I might take a leaf out of @Astro66's book and hide in coffee shops all day if this wind keeps up ;)

Mountain Base 6.00am: -9°, 5cm new snow in the last 12 hrs, strong wind and snowdrift development. Moiwa 800m: -11.3, N18m/s, continued cornice and snowdrift development . Mikaeri Weather Station: -11°, 150cm snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m: snow depth 215cm. Hirafu Ridgeline: -15°, N15m/s. Mizuno no Sawa: -12.79°, 8cm new snow in last 24hrs, snow depth 160cm. WNW9.9m/s.(max21.1m/s 5.30am). Suttsu Weather Station: -3.8°, NNW21.5m/s, snow depth 47cm. Kutchan Weather Station: -6.9°, WNW9.9m/s, snow depth 162cm.

Blizzard conditions at mountain base. Above 800m there is major snowdrift and cornice development from the strong winds. Tests show delayed snow drift stabilisation and cornices are easily collapsing. On SE faces around 1000m there is a risk of cornice collapse triggering surface avalanches around 100cm depth. Predicted fracture layer is Jan 30 frost layer. Even if the wind drops and lifts are able to run, do not go into Osawa or Kozan no Sawa valley bottoms. Also on the surrounding mountains take care on leeward snowdrift slopes, even below the treeline.

Snow in trees is heavy, wind packed and a challenge. Be careful hitting a tree. Expect easily occuring avalanches in the steep gulleys in Moiwa Anbetsu area. Don’t follow tracks that you don’t know where they are going Most accidents happen during or directly after blizzards. Even if the weather comes good, stay out of the valley bottoms. Always be cautious.

We're staying at the Yorkshire Farm, a very nice BnB and highly recommend the dinners if you like your lamb :). The local ski hill opens in 13 min (hopefully)

I was once served lamb chops for breakfast at a small pension. I was the only guest and I think they thought they were doing something nice for me.

    It was hard going....

Hey @bluestick Tengu cats use the old Kitta Taisetsu Ski resort. We've been kicked off skinning there as they like to save the powder for their paying clients. Id be surprised if Otoe cats don't have sort of exclusive arrangement at the old Fukagawa ski resort where they operate but others here report seeing people skinning there. I'll let you in on one of our secrets. Kitami Pass and Chitokaniushi Dake. Really superb touring and skiing close to Kitta Taisetsu ski resort and in northern Daistesusan National Park.

Yep, its a wild one in Hirafu. I can't remember seeing the main street quite so iced up, particularly after they put in the heating under the pavement. Its still iced over and the road is ice and causing problems for busses getting up the hill. At one stage the entire street was at a standstill with bigger vehicles stuck and needing chains. It really is puking out there, once top lifts open could be amazing if the wind hasn't destroyed the pow. After the drought of powder before the last couple of days it just won't stop snowing ie typical Jan/Feb Niseko conditions.....

Thanks telenomore from the website it seems like tengu only operate on a few days if no privates. Being an independant twosome might make us less of an issue. We might drop in and say hi if in town.

Today’s skiing was at Minami Furano as Shintokuyama was closed.

Only 2 of the 3 lifts were running. As soon as the local race training was finished I managed a few bootlegs up behind the lift and skied boot deep pow. :)

    A very unexpectedly fun session.

Minami Furano rocks!. It's got a decent pitch for a small town ski-jo. The top lift hasn't run in years.

I love the hand painted trail map.
