That was my first thought but It wasn't a big jump though, at least not when I looked at it and it was up to 55ml. It was just incremental through the 24hr period, all be it large increments.

    today or yesterday?
Looks tracked and wind blasted today on some of the cams. Especially Sun Valley*

    *not that it's open yet.

Saturday and yesterday. Yesterday was pretty tracked out in the obvious places.

Yeah right. I was referring to today as not being deep with the exception of a few spots.

I think there is enough snow to make a day trip from Myrtleford and a XC ski at Falls Creek/ BHP worthwhile on Monday June 25th.

Very tempting indeed. Moreover I predict there will be a mild top up of snow this coming weekend so that Monday June 25th will be the day for a XC ski around the lake and possibly out to Wallace's hut and back if my legs can do it!

I know what you mean now. A trip up to Mt. Wills yesterday and the snow was deep in places but really wet. Found lots of holes and the poles just go straight through it. It was not good snow for turns and pretty slow. Cover and depth is not everything. If it can stick around for another week it will offer a good base.

I concur. Yesterday at Lake Mtn. it was sloppy and slow. My poles sank into the surface, my skis sank into the surface which made skiing harder work than it should be. By next Monday June 25th the surface should have settled down to make XC skiing less taxing and more fun at most locations esp. at Falls Creek .

Not sure what specifics you’re after but I noticed from some footage on insta that the cat trails out towards McKay are groomed.

I will XC ski out to The Park and back to Windy Corner on Monday. I suspect the BHP to The Park route via Heathy spur could be slow going . I will see what happens but the Watchbed Creek to The Park route is groomed so that will make skiing out that way easier.

I was up there today. From what I could see from a quick excustion from the groomed track, that the snow is quite crusty and unconsolidated under the crust.

A handful of photos from today.
Got in around 1pm. Up Gully to Summit then traversed over towards Cloud 9 and pretty much lapped Drovers & Towers to blow the cobwebs out. Roadside snow from before 1st chain bay at around 10km from village. Snow quality on mountain pretty good (June skiing is a bonus). Speaking to guy in Easy Eats, said they need one more good dump to get Inter rolling along. So quiet up here so get up if you can.

Both lifts ended up rolling around 1-30-2.00pm
The hordes went en masse and it was nice and quick.
A couple of shots from the car park and looking down to the village from around Cabbage Patch.

Completed my first turns for the year over the weekend. Conditions were great, beautiful weather & nice snow. No crowds & the only delay getting onto a lift was when Drovers broke down for 5 minutes.. Overall a perfect weekend. Apart from the wrath of a pregnant wife when i showed her some photos.

Trip Report . Falls Creek. XC skiing from Windy corner to Watch bed Creek trail head and back in a day .25.6.18.
Yesterday I skied out to Watch bed Creek trail head in perfect sunshine, with a clear sky ,no clouds nor a whisper of wind anywhere. The surface was rather icy but softened after lunch to become very firm but more skiable. I ate my lunch in perfect silence and sunshine at Watch bed Creek trail head .

I went alright on the way out but on the way back I was feeling a little fatigued and I skied down the Nordic bowl from the Aqua duct trail , picked up speed and went over in my only crash of the day .I landed on the left bum brake and wrenched my ankle a bit:confused:. I dusted myself off and skied some more at the Nordic bowl to rehearse what I should have done right and then gingerly skied back to Windy corner.
. Fatigue leads to falls:eek: both when bushwalking and when XC skiing.
Monday was rather quiet out there along the lake. It was almost frozen over. That is unusual for June.I saw a lad on a fat bike on the BHP road ski trail on my way back. I didn't expect to see that!.
I also saw totally fresh newbies trying to XC ski without any coaching , no sunglasses or waterproof jackets. The poor boys were really struggling and their ill equipped and clueless father was responsible.
I felt like an old XC ski hand ( Mr. Newbie on XC skis himself =Moi) looking at that scene at the Nordic Bowl.
There were some Hoppet type skaters out training for the Hoppet race. Ski patrollers seem to visit areas past the dam wall. The snow/ice cover on the dam wall is very good.
The icy surface stripped all the wax off my skis, whereas on snow or softer surfaces the wax stays put.
My legs were cooked after XC skiing 10 kms in a day.:ski:
I went out like a light at bedtime at about 9 pm last night .
I really like the NNN BC manual bindings I have on my skis. They are so easy to use.
It is time for a swim and steam room session to iron out the soreness in my left shoulder and left ankle and my XC ski legs.
    I shall attach photos soon.

Have some lessons. Assuming you, as a bushwalker, are reasonably fit the only reason that you would get tired after 10 km is a seriously crap technique.

I have had some lessons and I plan to get some more. That was the seventh time I have ever skied!!.
XC skiing uses different muscles to the other activities that I enjoy.
I have been taught how to Classic XC ski . That includes all the basics : the piece of pizza/pie mode of stepping in skis ; side stepping on icy /steep slopes; short hops up hills ;herringbone ascent ; snow plough stopping/ speed control; using the ski edges to do a traverse ;snow plough turns = where you look is where you go ; kick forward and glide , swing your arms like a pendulum ,poles low and loose by the side, the motion is in the legs and balance, glide and then engage the next ski heel and toe ; getting up off the snow one knee at a time , getting down low by bending the knees before falling on your bum break ; lining the skis up across the slope when getting up after falling over etc. etc. .
I was not totally exhausted .The days are quite short in terms of daylight and XC ski fitness is different to cycling , hiking , lap swimming and surfing. I swim, hike, cycle, I am learning to surf and now have taken up XC skiing .
So I can say I am reasonably fit. Most people become wobbly and crash now and then . I think that is normal.
Of course if you are a perfect being who never started as a learner skier but progressed beyond perfection prior to ever seeing a pair of skis then you would not want to read about the adventures of a fallible unit such as I.

The 7th time. I thought you were an expert!!!!

10 km should be a jaunt before lunch. A big day can be 30 km or more. You are doing something wrong.

Heading up the BHP road from Windy Corner. The last time I tried to XC ski ( any kind of ski ) this area was on my first ever attempt to ski at all back in 2016.I had a lesson but did not do so well that day. Some people might know that I have some experience in the back country in white season with snow shoes and that I am still a newbie at skiing . So in good weather I think I did O.K. on XC Skis. I returned to overcome and improve upon that which was a somewhat daunting experience in 2016.

The ski surface heading out to the dam wall was very icy and more like groomed ice than snow. I stopped to take lots of pictures and enjoy the scenery. This was at approximately 10 am on 25.6.18.

I have snow shoed over the Dam wall many times in many different types of weather, often with a heavy pack on my back but this was my first attempt at skiing over it. So far so good.

My skis on my day out around the Lake. Rocky Valley Dam was almost frozen over.

A sunny and quiet day at Rocky valley dam . The ski route showed quite a bit of usage from the weekend and it was easier to ski on in places off the groomed surface.
