To be honest. Its a shock how quick aircraft can be sent to the "graveyard"

Once a aircraft is worth more in scrap than it makes .... see yah
    Brutal

IMO Korean/Asiana and Singapore will scrap theirs first

Guess what? Booked Emirates to NYC via Dubai 1st class using FF points on A380. Done previously, absolutely brilliant despite average Sydney lounge facility. Showering at 35k feet is surreal.
Emirates have quietly changed the OB flight from A380 to 777. Not happy Jan.
Mind you on same trip last year just us in 1st and less then 50% in business on the upper deck.
Qantas on the other hand SYD-LAX is constantly full

No absolutely full, all classes. That route is one where the A380 excels. Supposedly best cost per passenger mile.

I flew on 380 to both Dubai and Doha on my way to Europe at least 5 times. Was very lucky when they upgraded me to business (overbooked flight) in 2014 from Dubai to Syd. Great experience. Economy, not so much. I found the seats very uncomfortable.
I also got sick of these flights being always parked at remote locations & taking buses to the terminals both in Dubai and Doha. I decided to fly with Singapore airlines onto London next time. With a good break in Singapore :)

What was it about that aspect of the experience that particularly bothered you?

In Brisbane and Sydney there are currently services conducted by a national carrier that require a bus from the aircraft to and from the terminal.

    Absolutely.

So whilst it forms part of the overall experience, it's really the airport operator and not the aircraft type.

I rather economy on the A380 to premium - those seats have just the wrong profile for me. Sore back every time. Booked PE coming home from Japan - hoping for an upgrade or not an A380 or that all the core work I’ve done since I last flew PE holds my aging back together. (Just checked - it’s a 747, dunno if they are the same seats tho)

Didn't get on the first bus so had to wait for a second in searing heat. Packed as sardines. Stairs from the airplane very uncomfortable for elderly people. The bus also jerked unexpectedly and a few people fell

Happened to us in Sydney flying with Tiger. The missus had this grand plan of waiting until everyone had boarded and then casually walk the bridge and sit in your seat. She was not impressed to find a bus waiting for herLOL

I'm astonished that people have been comparing A380s with B787s, as they are different sizes of aeroplane that don't compete with each other in any way.

Just for people who don't know, these are the types of plane produced this century by size (more or less):

Double deck (huge): Airbus 380, Boeing 747

    Big wide body: A340, B777, A350

Mid size wide body: B787, A330

    Single aisle. A319/320/321, B737, A220

If people want to know a little more via 6 minute videos on YouTube:
Great quality, first rate videos on wide variety of airliners: Mustard
Channel with good original videos on every commercial jet (even old British and Ruski ones) Skyships Eng
Probably the best international flight review channel (although he is from Adelaide) DennisBunnik Travels

If you want a private apartment (with shower) on an A380, this is the video for you.

I once remarked on the bus ride way from the gate at Dubai to the plane that they seemed to be driving us all the way to Geneva. I've been through Dubai 14 times and never once boarded through an aerobridge.

It's a PITA after a long flight, especially if it's summer and the temperature is nudging 50.

I don't disagree that it's a pain but I reckon I've done it once in 14 years and sometimes we go through twice a year.

I started the comparison. I know they are not remotely alike.

But the media both pitted them against each other. They were both brand new aircraft's very innovative for different reason and the manufacturers were both risking a lot/banking on their idea of the future. hub to hub or point to point.

Considering I worked in comms for Boeing and spent my days summarising the media reports and collating them and sending them around the world (yes Boeing HQ cared what Australia wrote about them!) It's not surprising I have an interest in who won the race so to speak.

A380 is great for Economy with its 20" wide seats whereas with JAL being the exception airlines have narrowed seats on the B787. However if Airbus ever brings out the mooted 11 across configuration then it will lose that one advantage.

Yeah I agree re Economy on the A380 - I flew it with both Singapore and Emirates in the early years of the model's release and it was pretty damn good. I don't know what it's like on the 787 but I do know most carriers have crammed in more seats than Boeing envisaged. I've been fortunate enough to fly QF Business and Jetstar "Business" on the 787 but I certainly wouldn't be paying retail for either in a hurry.

The unfortunate reality of airline travel is that anything much more than 3 hours in an Economy seat/cabin is fairly unpleasant. Where the manufacturers create some niceties through clever design, once the launch fanfare is forgotten these features (legroom, pitch, seats abreast) are quickly eroded by cost/profit considerations. Have a look at what Emirates did with some of the business cabins on the 777 when they did the refresh in 2017: 2:3:2 across - the only longhaul airline in the world to do so. Who is going to pay upwards of AUD 3500 to sit between two other people? It's absolute madness and they're now spending a bucket to fix it.

I guess we all either pay for the product we want/like, vote with our feet, or put up and shut up. It's sad that for the A380 the airlines have a product that customers generally really like but they can't/don't want to find that cost/profit balance to give such an impressive machine the longevity it deserves.

Exactly, I have a friend who flies business class to Europe fairly often and he has a fair degree of choice over which flights he takes. So he looks at flight review videos from channels he trusts so he can get a decent business class seat with good food rather than a half arsed premium economy seat that is marketed as business class.

I fly to Japan once a year on average and use the Jetstar "business" product
It is so lame but when I see the Economy cabin, at 6'4" tall it fills me with cold dread so I cough up
It's nearly impossible to get a PE seat in QANTAS Bne Tokyo in school holidays
I fly to Europe NAm maybe twice every 3 years and always fly business
It beggars belief that some smart guy at Emirates thought you could do 232
When I'm doing a flight search I just exclude Emirates because of that

It's actually why I wish there was a JAL ANA service out of Brisbane
Would love to try their PE or business product
As mentioned daylight saving means overnighting in Sydney from GC to use them and that's just not happening

The Qantas A380 20" Economy seat I measured was as wide as the ANA business class lie flat bed seat in their B7B7s. Fantastic. Also right down the very back row of the A380 there is/was no issue about toilet queues etc around you with them being through the curtain in that very back section, contrasted with the Qantas densified B787, which no longer can be called a Dreamliner, where passengers sit across the narrowed aisle from the toilet door.

I posted before how at Sun Peaks I got to know a retired Boeing interior design engineer whose last project was the B787 and in 2007 when we visited he took us across to the plant for the tour and back in the exhibit building there was a cross section of the yet to fly B787. He explained that unlike Airbus which was betting on the hub and spoke model Boeing was betting on point to point snd that the 'Dreamliner' tag represented the design concept of at long last making air travel less like being in a long metal tube with low ceilings (B747 overhead bins) but more like a spacious hotel entrance and room.

Market forces have destroyed that concept but Qantas and others dishonestly keep the tag. So when Qantas unveiled the B787 in its densified form Joyce harped on about 1" more legroom than the A380 not mentioning at all the seats were more than 2" narrower and they consistently use the Dreaminer tag dishonestly.

A very poor product IMO. Part of that relates to their poor service overnight from Haneda. Qantas on those sectors quickly do a light suppervthen turn down the lights before a breakfast service 2hrs out. ANA keep their lights brightly lit (in their almost white interior) for about three hours for a full dinner lasting to mid flight and have no breakfast service making for little sleep.

    I've never understood that.
Sleep is more important than food.
    I eat at 7pm
    Then 7am

Why do airlines feed me at 11pm and 4am?

Because they enjoy torturing people. Why else feed you dinner at 2am?

IMO it's a hangover from the golden age of air travel .

I'll happily take my own food on a plane.
