The fire was Jan '03 and those trees are growing back. I did not think I would see it in my lifetime but there is significant regeneration. That is a bit different from killing trees to make things better for skiing. Those trees do not come back.

The transformation in the last 4 - 5 years seems quite significant to me. There was a long while after it happened when I to didn't think they would return anytime soon.

taking the piss if that's the only lift they're spinning with the amount of snow that's fallen.

Normally towers (main st) would be ready before wombats. Possibly related to grooming and ski patrol setting up wombats first. I'm expecting that towers at least would open some time on the weekend unless weather is truly dreadful. Otherwise it's very cynical treatment of season pass holders

Conditions are mental at the moment. The place is covered. It only stopped snowing briefly today and light flakes are continuing to fall now.
I am stoked to see such an amazing start to the season. There is no one around. The runs are pretty much empty.

Yesterday was pretty quiet. Today a bit busier. It was mostly staff and season pass holders, I think.

With your BC edged skis you don’t need the ski trails groomed. They’re marked closed until groomed.

Enjoy the freedom of the BC - you’re not limited by trails... edged skis with a patterned base combined with kicker skins give you the freedom of the Bogong High plains - limited only by your navigational capacity and your mastery of the elements - be careful out there.

    - FC staff can only groom so much and opening up the resort more generally is a more critical use of their limited manpower.

FC staff are generally exceptionally accomodating of the XC community and work very closely with them.

The advantage of the groomed BC trails is that they are patrolled, so that adds a margin of safety....

I have enough BC experience on snow shoes to stay safe but thanks for the comments. I can navigate with a map and compass in a white out. I have done it before and I will do it again. I don't have kicker skins but I can short hop and herringbone. I will consider acquiring kicker skins as I progress.

you shouldn't need kicker skins for xc touring on the BHP (assuming pattern bases). if you planning on hiking for downhill turns then they will be useful, avoid a lot of herringbone

FC ski patrol frequently make an end of day sweep at high season, but one shouldn’t assume it always happens.

At Mt.Stirling The Clear Hills Trail , The River spur etc. are NOT Patrolled. As long as you report back to ski patrol by 5pm I can't see what could go horribly wrong out on those routes. I have snow shoed them either solo or just with one less experienced friend. I am still here to tell the tale.

@currawong in the interests of general safety maybe you could shed some light - how frequently do you reckon the Nordic bowl XC trails see a patroller?

I’m relatively sure ski patrol do an end of day sweep of the closer XC trails - maybe not all the way to Pretty Valley or all along Heathy Spur, but definitely closer in.

I’ve been at Camping at Watchbed Creek and have seen ski patrol just after dark.

No, unless things have changed in the past couple of years. Would only be on they Nordic trails at end of day if a missing person or specific injury is notified.

Good reception on most of BHP until you get the other side of Nelse/ Spion Kopje/ Mt Mc Kay or down into the valleys. Best practice to carry a PLB if you’re traveling solo.

sorry, i only dabble in xc so not very knowledgable.

@Hully is definitely better informed on this , as is avid xc-er @BilbyBill .

there may be staff out on the tracks, including the groomer, who may find you if you are in difficulty but not a scheduled sweep as far as i know

I have never seen a patroller on the xc trails. They may get involved with the SES and Police in the event of an evacuation of an injured person, or on a search, but not as a routine sweep or patrol.

Thx @BilbyBill, that clarifies matters - my misapprehension. Grooming staff sometimes further out and resort staff in the Nordic bowl from time to time then as far as it goes.

That is something I have found to be very difficult. I can always see the compass, mostly can see the map (before it blows away) but cannot see any landmarks to fix a position. Well done. Knowing where you are is the first step to working out how to get where you want to go. It doesn't take much to put you off coarse and not having landmarks visible makes everything so much harder. The only other limitations would be skiing ability but BHP BC is pretty good.

    it's not 77cm.
Lots of snow blowing around in the southerly yesterday but most of it not falling from the sky. add to that the higher density meaning it wouldn't have accumulated as much. Still be some deep stashes though, reckon the Y's would be pretty deep being lee to the southerly win and tree lined to catch more snow.

you can see the change in density of the snow on Cedarwood and in some of the other cams around the village.

Often happens, I think that snow sits on the gauge frozen for a few days of snow then melts and is measured as precipitation over a short period.
