So we landed in Milan, didn’t need to pinch bub as we got ushered through immigration regardless. Bit of Italian organisation getting the rental car bit got there in the end. We don’t really fit, it’s good being the driver!!

I booked an Airbnb on Lake Orta when I saw the unseasonably warm temps, we’ve got 2 days here to relax and get over jet lag before we ski.

On the way up we had lunch overlooking Lake Maggiore, was beautiful, mild and still, and we got some great views of Monte Rosa as we drove up and over to Orta.

View from the apartment is acceptable:

Am sure a central African nation would have more efficient airport staff than Milan!!

Praying that it will be good tomorrow. It's apparently snowing at the top, but we had the day off, and watched all the really wet people coming down to the bottom, looking cold and miserable. We chinked our glasses of cab-sav and smiled.

Lots of Dutchies and Poms packing up and going home. Hopefully the lower slopes will survive the *ain.

Ski test in Pila next week then through to Cham.

Very different trip this year due to bub, have MIL for the ski test and the first week in Cham, after that who knows.

But we have a car and want to explore a bit, maybe just tag team half days each, I wouldn’t mind checking out a few places in the wider area. I want to ski Balme where Candide films all his videos.

Do we get reviews of the skis you try out, or it is more Professional inconfidence?

More reviews than you can handle.

All the skis have been announced now, it’s when we see them in canberra in October that we have to keep quiet.

Oh that's a shame, just trying to verify my seasonal forecast. Looks like Austria & Eastern alps had a great season, France (Western Alps) had an average season?

I kind of solved the issue. I just looked at the snow extent maps, and the low res snow depth maps used for the weather model initialisation. It was clear that the big winner of this season (at this point at least) was the Eastern Alps.

More on the next month in the long term, and my personal seasonal forecast verification:

The weather cleared up, and we were out early catching some freshies. Saw our first Wizard on the slopes, but on closer examination, it turned out to be a Monk. LOL

Would love to spend more time in those valleys. From Alagna or Gressony on the other side, you access the refugios for Mt Rosa

    Yeah pretty much.

Snow in Pila isn’t much to write home about, good ‘home’ conditions for the ski test.

    But that view OMFG.

Full pano from Mont Blanc, Jorasses, Combin, Matterhorn to Monte Rosa plus all the other 4000-ers in between.

    been there, done that
more recently I returned from the USA with a few hundred photos on an SD card
I copied them to my MB Pro and deleted them from the SD card to prepare for my trip to Sweden
the MB Pro crashed before I backed up
the processor and the SSD are all on the same board
one of the ‘known issues’ is that this kind of crash can destroy the data on the SSD
    as happened to me
at least I had uploaded some pics to fb

Have you caught the carpet at the very top? The view you've described but also Gran Paradiso looming behind...

Are you staying in Aosta? What do you think? I've mentioned previously if I were to buy a place in the Alps it would be there. Pila is a fun hill and then so many great options in an hour or so....

No not yet, we’re on a bit of a mission to get through the important skis but some weather is coming in so I’ll go up there tomorrow I reckon.

It’s definitely on option for a ski base, that’s for sure.

    https://www.matterhornparadise.ch/en/Company/Investments-and-projects/Alpine-Crossing

"The cableway connection between the Matterhorn glacier paradise (Klein Matterhorn) and Testa Grigia sees the realization of a once-in-a-generation dream: to be able to travel the entire way from the Matterhorn village of Zermatt (Switzerland) to Breuil-Cervinia (Italy) without having to get your boots wet! It’s a visionary cableway project that will further enhance the status of Zermatt-Matterhorn as a premium high-alpine destination. The panoramic journey, lasting around one hour from Switzerland to Italy or vice versa, will cover an altitude difference of over 4000 metres – the greatest by any cableway in Europe."

To be completed by Spring 2021. Doesn't it get windy up there?

Andermatt expansion to Sedrun. I was there just in 2014 and Sedrun was an off-piste, powder, day trip.
Return by catching the Matterhorn Gotthard train, which runs along the valley. Then an Egyptian billionaire put
$2 billion into Andermatt, and now Sedrun is lift linked (and in 2020 to Disentis) plus a ton of other upgrades.

Euro skiing is big and they have big plans and budgets. They actually build stuff.

So I listened when our Alagna guide talked about the Zermatt/Cervinia link to Monte Rosa. And then i googled.

    https://www.ft.com/content/f748f1c0-cb4d-11e8-9fe5-24ad351828ab
Plans have been drawn up to string two new lifts linking the two resorts’ ski areas. Zermatt is already connected to Cervinia; Champoluc to Gressoney and Alagna, the villages in the next two valleys to the east. The new lifts would create a vast contiguous ski area — with more than 540km of pistes, second largest in the world after France’s Trois Vallées.

That cam is on the Bettaforca Refugio where the mocetta "the aroma is delicate" was hanging.

The Refugio Punta Jolanda had a better spectacular setting. Only ended up here once but food was also great.
FFS get those skis out of the way.

Speaking of Austria, im thinking of heading there for first time next year. Can anyone please recommend an area that ticks these boxes:
    - large enough for two weeks stay (skill range beginner to figjam)
    - activities for non skiers and young children (we’ll have a group with 5-6 kids under 4 so this one’s key!)
    - ideally staying near lifts, but not sure how compatible that is with above requirement
We are flexxy on dates so will avoid the busy times. What are the busy times? Thanks for any tips

@Bloke im far from an expert on Austria but I was in Saalbach this year and big ski area, awesome lifts, great for beginners, cruising and fast reds but also some awesome freeride/offpiste for advanced. Lifts are world class, apres is great and accom is close to slopes. Can’t comment re kids.

It was spring-like when we left on Friday, so you will need to be up high, or pray for a change in the weather.
