I have started this thread as a place to discuss snow events that affect the Eastern & Marine region, including forecasts, reports, discussion and pictures. Snow that falls in the following areas could be reported here, including:
    • Canberra,
    • NSW Southern Tablelands & Highlands,
    • NSW Central Tablelands,
    • Barrington Tops,
    • NSW Northern Tablelands
    • The Granite Belt (Qld)
    • Also, anywhere else in the Eastern and Marine region should snow fall outside the usual areas

To kick things off, I note that MetEye is still showing snow in the Central and Southern Highlands of NSW with a cold front passing over NSW overnight Friday / Saturday. Peak snow is around 7:00AM Saturday 13th. There doesn't look to be a lot of snow and it quickly passes.

Snow seems to be restricted pretty much to West of the Divide, above about 900 metres.

Later in the day, there are a couple of pixels if snow in the Barrington tops.

ACT snow usually ends up in the main snow observation threads, as it's fairly close to the major resorts, and there is a tiny one in the ACT.

Onya Steve777 - Pretty mild in Bathurst currently, about 3.5, very light precip around 6 am but say 1mm only. Breeze cool.

I know of light flakeage around Yetholme n Sunny Corner. Surely been some around Shooters Hill too. However it would all be light with minimal precip.

Wind strengthening as I sit here. Pretty sure the wind chill will be a tad obvious today :D

Not much there in open areas. Some nicer stuff in sheltered areas but I didn’t get photos of that. Still great to see some sort of snow and watch a bit falling :emoji_snowflake::emoji_snowflake:

Big snow flakes were falling about 5 mins where I am between Black Springs and Porters Retreat. Temp bottomed out at 0.6°C in the heavy snow shower I just got.

I didnt head up that way, I almost did though but I thought I'd try out the Black Springs area because I had never been there. There wasn't any snow on the ground in the open areas, only in the forests, even at 1300m +. I was looking forward to putting my little car through the paces driving in the snow but there just wasn't enough on the ground. I got a few heavy snow showers though which was nice. The first pic is taken just south of Black Springs in the state forest. Temp was 0.5 with the heavy snow shown.

And it began to clear as I headed southwards off the Oberon Plateau. The break in the weather was brief though because it rained most of the way between Abercrombie River and Taralga.

Looks like that's it for snow for the time being, with none forecast outside the Alpine areas in the next week. The synoptic chart shows a front crossing Eastern NSW tonight and another overnight Wednesday/Thursday, but these seem to lack moisture.

But this was a good little event, with reports of falls from the Oberon Plateau and Mt Victoria, with second hand reports from the Yetholme area. Probably also the high ground near Lithgow and maybe Canabolis, although we have no reports.

Hopefully the snow will be back soon.

Its been a while since we've seen a significant (10+cm) dump in the CTs.

    (correct me if I'm wrong).

Would love to see one this year.

I'm really appreciating these new weather threads, this thread seems a different take on what usually runs on here, thanks to the WZ crew I suppose. I'm a very infrequent weather thread observer, and couldn't be bothered with the tech side of the subject. Thanks for keeping it interesting

Has been a while. I saw 8cm at Shooters Hill in June last year (when I saw DaveM up there) but not sure of any bigger than that since July 2015

I just want enough snow on the ground that I can drive on snow covered dirt roads. I got to in July or August last year (another snow chase) and it was great fun.

Hopefully the decreasing SAM that is occurring will give the CT some good snow events.

Just looking at the synoptic chart, which shows a decent-looking cold front passing across Eastern NSW this morning, one might have expected a bit of snow on the Central Tablelands. The models show 850 temps of 0-1 degrees over the Tablands, with some moisture and cloud, at least West of the Divide. Snow is not mentioned in the forecast, however.

Is anyone on the Tablelands able to confirm whether there was (or was not) any snow?

The cold air is quickly pushed out into the Tasman, but another front passes over the area overnight Wednesday - Thursday, again with some moisture West of the Divide. 850 temps are again down to 0-2, but there's no mention of snow in the forecast or in Meteye.

There was only a fair dusting here overnight (down to about 1,160 m AMSL by the lower shores), so there might not have been anything up north in the CT's, I'm afraid.

We’re at Mt Victoria, house at 1100M, blardy windy last night, 100 kph early evening. It was dry and between 1-2C.
No sign of any snow at Hampden across the valley or further south this morning.

Hi Steve, the precip was really light with only the finest of light mist last night. I feel it was possible some frozen precip occurred on higher ground but perhaps so light it wasn’t obvious

Some early signs of a cut off low next Monday, if the cold pool is deep enough such lows generally deliver the moisture for a good event.

This thread is starting to turn into a mix of current snow obs and a High Country ramblings from WZ!! :)

I'm sure I've got some photos I could share from the past couple of years as well. Pre 2016 I wasn't old enough to drive so I missed the big 2012 and 2015 events.

Back in 2010 I was first on the scene ( so to speak as the little sports car slid into the Commadore ute in front of me ) of a bad prang during the dump of snow on the 16/10. Being a Darwinite I really didn't have warm winter clothes, let alone acclimatization to the cold. The couple in the Triumph were badly injured and trapped in the wreckage, fortunately a couple of other cars stopped, including a nurse, then a Doctor. I did the traffic control ( it was a working day and the highway was as busy as buggery with heaps of clowns trying to get around the accident. The Mt Victoria fireies turned up, then coppers and ambos, I had to hang around and give a statement.....in the freezing windy conditions.... hands numb, wet feet and very effin miserable. Had to return to the Ute every so often to thaw out in the heater

Hanging for a decent snow chase - but alas nothing really on the models across the extended outlook. August however can usually be good for east of the ranges snow chases. Straws crossed.

Amazing where old 2wd cars with a bit of ground clearance could get you. Mind you heaters were often not very flash back then
