I enjoyed it when I was there last in 2017, but I also had to take a realistic approach to getting around the village with a 3.5 year old, and getting him to and from lessons/snow school each day.

We also had a less than welcoming experience from our accommodation provider, so we were looking at either self contained or catered. In the end the accom we have booked in Smiggin Holes came in around 10% cheaper than the option we were considering at Falls. Coupled with the feet dragging on the Coffee Club, and it made the decision much easier.

Hopefully in the next few years I will be able to get up to Falls again, especially if the little one takes to the snow.

We have action! It looks like there's a bit of dynamic pricing going on, but if you have the Falls Creek android app and go to the "buy online" option, you can select tickets for purchase by date and duration.

For all tickets, they have split them up into a low/mid/high demand structure. These are all of June and the last two weeks of Sept for Low; midweek in July (outside school holidays) & August, and the first two weeks of September for Mid; and all weekends in July & August, plus the July school holidays for High.

Prices by day for Low/Mid/High tickets:
    2 days: $181/$220/$236
    3 days: $258/$314/$336
    4 of 6 days: $339/$411/$441
    5 of 7 days: $414/$502$538
    6 of 8 days: $482/$585$627
    7 of 9 days: $545/$662/$709

No pricing on a full day lift ticket as yet, *but* they are offering a "First timers" lift pass, as a one day pass with limited lift access and a 2 hour 20 minute lesson for $137. This could be an indication of the "walk-up" lift pricing

I've got an xc friend who has no doubt gone up there to start his season

The tradies will be spitting chips. Early snow does not help get projects get finished

Village bowl cams probably tell a more accurate story. Grass showing through on bottom of summit and a gun going near base of eagle express, giving better cover

Do you mean between MtB and Falls? Drove up today..... fitting chains at Howman's but that has become standard practice now as soon as there is any snow on the road anywhere between Howman's and Windy Corner. Road is easy drive in Subie without chains, though probably a bit more snow than in season because of lower traffic load. I can't see them bothering to open the BHP Rd beyond Falls until after the season now.

Thanks @Hully - yes just going up to the village. Should be picking up an AWD but if conditions persist I will grab some chains (just in case).

    Who's open in Mt Beauty?

Rocky Valley are open all year so should be able to do chains. Probably worth double checking that they will be open that day. Not sure about the petrol stations these days. AFAIK other ski shops not yet open.

I am looking at driving up to Myrtleford this Sat. and taking a look at Cresta valley at Mt. Buffalo in the XC rock hoppers and XC skiing at Falls this Sunday as a day trip from Myrtleford. I have an AWD car and my own chains and there is enough snow at Falls to XC ski for free. What could be wrong with this Plan?

    Hi Currawong.

Do you get a sense that the green season maintenance & construction starts too late in the mountains and then has to ramp up to unrealistic levels in late Autumn?
    Under the no snow assumption?
Just a thought? Happens at all hills.

BHP still not showing closed but I can't see them keeping it open today if this persists. I think this image is an old one that referred to the planned burn last month. Not showing up now. We are getting snow at 800m on the eastern side of Falls but not consistent. Too warm. It is still a couple of weeks out from the start so whatever falls on the road could be gone in a day or so after the snow stops so the road by rights has to open. Drove to Albury on Monday with about 4 inches on the road over Mt. Wills but all gone Tuesday lunch. It always annoys me when the RMB shuts the road and there is no snow on it. They have no right or more importantly, no authority to shut the road at all.
The Caltex at Tawonga Sth is all ready to go for chain hire. Not sure if it has winter diesel yet. Friend told me no so we grabbed some in Albury.

Thanks for that. I just refreshed the page and zoomed in. There it is. Still would not count on it staying closed for the season. I have seen this before 2 weeks out but it will have to clear naturally with rain or sun. The road is still a lot warmer than the ground so it will melt faster. I am not calling it either way just yet but if there is no snow on it then there is no reason for it to be closed. Councils get lazy and do not want to send crews up to check it and clear fallen trees. Will either be up there tomorrow or at Wills. A few of the new Mittagundi crew have never skied before and in a month they will be skiing with a full pack so a good dump now gives them a bit of a head start. I don't think the snow will be deep enough at Trapyard just yet.

