Just checked the temps - a shade under 9 deg C. vs 23 at home.
That is what I thought regarding a possible end of season XC ski at FC: That by lunch time at Falls Creek, the surface would be so soft and slow you would be barely moving.
Anyone know which lodges etc are open this weekend and next week? Most will be closed but I guess Nelse and one or two others will be about.
Snow today was not bad . A bit slow by afternoon but could have been worse.
Surprising considering the minimum temperature was 3.5 deg c but it appeared to have frozen !!!
Could this have been the affect of evaporation + wind + low humidity ?
Otherwise amazing cover for October.
You could try Attunga - still able to ski down the end of the street onto Last Hoot on Saturday past.
Qt, Alpine View, Bogong Village is about it. Most others closed up last week or are closing Sunday. Interesting in that the Spring/Summer season has never really taken off because it has never been adequately pushed. Self fulfilling really on the part of the lodge operators. They actually need to put effort in to build the seasonal trade but they never really have. That they can get by on marginal winter trading just tells you how much gouging goes on. Kudos to the few that try but unfortunate that the opportunity goes begging.
Village was jam packed last summer period, plenty of cyclists, hikers and general sightseers.
Mogul lodge was full
Anyone been out too makay today/yesterday? Looking to go sat, fingers crossed for the forecasted freeze Friday night
Camped and skied out that way last couple of days.... what's your question?
Haha! Good point. Just wondering how the cover is holding up out there and for the skin home....
Shitloads of snow..... we (me and my 8yo) skinned home in the rain but plenty of snow for down and up. Cover is thick and low.
I skied out to McKay on Tuesday and the cover is still fantastic. Only a few rocks showing on main face but otherwise heaps of snow . Skied back on lower track to Falls and there was complete cover, normally very patchy in September.
Mtbiking is taking off at Falls. They finally pulled their finger out and the result is great .
Nice rocky, flowy stuff ideal for shuttling . Its not skiing but its way cheaper= free.
Gonna drive up for a late season farewell tomorrow.
Doing exactly the same - see you out there!
Crazy doing a day trip but I've still got a couple of days left on my pass, so I thought what the hell.
25th day on the snow for the season - 9 BC, 14 downhill - but so bloody unfit! Hero Pass!
Got the tent setup at 1:30am but was well worth the effort
Premierships and skiing..........good week.
Where did you pitch your tent?
What a great day to finish the lifted season.
Arrived at around 230am yesterday and straight to bed. Up for around first lifts. Straight over to summit where attempted to go to international but a somewhat freeze overnight made it unpleasant. Over to a groomed Scott's and towers which was fun and completely ours for a few hours. Lunch and then spent the afternoon at various lifts around summit. A lot of fun with heaps of natural features.
Dropped into the maze quickly, heaps of snow in the upper area, just as long as you take yeti out as any lower was impassable.
As for snow, I can't believe how much there is. I tried to dig to ground in areas around summit and couldn't manage. Was quite sticky however, I rode the entire day on my bag leg.
Bout 800m from McKay
Seen one cross country skier and Steve lee doing his side country thing, snow and coverage where really fun
The end of the Black route is where the tent was, is that still inbounds?
At 12 at night I wasn’t to worried
You'd have to be in the green (ANP) to be out of the resort.
Had a great last day of downhill with the almost 16 yr old boy at Falls on Saturday- first time I’ve consistently had him wait for the ‘old man’ at the lifts. Got to lift those pre-season fitness levels, Actually, it’s just that he's got to be bloody good.
Skied most of the mountain - even managed to pop over the Rocky Knolls to look for a Hestra glove I dropped on the way back from the Tawonga huts - no luck!
Just paid the deposit on the 2018 Hero Pass - even though I want to see more of Nelse and also ski the Fainters and Bogong next year. Ripper resort season. More BC to come this seaon.
Just did the same.
@Slalom Obviously that day trip on Saturday was worth it! I got 15 downhill days on my pass this year, so definitely got ahead.
My last 4 years had been Perisher so it was nice to come back to Vic this season, albeit only 5 days on snow.
Looking forward now to maximising the pass between Hoth/Falls. I figure 8 days will break me even but hope to get in many more. Might get to cross paths.
I onlly skied Falls, especially because I use my Falls resort pass to access the back-country - got in 10 days so far this year. However, ending up in Hotham after doing a Falls-Hotham day crossing reminded me of how much fantastic terrain - lifted & unlifted Hotham has.
I’ve got 2 boys- 10 & 15 who are now happily self-sufficient across the whole mountain, so while the greater volume of accesible terrain initially kept me at Falls, I’m now more likely to ski Hotham equally. See you out there @Slalom.
Nice day today .
Lazy powers that be havent cleared the road much towards Ruin castle= Gate down that way.
Snuck thru gap next to the silly gate around the bottom of the lifts.
Couple of runs on McKay plenty of cover.
Pretty good a few suncups.
