parking would help offset the cost.

Holiday could get a bit longer if they can't fly you back out from Falls.

A 'scenic' route to go is via Omeo but go north on the Omeo Hwy past the blue duck hotel and via Mitta Mitta, cross over to Dederang and onto the Kiewa valley highway and onto Mt Beauty/Falls. Have done it once from DP when Hotham road closed, was a memorable trip.

I think that the Omeo Hwy can be closed between Omeo & Mitta if there is recent heavy snow. Nice scenic route but not exactly a quick one

Quicker to Perisher... Orbost > Cann River > Bombala > Jindabyne... and a much more enjoyable drive.

This is probably not very helpful.

tonight and tomorrow could cause chaos around Mt Wills with fallen trees....if u have family on board then get details off internet of accomodation in Glen Valley/Glen Wills and Blue Duck just in case you get stuck or need to return.....Barry Way thro Snowy River is closed at moment I hear...

next 2 days is problematic every where....avoid travel if possible...and other highway from Benambra towards Corryong requires 4x4 cos of muddy section...

do pack a chainsaw if u have one......

I actually live in the north-west so no issues for me getting there, I asked to help out some others in our group who live over East.

They ended up coming up via Hotham however went home via Healesville which they said ended up being quicker!

    Thanks again everyone!

I think that is a good decision as you aren't that far east.

Don't go over Hotham unless you really want to in those circumstances.

Easiest is via East link then make way to Hume, rest speaks for itself....

Alternative is over the black spur, but quite frankly, do the above

Yeah thanks, thought so. I'd really like to do the scenic drive via Hotham but not sure my cruddy old vehicle will make it. Gonna be a car full too... don't want to be stuck halfway there with my screaming brats

The weather should be ok this weekend so I wouldn't be too worried about snow causing problems, but it's still a mountain road, so prone to being slow and more dangerous than a freeway- and with kids in tow you face the extra car sickness worries. I'd limit the 'dad I'm feeling sick' as much as possible....

via Hotham is one of the scenic drives in the country. If you have the leisure, it's well worth it. Apart from times of a recent dump, it's no drama to drive.

From East Gippsland the Omeo Hway would certainly be the quickest. Turn off west just north of Mitta Mitta on Snowy Ck and Trappers Gap roads to Tawonga.
As curra notes, it can get snow as it climbs to 1400 m but there's a snow clearing depot I think. Check road conditions reports before you leave.

Mr Buller @Jellybeans1000 would suggest that Mt Bulla is the only option.
