we just picked up from Vic Rds(kinda complex getting info) Site that Falls Creek(Bogong Highplains Rd) is closed ...at moment.so no access from Mt Beauty to Falls Ck....and we gather that Snow Rd must have some issues and definitely areas with water over roadway..

so forum users take care at night cos the "beware of floods signs" don't always get out there in time...just assume the whole road is well dare I say pretty bloody wet....

Mister Tee on snow shoes said: We were almost at the Cattle grid after lunch when we said stuff it , the weather is toxic!!.
weather can get atrocious crossing over Ruined Castle from Basalt Columns Corner till u make cattle grid(there after it is well sheltered) have come over there with two balaclavas on my head a couple of times and u can only hold out for like half an hour as u get hypothermic quickly in the wind chill...also its more than complex in white out even when u know snow pole line well and may be 30meters from it(lost in a total void)
that's why Team Bears always piles in the wood to Pretty Valley Hut...once I was so stuffed on getting in there after coming in from Howmans up Block 24 Rd that I could barely strike matches with my hands as I shivered inside the hut..

skis are faster so u get out of wind chill quicker and down from Cattle grid faster....

this crossing from "White Out Corner" alias Basalt Columns Cnr...can be a bitch that's why I bought a second balaclava just for it...

pulling pin in bad weather is a worthy decision sometimes...just shows respect for weather conditions....well done... "

Yes, there is always next time . I might try coming up Block 24 road next time . That would keep the ski season parking costs down too.

Hear that over in the Ovens Valley the situation is bad. Some Myrtleford homeowners have been asked to evacuate due to the river in flood

Wish I knew that you were on 'my turf' Sunday....would have been nice to get some turns in together. I had work duties for most of the day but Mr7yo Dude with Tude (who as most days was in tow for the day) and I got a few free runs in together during the middle of the day.

The doctor will kick me out of the hospital in a couple of days once the pain is under control. Taking off the bandage over the knee tomorrow (where he knocked in the steel pin).

Now for all of the out of pocket expenses :(

I used to park at Howmans Gap Resort in old days in their carpark...I would ask them if it would be ok to park for the weekend..and just park however they said ..they were very friendly and obliging....just tell them u are off up Block 24 x/c sorry snow shoeing with pack heading for Pretty Valley...also tell them u r friends of the dude that stocks P.Valley with firewood each year...coming this way u stay out of weather but a bit of a climb then u look for pole line on the right that goes steeply uphill(a well poled line) it hits the Pretty Valley Road then it turns and u follow it...then u see the split in pole line:one goes to Mt Mackay Saddle the other at anangle of like 30deg goes to Pretty Valley to the west (right/uphill) side of roadway.....as u cruise along(very exposed up there) u see resort boundary markers(sometimes rope between them) on the left of track (running parallel to track)...then before the highest part u leave this resort boundary pole line....it changes direction and heads down into Ruined Castle Bottom Station....some plastic temporary poles are seen on the next section as road hits highest pt and descends towards cattle grid...

this temporary pole line is more than difficult to follow in white out...few poles too far apart...

sometimes its better to follow permanent pole line above road/right on highest part of ridge coming from the junction of the split and stay on it as poles are better spaced and u can see next one...very exposed but u don't have to take bearing/check gps or do any navigation ...just plod/ski thro white out and gale force winds till u hit the cattle grid...

it all looks different in white out and it is totally disorientating even when u know the place backwards..

the other route from SunValley past the bottom of Ruined Castle Tow is also a good way to keep out of white out and gale force winds...it can be groomed and comes in close to cattle grid.....comes right up gully into this area.. it is good that u have found the shelter ...cos when weather is really bad(and u met it on a really bad day) the shelter is a good place to hide even spend a night...knowing where it is will be an advantage for future trips up there as a fall back... the trick is to take the definite pole line on the right as u emerge into the void at the upper end of Block24 Rd then u have a definite reference point and stay on poles...weather is so bad there at times u have not got ability to look at maps and play with navigational instruments...just get over and out of it quickly...don't stop just move quickly out of windchill...

Thanks Steve. Your experience and knowledge of the Vic. Alps is considerable and very much appreciated. My friends still want to buy you a beer for all the good things you do as volunteer .You are right , in a white out with driving rain/ice/ wind it is disorientating and the weather up high near the Ruined castle can be dangerously bad.

some things I just learnt the hard way ...but Ruined Castle can be a bit desperate sometimes...I used to look around to try to remember the skitows..some old with towers etc...but its more than confusing in bad conditions...maps pole lines navagational systems all get too much in bad conditions...u need to have the geographical experience of what the pole lines look like and the other little features of ski tows/shelters/signs cattle grids and appreciate the time u are out and about before u make shelter...its ok when u travel solo but when u have parties of different ability/fitness it would get tricky...
U R clocking up the kms which impresses Team Bears....

Is the BHP Road up Falls Creek or least as Far as Bogong Village or Howman's gap open yet ? There looks like enough snow up there to make a 15 & 16 th October w/end BC snow shoe trip worthwhile!.

Thanks - love my personal emoji :)

I was released from hospital today and back on the way to good health.

Thanks for all the good wishes from all on the forum, ski patrol, everyone at FC Medical Centre, Mt Beauty Hospital and the SAN.

I won't be on both feet for a while and longer for the bike but I will be around.

Yeah!!!!! 3 weeks post op. Out of plaster. Another 3 months before I can drive or put full weight on my leg.

Cleared to start in the pool to get some movement back in my foot/ankle.

    10 weeks post-op update.

Walking around with one crutch now, at least 50% load bearing. I am allowed to carry a cup of coffee, do the dishes and rejoin civilised society.

I can fully load-bear on my leg and without either crutch I limp around in circles.

The Orthopedic Specialist threw the alphabet at me yesterday - he used the C-word, D-word & most importantly the E-B word which was most exciting (car, drive and Exercise Bike) - sounds like I will be at the gym and pool over Christmas.

    Great news.
Being able to drive simplifies life so much and being able to exercise makes you feel that you are well on the road back

I've had a few afternoons in the local pool doing laps and now the exercise bike as well.

Gees, fitness has dropped right off.

When I had a " cyclist( me) vs. Car driven by an idiot " accident in 2013 I broke my wrist and ribs. It took me months to get back to the swim/cycle/ pack carry hike fitness that I usually enjoy.

Still in recovery mode ATM. Have postponed my usual 2 week school holidays trip until spring (I should know better).

I fell off my pushie back in March so I'm still nursing a broken collar bone. Just giving it extra time to heal.

If we go by the title it is the Falls 2017 thread...

We left yesterday and right now Summit and Maze were not open

Sharing a lift pass with your wife probably doesn't comply with the lift co terms and conditions...

Hopefully by the time you get there some more terrain will be open

Sorry it's still a bit early for me...while this is a Falls thread, looks like it is 2016

There is a 2017 version somewhere
