Saas Fee (1800m):
You registered with skiline I think? The do a great job tracking your runs, but as a free service they will pass your address on to the respective resorts so you'll get these emails. Some of them have English versions, I recall getting both German & English versions for one resort. You can unsubscribe individually though and that is honoured.
1 degree in Verbier at 1450m, and 4 degrees in Zermatt at 1600m. Goes to show how much colder it is further west by a matter of 40km. There are also very low lapse rates with temps. All the snow that fell yesterday has been washed away by rain below about 1700m.
Playing out just as models called it.
Looks like a dogs breaky by Thursday.
Temp Advection at work. Plenty of rotation in this one and a good bit of cold to come as you can see on the plots below hours apart.
Snow line in Chamonix and most other resorts looks to have stayed around 2200m overnight with more snow falling above that. Although must have been very marginal, with the cams at 2000m showing heavy signs over snow melt.
This system is producing some serious winds along the western coast of Italy. A 193kph gust has been recorded at 1800m in the Abruzzo Mountains. 160kph winds else where along the coast due to a line of severe thunderstorms that moved through.
The view from Seiser Alm- Val Gardena. Dantercepies cam looking juicy. Solid rain in town.
Snow all the way to the town in Chamonix at 1000m. Zermatt also looking very nice.
Snowing in central Courmayeur this morning ~ 1330 asl
Didn't really look too much into this one but a pretty surprise snowfall from yesterday in parts of the Aosta Valley and north west Italy. Around 30cm above 1300m going off some of the photos on this facebook page! Riale in Northern Italy at 1700m saying they got over a metre of snow
GFS has thrown up some weirdness around the 19th that is a huge contrast to the previous runs. Grain of salt imo.
Means pretty much zilch from this far out but sure looks good! With that type of set up, hopefully the eastern alps can get a bit of love ie. Cortina, as I will be there in mid Dec!
Devastation in Italy.
Meanwhile in Sölden....
The weather pattern looks to have finally changed with a stationary high forecast to bring down some pretty cold air starting this weekend. Not a lot of moisture but GFS is going for a pretty widespread and very cold outbreak beginning next week. Snow forecast for much of eastern Europe over the next 10 or so days, and finally some decent snowfall for eastern European resorts.
Upper jet stream is a mess for the next week with most of the polar air inbound from the East through Eastern Europe. Fickle weather will prevail with a reverse jet.
The blocking high through the North Sea needs to trot on for any sort of sign of a traditional winter systems IMO.
The week following the 25th looks very interesting imo. Wicked temp anomolies on GFS.
They've got 39 days to get a base down so I've got something to ski on.
Bring on cold please - preferably with moisture.
Bulk of the precip will be down South until around the 25th. After that it gets a little volatile prediction wise.
I'm hoping that some time in December (before the 24th) they get a decent fall to cover things in white.
In the mean time they can get some artificial ribbons going.
57 for me. I'd like to place my order now - minimum 2 meters fall between now and then for the 3 vallees. Will happily accept more.
63 for me but my dads more concerned he’s hoping to do 2 weeks from 10th December. Tignes, Val T, Zermat or the Australian glaciers look like best options for him unless he gets more snow
Aussie glaciers ?
Zermatt/Cervinia looks fantastic at this early stage. I would opt for that given the choice of going on December 10.
I wish. Bloody autocorrect
6-10 cms overnight here in Bled.
All melted away today
Any gurus want to give a basic overview of what the models suggest is in the works for the Alps in the next couple of weeks?
Only 32 days until I am due to be on snow. First stop is Ziller valley in Austria.
Looking white and snowy on the Serre Chevalier cams
Things may be brewing at last in Savoie. 3 Vallées could get something in the next week or so..... fingers, toes, legs, arms and eyes all crossed!
At St Anton on the 22nd of Dec.
Starting to get slightly worried.
Still a month out, but it looks like a below average start to the season, which would indicate a base of around 1m at that time of the year based on the last 6-7 years.
Things are starting to look good from around the 3rd Dec.
Yes IMO. Still not locked in but some good indications there. Stay tuned.
Cold snap in Austria atm. First snow in Salzburg city and Vienna.
You could still get lucky but yes Xmas skiing in Europe is a gamble. Last year it was alright. Been an extended autumn and a late start to winter here in Berlin. Only pulled out the down jacket 10 days ago. Unfortunately we're forecast to get double digit temps again this coming week
Things due to get cool and unsettled next weekend. Off piste in Europe at Christmas may be unlikely but it looks like there will be runs open at most hills by then.
All models now lining up big falls for most French, Italian, Austrian and Swiss resorts, mainly on the northern and western edges of the alps. ECMWF on yr.no has around 120cm for Chamonix village at 1000m between saturday to monday (with probably a little rain early on) and almost 1.8m up high on Windy. Good totals all round, and the first proper cold for the southern half of Europe!
I like this
Sustained vorticity and a lingering embeded trough taking centre stage on this one. Looking quite minty imo.
Austrian media and wetter.at is predicting a major event with biggest falls around the Arlberg. Also higher chances of a white Christmas in major centres. 50 percent for Innsbruck
So pretty much sure to be something to slide on at 1500 metres plus in the Zillertal in a few weeks?
Welcome to the world of webcams
I don’t like to look at them in case it’s not pretty. The rain they’ve just had/having makes me a bit jumpy.
I really do have low expectations. I’ll be happy skiing on piste taking in the views and experiencing the Euro atmosphere. I reckon 500 metres vertical would be enough.
Its only 6 days into December atm. Zillertal will be awesome for you imo.
I'm loving @Kletterer's confidence!!
Christmas will be ok
