    The "dreamliner"
would have been better if not crammed punters in with tiny seats
The Airnz and JAL 789's are quite nice

777 for opening up the world to wide bodied twins via the ETOPs certification.

But obviously that's something only the pilots or avgeeks appreciate and Joe Public doesn't give a shit.

If I could work out a decent connection(I can't ) that didn't involve overnighting in Sydney from the GC I'd love to try the JAL 789 to Japan
Maybe they'll start flying from Brisbane

Yep, get what you are saying.

But I think I am curious about what the airlines themselves think.

Historically QF does not make decisions that affect share price dividend in the short term*. It is classic Australian "please everybody" mentality.

*The above opinons are of "dibl0c Skier" only and are not representative of the company or its subsidiaries.

You'd have to ask each of the divisions within. Pilots, Engineers, Fleet Managers, Accountants, CEOs etc. Airlines are complex beasts, often with competing ideologies.

I know each would hold a vastly different perspective.

    Yes they would.

But again. In 50yrs I want to know how many hours each type was in the air. From first flight to last flight ever... (maybe be longer than 50yrs before we know that answer).

I was working in Alice when the 787-9 did it's hot, high, heavy testing.

It was great to watch it fly some circuits, chat to the test pilots and engineers and go for a tour. No photos allowed unfortunately.

Perth to Vancouver is 14,600kms so well within these planes’ capabilities.

    Ha.
    You maybe waiting awhile

    As a footnote

screw sitting on a aeroplane for that long

*though Qantas used to offer a flight that was aloft for 29 hours or so.
So long that you saw the sunrise twice while in the air

Yeah they’re a very different experience on Emirates than elsewhere. So OTT! We burned a tonne of points on an upgrade to First on Emirates A380 for RWC London. Having a shower in mid flight is weird, but also strangely compelling. They do travel so well! One of those 4 flights was on QF metal. The poor cousin, nice but no Emirate style.

I travel pretty well so long haul doesnt bother me too much.

However a couple of hours in HK or Auckland or Wherever isnt too bad, but it adds a few hours overall and you have the risk you’ll miss your connection

Off the top of my head Emirates, Etihad , Qatar and maybe Singapore? have Bars on their A380's
However it seems Emirates have upgraded their suites the most.

    the Tristar
for years I wanted to fly in one
got my chance in 1990 on TWA
    nothing special
this plane was Lockheed’s big hope, and also contributed to their end as a builder of commercial aircraft
the bribery scandals were about flogging them to various airlines, and the first time anyone heard the name Khashoggi

That's easy - the DC10 was the one missing an engine. Or a rear cargo door.

the Tristar had the exhaust end of the rear engine faired into the body, while on the DC-10 it was positioned at the base of the tail fin but above the body
    where did you see them?

I still think my best experience was business class upstairs in the 747/Qantas

The area was so spacious there was a table in the middle with newspapers on it.

and after takeoff, all the passengers got together and had a game of indoor cricket (just kidding)

    LOL
I love the variety of life experiences here!

    Soooo different to my life.
My folks had travelled as kids but they holidayed with their own children locally. My first plane flight was a little tiny thing to Rottnest Island as a 14 (? Thereabouts) year old. Mum hyperventilated and set me off. Was not fun - back to thre ferry crossing.

My first real flight was as an interpreter for the WA team going to the Deaf Games in Tasmania at 21. I started interpreting the safety demo for them and they took a survey amongst themselves - they’d ALL flown before, so they told me to sit down and pay attention

Made up for it since then though.

True - upper deck on the 747 'was / still is' a special place to travel.

A380 has the best customer (i.e. passengers) reviews of any aircraft - its the airline CFO's who have always disliked it. The 787 just doesn't have the cabin space required for genuine long haul flights IMHO.

Also, I get a good feeling looking out the window and seeing those four engines when you are 1000+ miles from land over the Pacific....

    Me either!
PBs stories of landing at a Russian Airport with the scattered carcasses of retired, crashed and burnt out planes all over the place made me want to do any and all travel in Russia by ground transport. Although the youngest has some tales about catching the train in Russia that’s curl your hair also.

My old boss told me about a flight he took on Aeroflot.

They didn't have room for all the bags in the hold.

So they brought the bags inside . Then pushed them against the exit door in a big pile.
A cargo net around the bags secured them.

on Cathay 747 upper deck business flight, HK to Paris, we had just got on board at about midnight and settled into our lie-flat beds
a typhoon hit, and the plane stayed on the tarmac for three hours
I slept through the whole thing, woke just before landing
best sleep I’ve ever had on a plane

I would have thought for routes like Sydney-Dubai, where there is such high passenger volume, they're probably still going to be economical for some time to come. There are at least 3 Emirates flights a day from Sydney to Dubai - that's 1600 people, many of who are fanning out to smaller destinations that would never need a direct flight from Sydney and hence will pass through a hub. You'd need probably two extra flights (ie two more planes) to move the same number of people with the smaller but more efficient planes.

So I'd be surprised if they disappear in the near future.

I do like the bar/lounge setup on some airlines A380’s. Flew business on qatar, and spent a lot of time in there. Just good to get out of the seat somewhere different, talk to the crew etc

An airliner is flying accross country, when the pilot comes on the PA to announce, "we have some bad news. One of the engines just failed and as a result, we will be delayed by 30 minutes."

A bit later, the pilot returns, "we have some more bad news. Another engine just failed, and we will be delayed an additional hour."

Another bit later, "Sorry folks, more bad news. A third engine just failed, and so, since we will be running only on the one remaining engine, the flight will be delayed by another two hours."

At this point, a disgruntled passenger turns to his neighbor and says, "I sure hope that last engine keeps working or else we'll be up here all night!"

    and a blonde

A jet was on its way to New York,

when a blonde seated in Economy Class got up

moved to the First Class section

found an empty seat and sat down.

The flight attendant watched the blonde make herself comfortable in First Class,

then went over and asked to see her boarding pass.

Noting that the pass was for an Economy seat,

    the flight attendant said,

I’m sorry, but you didn’t pay for the First Class seat,

so you’ll have to go back to the Economy section.

    The blonde replied,

Listen you, I’m blonde, I’m beautiful,

I’m going to New York, and I’m staying right here in First Class.

The flight attendant went to the cockpit

and told the pilot and co pilot that there was a blonde from Economy Class

who was sitting in First Class and wouldn’t move back to her assigned seat.

The co pilot went to the passenger area and approached the blonde.

He explained that it was against the rules for her to sit in First Class

when she had only bought an Economy Class ticket.

    I’m sorry he concluded.

but you’ll have to return to your Economy section seat.

The woman snorted and tossed her blonde locks,

    Listen you, she snapped,

I’m blonde, I’m beautiful, I’m going to New York,

and I’m staying right here in First Class.

The co pilot returned to the cockpit

and told the pilot that he might want to have the police waiting to arrest the blonde when the plane landed.

She refuses to return to her Economy Class seat

    the co pilot explained

because, she says, she’s blonde and beautiful and going to New York.

I’d better handle this, said the pilot.

    I’m married to a blonde,

so I have experience speaking their language.

With that, the pilot entered the passenger area,

    went over to the blonde,

    and whispered in her ear.

The blonde immediately stood up, stormed out of First Class

and sat back in her assigned Economy Class seat.

The flight attendant and the co pilot were amazed at how easily the pilot had persuaded the blonde to move.

    How did you do it?

    they asked him.
    Simple, he replied.

I told her that the First Class section wasn’t going to New York
