How you handling the temps in the Dolomites? Selva/Wolkenstein looks pretty cold.

Berlin right now is the coldest I've ever experienced it.

Had to endure a day down in the lowlands today, but refreshingly it was snowing & zero near sea level on the outskirts of Venice.

Nice to have a week of decent chill before heading back to the furnace. I think minus 13C is where the personal thermostat kicks in, above that is shorts weather. Walked back from dinner tonight in San Martino Di Castrozza in just one layer & was starting to feel a certain chill. Thermometer outside door was dropping quick -14.5C, was only -6C at 6pm.

Snow quality is very good, amongst the best I've seen south of the divide. Dry, fluffy, flake definition. Sky almost totally clear now. Tomorrow should be quite good.

Must thank Mike Pow for steering me toward SMDC, but he seem absent this season?

Every man & his dogs breakfast can head to Japan & slay up waist high powder & be heroic....

But like the way in Europe you will frequently feel genuine shitting of oneself. And then some ten year old kid will just huck past you!!

Quite enjoy heights, but when pressed against door of Cortina d'Ampezzo funivia on way up, with clouds below, did check the suspiciously flimsy door latch was firmly closed.

The chill is decent in the Dolomiti. Not budging much from -10C in village (San Martino di Castrozza), around -20C at 2000m, frostbiting cold above that. Top ups of snow each evening. Too cold to ski for many people, especially with the families around the place. Must confess to checking grappa stock at number of refugios.

Plenty of space to open up on near empty groomers, sharing fresh lines with only two others in terrain of consequence beneath Rosetta funivia today. Even colder on north facing terrain, beautiful snow. Sensational arcing big mountain turns beneath the grandeur of the carbonate cliffs. Some pockets of windslab to be wary of, but generally decent (2) stability.

Growing on me these Dolomites, already planning a summer climbing trip.

Down to single digits, 8 more sleeps before we arrive in Cham town, sorry but had to vent somewhere, getting very excited :)
Bit of crevasse hopping on the Bossons glacier many moons ago, still have both the pink North face outfit and K2 Extreme’s in the garage, might have to bring’em for our reunion :)

Continued to snow all day in San Martino, warmed up a little, but still great snow. Snuck in a few runs before had to leave reluctantly. Heavy snow continuing right across lowlands, sitting around 0C but looking more like industrial Hokkaido than the Po Valley of Italy.

Strange sight seeing all the olives, palms & grape vines under snow. The clientele of the Autogrill thought it more strange seeing me in thongs & t-shirt, after a few days of -20C, 0C feels temperate.

Of course as you can imagine, the Italian's adjusted their driving behaviour to suit the conditions.

Arrived back in Iseo this evening, 15cm in the carpark, according to my partner, this is most uncommon in her town.

That outfit is like something from an 80's cigarette ad!!

Ironically, saw a few of similarly dated outfits, albeit faded, still rocking around the Dolomites. And lots of smokers. So the advertising must have worked?

Just saw French TV news..four randonneurs killed in an avalanche in the southern alps. One injured, the guide survived. One metre of snow previously, then a ten degree rise in temperature. The guide is being held with homicide charges pending.
    Tragedy all round. Very sad.

Been in London for the last few days. Snowiest I've ever seen it. Had snow on ground for 5 days and will be white for another few yet. Pretty cold but feels almost balmy compared with Berlin's last week of temps. Red brick London is much prettier with a white coat. View from my sister's place in Hampstead attached.

Its quite amazing how inept the UK is at coping. Its not like its on the equator. Snow does happen and the services here just aren't equipped to deal with it properly. I've seen tens of cars attempting u-turns and getting stuck, sliding into other cars etc. Back streets are a nightmare.

Apparently Geneva Airport has had loads of flights cancelled yesterday and today. My FB feed is filled with unhappy skiers.

Yeah my in-laws in West Yorkshire have described the chaos that has descended as a result of all the snow.

Followed by the usual "we wish we were in Australia for the heat".

    My response:

"Yeah, na, this is a place where you shower to cool off then instantly begin sweating again".

Gotta say though, UK is stunning when it snows.

Jet lag is a devil on return.

Fighting to sleep until 0500 today, gave up & played with the dogs.

Not to mention the thermal shock of -30C to +30C. Thought I snuck past summer. No such luck.

Yeah my kids travel advice is pay for a seat for em unless they're tiny and not wanting to jump non stop. By them time they're three you can drill them well, my oldest is great to fly with although after two long flights it is inevitable that they run out of patience

    SATURDAY 03 MARCH 2018

After two days of gale force winds which ripped the slates off the roof; sub zero temperatures with no heating as we waited for oil to be delivered; and next to no snow in Llandeilo, it was time to see what #thebeastfromtheeast had done to the Brecon Beacons National Park

But first stop on the way was some icicle hunting in Waterfall Country at Melincourt Falls near Neath

Crazy temp shift in Berlin. Was -14 a fortnight ago. We had 17 degree sunshine yesterday. And didn't even have to travel across the world for it!

    THURSDAY 08 MARCH 2018

    THE BEST FROM THE WEST
After #thebeastfromtheeast 's failure to deliver stellar conditions in the Central Beacons Massif last week it was great to see a 'normal' storm arrive from the West Wednesday night into Thursday morning

15-20 cm of dry, light powder fell without too much wind, providing consistent coverage on all aspects

And the sun came out too

    THURSDAY 08 MARCH 2018

After ascending in glorious sunshine, the clouds rolled in as soon as I put the skis on

Firm and fast below Pen-y-Fan into Cwm Llwch

Soft and going to ground skier's left of Corn Du

Then cruisey, bluebird turns back to Pont-ar-Daf car park

    A smorgasbord of sliding

    FRIDAY 09 MARCH 2018

THE YIN AND THE YANG OF WELSH SKIING

I summitted early to catch what I hoped was a glorious sunrise, with the peaks of the Central Beacons Massif cresting above a Spring inversion

Unfortunately Mother Nature had other ideas

Mist, fog, swirling winds, and an overnight thaw which had eaten into the snowpack made for some challenging skiing and routefinding

Still better than being indoors though
