Driving into tomakomai was interesting. Large swathes of agricultural land then a massive heavy industrial / port area. I’ve never seen anything quite like it.

Some pictures of the local produce.

    Individually wrapped apples

Some sort of fish I think

    These are definitely fish

    And some shellfish

What's the deal with the sasa? That's like looking at a playboy magazine from the 80's.

Someone needs to borrow brushcutter in late november and tidy the place up a little.

I noticed that on my brothers Sahoro vids. Lots of Sasa. A tidy up surely wouldn’t be detrimental to the environment and reduce being “caught by snow snakes”.

Definitely would not be of any issue whatsoever, if cut it will reshoot in spring. It's very hard to kill and can grow 2m per year.

We're approaching the tail end of this trip. On the bucket list:-
    • A cat ski day
    • A guided BC day
    • A day out at Asahi-dake
    • Ski Tomamu again
    • See the snow festival at Sapporo and as this is Japan, the land of random things....
    • Ski Fu's snow area :)
Some of these may be combined, depends on how the cards fall.

Old, unmaintained slope by the looks?

Be very slow by hand with brush cutter or clearing saw over that size area.

Anyone here ever operate an industrial slasher or forestry mulcher on a 20% plus slope, which would be required to deal with sasa recolonising a disturbed area (cut ski run). Actually very tricky & very expensive.

It's just a sparse patch on the right. I've cleared sasa with a brushcutter and whilst it's not fun if your aim is to just hack it off at about 20cm height then you can make decent progress. 2 brushcutters (they have the "good" ones in Japan with circular saw blades on the end, not whimpy nylon cord) and you'd have that job done in a day.

Around Furano the city often clears the sasa back from the sides of the roads by about 20m to improve visibility and stop the sasa from completely enveloping the road. They tend to have 1 guy in front hitting it at knee height and another following behind taking it down the last 30cm, they get a lot done and it grows damn thick on the sides of the roads.

Whilst it's not sasa, I cleared this (approx 700m2) in a day, and I was being careful to cut it nice and even at ground level. It may not look so bad because the photo is taken from the roof but it was well over 1m high.

Hey @DidSurfNowSki I can recommend Otoe cat skiing run by NAC out of Furano. The cat operates across the valley from Kamui, and while not steep I have had three deep days there in the trees. Sam the head guide is a madman from Devon but he makes it real fun

Today was a brutal day. We got in the car and headed off to Tomamu. A few clicks down the road we did a U-turn and headed back so I could put on an extra layer. -12C and pretty windy.

Once at Tomamu I had to wear a special yellow armband over the 5 layers of clothes :D

The tree runs were pretty meh tbh mainly as the snow was very sticky.

Of course, this being Japan people were swimming in a huge wave pool just a short distance away.

    Outside it being -12...

Please report back guys (@DidSurfNowSki @Froff Life ) - there’s been a long standing plan for a girls 2020 trip centered around CAT skiing, I was thinking Shimamaki, but whatever is the best experience for the girls (@sara777 , @Ozgirl , @billykate )

I haven’t done Shimamaki which looks like magnificent terrain. The good thing about Otoe is you don’t play follow the leader. Often you get to spread out along the edge of the track and pick your own way down. Fresh tracks all the time. OTOH there were a couple of guys who expected big alpine terrain and were disappointed.

Great tr thanks. Quick question for the knowledgeable here, is there any issues with skinning up the old resort opposite Kamui where the cat skiing is? Apart from the fumes and punters? While I’m at it , what about the one north of suonkyo onsen called tengu snow cats I think.

Cold, windy and light snow falling at Shintoku this morning.

Today I'm off to ski 2 of the small ski hills around here if they open; Shintokuyama and Minami Furano.

Sideways snow in Hirafu. Blustery winds right down in the lower village. Looks like the mountain is entirely on windhold

@Donzah You were right when you predicted how much this would knock the mountain around. Tomorrow fines up but the avi risk will be high I expect. Yesterday was a white out so low at Hanazono I had to stop in the trees skier’s right of the bottom lift towork out what was snow and what was air.
