That's why altitiude beats latitude every time.
Hope the racing is good today! I'd like to see a Marcel smoke show.
best he could do was second
Swiss lady I was standing with was very happy to see him lose
I then discovered that some Norwegians are entitled and aggressive with it!
I was standing guard on the finish area when two guys in Norge team outfits arrived without the right accreditation and just barged through
they were twice the size of me and the even older other guy and neither of us were sufficiently verbally intimidating to stop them
they must have phoned others because a few more followed
finally Kristofferson’s father showed up and bellowed that he demanded to be allowed in
there actually wasn’t any issue about him but apparently there’s a FIS rule about who gets in immediately after a race

Weather is weird. Its 10 deg spring weather in Berlin today.

Was about -3 when I left Val D'Isere at 7am on Saturday morning. Bus ride was a nightmare due to traffic. 7 hours instead of 3.5. When I got to Geneva around 14:00, I was comfortable in a t shirt on the balcony at the food court balcony at the airport. Btw - I've been scathing of Geneva airport in the past. They've lifted their game. Its pretty good now. Good food and facilities. Arrivals is a bit of a shitfight but given its such a key entrypoint to the Alps, thats probably unavoidable. Its a great feeling to be surrounded by so many people who share the same holiday passions as you.

Yes just checked in overnight stay near Brenner Pass +5 C!
:gives:

It certainly looks like I got the best of the weather before it got too warm :)

Last week of Jan in 3 Valleys was cold with fresh snow pretty much every night. Following week in St Anton has no new snow but it at least stayed cold.

I know this because I see ladies wearing the ensembles everywhere - in the volunteer centre, at the hostel
they certainly look better than my long johns

How come you have seen ladies ski underwear that much that you can judge? :blb:

But you are right - wife uses them but I have never seen it. :(

funny about cultural differences
sitting happily alone at my table at the hostel in Åre, suddenly I’m surrounded by Germans
one of them is eating out of the saucepan, coughing loudly and appears to have just blown his nose on his t-shirt
his wife is sitting opposite him
my own spouse would go completely apeshit if I did any of that
admittedly she’s from Brisbane, last bastion of colonial gentility
thankfully there are no sun lounges

Ha - I am 3/4 German by blood my wife tells me.
She would use her fathers sword on me if I would behave like that - maybe it was good to have a british brother in law at a very early age.

especially those mountains
It is an area of skiing we have always returned to once and awhile ever since 1980's purley for the beauty of the mountains.
Sella Ronda is not that important - just cruising around - today St.Chrestina - Seceda - Ortisei - Seiser Alm - bus to Monte Pana - back Plan de Gralba.
Great weather for pist skiers - full sun - just 10 degrees to warm.:(:mad:

Worst thing that can happen to you on a skiing trip is not lack of snow - to much snow- rain - or brake a bone! No coming down with the flu staying in bed while the others go out skiing that is the wost thing that can happen to you - and it hit me yesterday!:headbang:

Yes, that really sucks. I know the feeling. Had that in Japan last year. Hope you get some decent treatment and can get back out there again.

How are things in Hinterglemm @Whiteman ?

Positively hot here, with +6 or +7c for the last few days. The snow quality up high is still good, but spring-like in the afternoon. The runs up behind Hinterglemm, which are in full sun, were slushy by 11.00 am this morning. But, the sun is shining, there is no wind, and it is just great to be back here, considering that the wife broke her wrist only 2 weeks ago. She is out giving it a real crack, but we head home in the early afternoon before it gets too heavy.

I’ve just spent two days in Oslo
where else in the world would you find people standing on a city street corner holding a pair of cross country skis?
staying near the station, I saw dozens of people with ski bags - not so unusual, similar in Munich a couple of years ago
it’s 6:07am at the airport, and there’s a guy next to me in xc gear quaffing a schooner

now there are seven of them, all chug-a-lugging and getting a bit rowdy
hope they’re not going to Doha

Came across this new possibility of overmight stay in tiny hut.
Regret I did not take a picture of the hut itself.

Light rain at the bottom in Hinterglemm this morning. :( Hopefully snowing up the top.

A complete contrast to our trip last year with -23c temps. This year has been very warm with +6 or 7c temps every day.

Alagna ! Is great! It bills itself as the freeride paradise. There's exactly one lift out of Alagna up to the Monterosa.
We were lucky as it snowed about 50cm just as we got there, in a below average year and hasn't snowed since.

If you like 2000m continuous off-piste runs, a huge selection of short/long and steep/mild couloirs, sorry.... canales... skiing to different villages, fantastic mountain refugio food, and a cool small village at the end of the line, then Alagna.

If you want a throbbing town with pulsating nightlife and lots of groomed pistes, then you are in the wrong place.

The joke was that our guide knew two words of English. "Keep up". He's down there somewhere.

Anytime I set off an avalanche (on the left) I like to document it. It was expected and ok.

Canale! We got extra, detailed instructions through here. "The stream is cold and deep. Don't fall in".

I should mention the food and I know it's Italy and to be expected, but wow it was good. It's Italy so it's essential for everyone to sit down for a proper meal. No sliding a tray along a rail in a cafe and grabbing a burger.

Half way up a mountain with only snowmobile or lift access they have a 'pasta of the day' special. And it's fantastic.
If pasta poisoning is a thing then I would've got it. I ate pasta 20 days in a row. Still lost 8 kgs.

Dessert, and great coffee to finish. Somehow they do a coffee for 1 or 2 euro when my crap coffee in Sydney is more.

The entrance to one of the mountain refugios. The wild game is curing. Need to put an order in three months ago.
