My skis and poles started to sag in the sun as the surface softened while I filled up my stomach with quite a nice lunch.

Skiing on the ungroomed surface alongside the route , next to the BHP road was often more pleasant. It had a crust on it but was more forgiving. These are my fresh tracks.

I think Mr T, your exercise regime is ideally suited to skiing and possibly don't take what Legs has said too hard. From my own personal experience I would say inexperience and gravity would be the more likely reason you fell (that and the crud snow) and you should not have been too fatigued walking out and back on relatively flat ground. I would consider what Legs has said though if you were in fact fatigued. Could be a technique thing. The other thing to consider is your setup and what you intend to evolve to as a skier. If all you are going to do is groomed tracks then get a set of skinny XC skies. They will get you most places on BHP or Stirling. What you have (and I have also) are BC skis which are pretty good and they can turn. You may lack a bit of power in the turn with your bindings but you should be OK on open country and slight to moderate hills. Obviously the more experienced you are the better you can control this but as a novice you will find it harder with this set up. I really feel you would benefit more by getting away from these flat groomed tracks and finding an area where you can practise speed control and turning i.e. somewhere where there is a hill (or hills of various incline). The other option is to get some XC skis just for these occasions. You can pick them up pretty cheap second hand and they will track better for you.

Thanks for your remarks. I like the BC XC skis that I am using.I figured that the Madshus Epoch BC XC skis are suitable for many uses so having tried them at Charlotte's Pass last year I went and bought them. I have used skinny skis and they were harder to balance on but were easier to Herringbone in. I shall do as you suggest and get off track and try some more speed control and turning. That is necessary.

How's Falls skiing at the moment ? Thinking very seriously about doing the Hotham / Falls Creek double from Canberra very soon, particularly how the snow fallen so far this season.

Sun Valley open. Snowing and cold but not too windy.

Some inexperienced drivers did struggle - some international students with wheels in a ditch on the way down, another younger driver in a minor accident on the way up - within 1km of the village.

It was slow going downhill- besides people pulling off to remove chains very few pulled aside to let others pass - obviously no-one considers themselves a 'slow' driver...

The skiing today was GREAT storm skiing. Not deep but stashes to be found all day.
Re the road....conservative chain regulations and advising AWD to fit chains will make no difference to lack of ability or stupid. As I have been saying to visitors for years...."people fall off dry straight roads". Drive smart, easy on all the pedals and drive to your ability.

This is largely because our overall driving level is very low.

We have set fairly low standards set for gaining our licence and still struggle. Imagine if our cities and lowlands experienced snow regularly - imagine the carnage!!

Of course it's not helped by the (not infrequent) narcissistic character type found skiing - the I'm first, best, fastest, yarda... Combine with challenging and vis, and a lack of road patrol (signs sure but how many resort officers patrolling?) looking for conga lines of trouble/stacks and add a dash of unsuitable/unroadweather tyres and we have a rather dangerous mix.

...(& don't get me started on road with lanes equal to a coach width in some sections!)

Yes, there's this, there's unconscious incompetence, and there's very few (or no?) formal turnouts on the way down. There's chain bays or gravel patches.

I would go a step further and tell people to drive below their ability. Hold something back. Most people over estimate their ability anyway.

Anyway, on piste was good this morning despite the wind, sleet and cloud.
Off piste was variable, from deep and soft to ice.
There was a couple of lifties poking about International load station.

Vic Roads in Benalla may be worth a call. I used to have the right contact there but he has moved upward. Not sure if I have his replacement. I had a chat with VicRoads a while back about putting slow vehicle turnouts on some roads with a warning side so people get ready but I was not specific about doing it on the up and down. There may be a reason why they cannot put more on the downhill side. Perhaps some fear people pulling over may just keep going off the edge. No idea really but if you can find the right person to talk to then you may get an answer or you may even get some for the way down next year. My point was made just after a woman was killed because she had nowhere to pull over for the car behind which was harassing her and could not overtake on the narrow, bendy road. Citing incidents which may have been prevented is always better than the hypothetical. If you think about giving it a go, let me know and I will fire up the old laptop (hopefully it will not crash again) and see if I can find some sort of direct contact for you. No guarantee.

formal turnouts are good but the informal ones are fine too. really no excuse not to use them. or just indicate and slow down on a straight bit

    Yes, it ought to be.

Going onto mud or gravel is a deterrent for some.
Some don't know the width of their vehicle and stick with lane markings.

The easier and clearer turning out is the more chance of it becoming catching.

Concur w Ziggy today at Falls not bad on piste but obviously warming up late am which lead to the dreaded freeze at 3pm +.
It will be concrete skiing tomorrow until sun gets on it.
Some off piste OK shallow , hard to believe the reported 17 cm but definitely not powder . 6/10

Yeah. Well, there was rain on Friday. Good for the BC in my opinion to help consolidate the snow, but on piste it's producing white concrete.
Summit hasn't been groomed, pissing off some regulars, and Inter and Lakeside are coming. Be grateful for what you're given.