the really good slalom carpark cam was removed yearsw ago. the cam at gebi's usually includes an angle on gully carpark. not all cams are displayed on all sites. i think the fullest range is at https://www.skifalls.com.au/discover-falls-creek/conditions/snow-cams. clearly some shots are not current. there is a shot of inter bttom. cross your fingers that they add more angles later

I don't think that they really assume no snow, but maybe hope that. there are a few factors that come to mind
    • some big projects just struggle to fit in the Oct-early June window, especially if there is a lot of bad weather over summer or unexpected delays
    • some of the builders and tradies take some or all of October off if they have worked on the mountain over winter
    • sometimes there is still too much snow to get projects started straight after the season
    • and the big one: property/lodge owners often wait till they have some income for the year before starting projects

They don't usually, it is typically just Buller and Perisher who get into a we're the first to open competition. Falls, Hotham and Thredbo tend to open to planned schedule when they have snow.

I would be very very surprised if they open early. I can't recall Falls doing early opening since 2000 and can't see why they would now. Buller is so much closer to Melbourne that it works for them. For Falls it is just a PITA. Vail obviously are not interested in free lifts for early opening at Perisher, so would not expect it at Falls. Let Buller cope with the challenges of early opening while Falls just gets on with being ready for QBW

Falls builds a lot of marketing events and pizzaz around opening weekend and an early open would dilute that.

Lots of people are happy to make a day trip to Buller to fight for space on a couple of lifts and risk nothing much else being open or staffed. The extra distance to falls goes with higher expectations.

Last year when falls lift co extended the season, most businesses were shut, including the medical centre.

I will be at Windy Corner this Sunday June 2nd at about 9.30 am. I will ski out past the dam wall possibly out to the Park and down the paralyser and back to Windy Corner …... or just out to Watch bed Creek and back .
I need to work my XC ski skills and ski fitness back up to scratch after a long summer off the planks..
If anyone wants some XC ski company out that way this Sunday then please PM me.

It is always free to use XC trails..... if you are referring to Resort Entry fees, they do not apply until the Saturday of the opening weekend, 8th June.

    Note, Sunday is 2nd June.

Don’t begrudge the resort entry fee - pays for everything from the Windy Corner facilities, to the snow clearing, to the environmental care of the resort footprint, to ski patrol, to grooming X-country trails - stuff BC skiers use even not if in resort.

OK, arguing about price and access to national park snow footprint is another matter, but this is NOT the time or place....

I think the resort entry paying for Ski Patrol is a bit over stated because it is a 'feel good operation'.....the Lift Company makes a 'Ski Patrol contribution' of nearly $425K which is obviously funded from Lift Pass sales. It would be interesting to know the annual cost of Ski Patrol operations and understand exactly what proportion of the $4.4 million collected in resort entry fees actually funds Ski Patrol operations. Note: these numbers are from the FCRMB Annual Report.

    Agreed!

    I’m conflicted - 50/50 inbounds/BC out of Falls.

As I use Windy Corner & the public shelters a lot I do feel OK with resort entry, but do admittedly feel gouged somewhat - sprung for the season pass.

If I could access the non-marginal skiable back country easily without paying a resort fee I undoubtedly would.

Resort Entry (parking) fees are a valid and widely used revenue stream for many local governments. The focus of alpine area users (stakeholders) needs to be on cost of service delivery, cost of a huge bureaucratic management structure and who should be delivering the service. Eg if Lift Company are making such a large contribution to Ski Patrol and are responsible for all other ski area winter activities, surely it would be more appropriate and efficient (cheaper) for them to be running Ski Patrol as they do at most resorts in the world.

I understand that it costs $ to keep the road open, employ a ski patrol team , pay people to operate the Windy Corner Café and maintain the WC there etc. and so forth however with this heavy pre season resort opening snow fall , the thrifty side of me simply wishes to XC ski without the parking /entry fee..... just for once.

based on your experience and knowledge, do you think FCSL could do it more efficiently (ie no loss in safety but less cost?) not talking about other aspects of FCRM, just patrol

I assume that patrolling the toboggan slope and helping with back country could be worked out if there was a change. another advantage might be that slope behaviour could be better policed whereas now I get the impression that patrol don't really have authority to pull tickets. not a huge problem in practice

The operation of Windy Corner Cafe is a commercial operation currently managed by the YMCA.
