    Hey y'all

Trying to gather some Intel for the above cities, haven't settled or locked in anything at this point but Budapest at the end will most likely be happening.

Looking for somewhere fun and easy with the kids, beach and water and a cool place (GoT; so hot right now) so figured we'd check out Dubrovnik.

Where's good to stay? (Both cites)
What's good to see? What's worth avoiding? (Keep in mind young kids...)

Or, where else might suit? Easy access to Budapest is a plus

    Ta muchly

Oh yeah, timeframe is early July.

it will be silly busy in Dubrovnik ! Beach is a poor description for what they have. Water is warm but pretty much rock and pebbles. The Hilton is just outside the main entrance to the old city, so you avoid the noisy drunks at night and get to get in early before the cruise ship busloads arrive. funky indoor pool!

Budapest will be much easier and a really great city. Do you want apartment?
Make sure you go to one of the public baths !

Both awesome cities, recommend staying somewhere very central in the Pest part of Budapest to be a part of the vibe.

    In Budapest we stayed at
    https://www.operagardenhotel.hu/
in a two bedroom apartment, plenty of room and in a good spot.
Budapest is a lot of fun and easy to get around.

    Lake Balaton , western Hungary.
Plenty of beach and resorts there!

On Hvar there are some sort of beaches, and airbnb has some places just out of the centre.
Hvar is a bit like the new Bali though, at night lots of loud drunk people.
Split fills the GOT notch but no real beaches and its pretty tight.
If you want to go somewhere stunning and with some paddock for the kids to let of steam, try Plitivice Lakes
    stay here http://www.ethnoplitvice.com/
and you access the lakes after the hordes go home. The hotel also has a little Zoo and other kids stuff as well as a half decent restaurant. If its stinking hot it will be cooler there.
Rovinj is a great little town, no real beach though but lots to do .
    zoo pig !

Interesting, ta. I'm already canvassing a lake area near Bratislava, I'll throw that spot into the mix

Budapest is pretty cool - plenty to see on both sides of the river including side trips in the region on the Danube.

Dubrovnik I hear these days is stupidly busy, so much so that some locals resent the tourists, so possibly not a great option other than a short visit. I was lucky enough to visit briefly during spring in 1989 prior to the Balkan conflict when it was very quiet, so completely different from now.

If you are after a beach experience you might consider lake Balaton in Hungary not too far from Budapest. There are quite a few resort towns around the lake. It is quite a shallow lake, but for splashing around in the water or lying on the beach it is fine. One of the places I stayed was Siofok on the southern side. In peak summer it is a major party town for Germans and Austrians, but in springtime (April, May) it was very quiet while weather is still quite warm.

Otherwise consider other towns on the Croatian coast.

We did both in June '17. I'll make it easy:

    Budapest
Eclectic, interesting, beautiful, tasty. Go there

    Dubrovnik
Cheap, trashy, B Grade, over commercialised, rubbish. Do not go there.

I'd consider somewhere else on the coast, especially if you want a beach

Certainly seeming that way from the feedback
Maybe somewhere nearby to hang and drive down the check it out for a day...

Dubrovnik was on the radar for its airport too, somewhere one stop from Munich is desired.

Appreciate the thoughts folks! Good insight

The weird thing about driving south to Dubrovnik is that you cross into Bosnia for about six kilometers then cross back into Croatia.....four sets of immigration gates in 6K's !!!

first time I drove in Europe was 1976
    there were more borders then
so I was collecting stamps in my passport to go with the ones I'd accumulated coming overland across Asia
driving through Brenner Pass, there was no real checkpoint so I asked a guard for a stamp
he was very grumpy about it, probably because he had to cross over six lanes of fast moving traffic to get to the office where the stamp was kept

This! Plitvice Lakes are stunning. I've been to Croatia many times and never resisted this side trip. If you have the chance, drive back to Hungary through Slovenia: I can't remember the lake/mountains' name now (typing this is the only time I have), but it was simply spectacular. Lots of places to camp.
I loved Dubrovnik, but admittedly, it was many years ago and things change. Don't have pics to attach, only old-fashioned photographs :D
