I've got the German one going.
How fast and icy is that course... they are doing a small check before almost every turn!

Check? Or pivot? Check is generally a hard edge set, with ski angled across the direction of skier travel, right before beginning a transition. Very slow. In contrast, these guys are often pivoting their a$$es off. They have to. Too dang turny and steep to ski arc to arc

Here's a pivot pic. The pivot is complete, and he's in the process of feathering into the carve. There is still more feathering drift to come. Notice if he were carving cleanly, he would turn right inside the pole.

Fastman can you explain the technique of 'pivot' in contrast to the 'check' in checking speed? We seem to use the term "check" to mean check your speed as in "slow it down". I am thinking it might be a different use of the word for similar things???

Hi Flakey. OK, I now get what yardsale was alluding to with the "check" term. A pivot's primary purpose is to allow a skier to shorten the radius of their turn when the skis can not do it by carving alone. If you look closely to any steep section of a World Cup ski race, you will see it being used pervasively. The offset course setters use in those sections is such that it just can't be skied arc to arc.

By checking, you guys are apparently referring to a deliberate speed dumping strategy that comes between the time the pivot is completed, and the time the carving of the new turn begins. The period between the end of the pivot, and the beginning of carving, we call feathering. The racer is trying to go from pivoting to carving as cleanly, quickly, and smoothly as possible, dumping as little speed as possible in the process.

Generally, racers do not want to include a speed check after their pivot. It just adds time to the clock. It's usually only done as a last resort desperation tactic, to keep them in the course. When it is included, it's done by simply lengthening the feathering period. Start the pivot earlier, than hang there awhile, skidding sideways and slowing down, as they wait for the gate to arrive, and the time for the new turn to be initiated.

This can also be seen in substandard pivots, when it's not being done deliberately. The racer pivots too soon, then has to wait to begin their turn, skidding and slowing all the while. Sometimes it's just poor execution, but often it's a sign of a racer who's skiing timidly, and cautiously. The term "double turning", if you've heard that, often has it's origin in this mistake, though it can also happen when bad turn initiation timing happens during arc to arc transitions too.

Pivoting aggressively, and timely, and feathering with skill, is one of the things that separates the podium racers and the also rans.

I'll interrupt the least interesting of ski technique discussions - nomenclature - to comment that the second run of the Womens SL in Courchevel is on.

I use the web browser in my PS3, and use livetv.ru/en to find the streams.

    It's pretty hit and miss.

I don't think you could use an internet tv, but would like to be proven wrong.

which is my goal .... have internet, have connectivity speed, have bandwidth, have TV with LAN or connectivity.

I reckon all I need is some time to play with all the bits and a Jaycar account.

    Re: Eurosport - World Championships

I saw a little bit of it during a 'breaking the ice" last night. It looks really interesting, but the gate set is very fluid and down-the-hill. Definitely a different kind of GS race.
