Heading up to Hotham this weekend.

Planning on doing a day walk, anyone what state the Edelweiss track is in?

Track notes say it is closed, does that means its actually shut off? Or just in poor nick?

Looking for a direct way to get to Spargo's Hut, though we could go via Loch and Golden Point, or head down Blue Ribbon and then up.

Not as easy as it looks. Thick, dense scrub up over your head. Only if you're hardcore

Some would say drive down, walk up a nice dry creek on skiers right. Three quarters of an hour with no complaints from a motley mob.
Tell us if Spargos (rates paid to Omeo council for many years) is still intact.

Track was in great nick! Apparently it was put in without a proper permit and DELWP had a fit and made the RMB officially 'close' it and take it off the maps.

Hut in good condition, chimney nicely reinforced.

Few things have gone missing since I was last there though; namely Spargo's old felt navy blue coat and the two saws with 'WS' initialled on them.

    Also, here's a cool photo c. 1945 of Spargo's garden.

edit: Interesting. A route for Spargo to pack his supplies to the hut.
The hut once had an overwhelming collection of spirit bottles.
Remember taking down a burst kapok mattress, once apon a time.
Last time that the track was "open" :

Spargo survived the 39 fires by diverting his panning aquaduct into the hut and throwing water at the ceiling.
    Whatabloke !

Yup! He also put an apple crate on his head to protect it from the melting tar dripping from his roof, and kept a loaded shotgun nearby just in case...

No one could believe it when he wandered into town alive a few days later.

The same fires took Hotham Heights Mk1, St Bernard's Hospice, the Feathertop Bungalow, and I believe Diamantina Hut Mk 1...

I wonder at the naming of "Edelweiss track". Was it renamed ? I love directissimas.
Edelweiss Lodge (1947 ?) is close to the top of Blue Ribbon, some distance from the track.
