Less than 2 months before wheels up, might as well get this thread going. This trip will be a months skiing in Hokkaido with a mate. Hopefully we’ll get some powder skiing in ;).

A quick trip into Woden this morning to pick up my International Driving Permit.

Since the end of our season I’ve been on a health kick. No alcohol, no bad women, getting up early and exercising before work and watching what I eat. In the last 6 weeks I’ve dropped 10 kilos :). 7 more weeks of being good. Japow here we come. :woohoo:

That was the main problem. They tried to take skiing days away so they had to go.

How much was that? I ordered mine on-line from the NRMA and got it posted for a hefty fee. My photo looks Iike a prison mug-shot.

Yep, $39 from the shopfront with a self supplied photo. I think they charged ~$10-15 for a photo.

Trigger pulled on a Subi XV for our transport. I liked the idea of AWD + snowtires + a little bit of extra clearance to get around + it's a car I've driven before

    1 month to go

I’ve been playing around with some leashes. Is this the best way to attach them to the boots ?

Nah. Leash clips can tangle when boots come together- and put unwanted force on toepiece.

    agreed.
have them outside and clipped to the back.
    or not at all.
bit sketchy having them windmill around if you have a decent stack.
    Ribbons ?
we made up something like this.

Deep pow yeah yeah. I'm now of the opinion its essential kit in Hokkaido if you down want to spend hours looking for a submarined ski that came off. But, don't use leashes on the resort, far too dangerous on hard pack. Also, those particular leashes are the BD telemark leash and not really meant for AT. Best leashes are longer and attachéd from behind or have more play in them. Not everyone likes them but if you lose a ski in deep pow you cannot walk out. Coiled yellow tape off several metres also works but the mechs are fiddly in real conditions in the BC so Im not a fan. Other option of course is not to come out of your bindings! I have quite a few solo skis in the shop looking for a partner because skiers didn't use leashes and one case last year where the skier had a real epic getting of the Furano Dake north ridge at Tokachi on one ski! Come and see us in the shop in Furano and well show some options.

Well, I just went and read your review! Good stuff there. I have some of the Tiles (they come with replaceable batteries now) but wouldn’t have thought that they would be waterproof. Experienced locals in Whistler earlier this year recommended the ribbons that float to the surface ....

yeah i didnt trust the tile to survive much of the elements or wear and tear. i mostly wanted to test how their bluetooth tech worked.
only 10-15 meter range was ok imo, just that it was so quiet was a concern for me. indoors its so loud that its almost painful to be near, but outdoors i bet theres no way you're gonna hear that with a helmet on and your jacket rustling while digging through the snow.

ive never lost a ski for more than 20 seconds after crashing in usa or canada the snow was either too heavy or not deep enough, so i had never even thought about it twice while there. i can think of a 45cm day at breckenridge where i lost a ski and you could still see the path it took before it stopped. (1 season canada, 5 in usa)
not sure if its just a unique hokkaido snow thing, but in japan every time they come off here they seem to magically disappear. either they go 2 meters deep, further than you would ever expect them to go, many times ive literally been standing on them and didnt know. or they go 20 meters downhill off at a weird angle just below the surface with no evidence how it got there and you're just looking at a pristine field of white (11 seasons japan).

and im not interested in dealing with 20 meter long ribbons ;P

@DidSurfNowSki just noticed a 5-7day Furano lift pass entitles you to a freebie day pass to Kamui or Tomamu. One to keep in mind :)

On a good day it rocks - and when I was there 2 years ago it was very underutilised.

8+ day pass at Furano (ie. 8 or more days before any freebie days) entitles you to a freebie pass at both Tomamu and Kamui.

I have some home made powder tails if you are interested. I think they are in a box in Jindy.

Leashes should generally be at the back and outside edge side

Eldest lost a ski inbounds at Rusutsu. An hour later a patroller located it for us. Mine and youngest skis had ski retrievers, eldest was renting so didn’t. Doh.

@DidSurfNowSki I have ski retrievers in a drawer somewhere you’re welcome to borrow them.

I have a couple of pairs of these Dynafit ski ribbons, cheap and have worked three times in the last 2 years in Myoko and Tangram. The ribbon has always floated and super bright so easy to find. Can be a little annoying putting in skis, but generally a 10 second excercise, I just shove the ribbon down into top of my ski boot under my pants. You just need a small hole in the binding to loop into. I have them attached to the heel of Marker touring binding.
