This is an interesting point. The Alpine Resort Management Regulation 6 provides
The Board of an alpine resort may, by instrument,
declare any period in any year specified in the
declaration, to be the snow season for that alpine
    resort.

Now we know that last year the season was extended and the regs give the board power to declare the snow season but it has to be by instrument which is more than just them saying so as such a declaration must be legally binding for the boards to charge fees and issue fines. What would constitute a legal instrument for the board to declare or change the season? Notice in the government gazette possibly. Does anyone know? Do the boards know?

I did see on a thread in the weather forum that someone suggested Falls was opening early so I can see why Mr. T has posed the question. On reading that I went to the Falls website and FB page and nothing had been mentioned so I considered it just rumour. I know these pages provide great information but sometimes it is easier just to go to the source. If Falls were opening early then the RMB would not be keeping it a secret. Some people just get into a flap. I noticed the question had been asked and answered several times.

    01 June - 1st day of winter.

Bumped into @Rick Ross Da Boss at Windy Corner.

Quite a few people about. Village pretty busy.

We skied up Wombats and down Drovers, back up to the hill and then down to the lake, trying out new skis for Arthur (12).

A sunny, clear day, with softening cover in the afternoon.

    Looking good.

    Chaos as usual!

It’s part of our Australian Culture!
    Nobody knows anything?

Toboganning cars in the Carpark !Now that’s something to be proud of?
What next....will we find the helicopter has drifted off the pad too?

Sounds like some more earth works maybe required to make things horizontal !
    The knowledge nation on steroids?

Several rescues already and it ain’t even the QBWeekend?

Done that, but it was at Lake Tahune in Tassie. I stayed in the water for a few minutes and ended up with hypothermia. :goose:

Boxing Day c.2005? We started a hike in warm muddy conditions. Went to bed covered in mud and sweat and feeling very grubby. The next day was a bit cooler, but just as muddy.

The third day we went higher and it started snowing fairly heavily. It became apparent it had been snowing for some time up there. Got to Tahune Hut about 3.00 and the weather was too crap to head to the summit, so we called it a day. But I was still feeling grotty and grubby, so I snuck through light snow down to the lake and had a swim to wash myself. After a minute it no longer felt painfully cold, so I swam around a bit. When I got to the shore I put on clean dry clothes, but on the 100 metre walk back to the hut in the snow, I started shaking uncontrollably.

Contrary to what they tell you, I knew exactly what was happening, so I walked to my bunk and tried to get into my sleeping bag while grabbing some sugary lollies for quick calories, hoping that no one would notice how dumb I'd been. But there was a G.P. also staying there and she recognised my hypothermia and alerted people to it. But it wasn't too bad, all three groups staying in the hut looked after me and treated me like royalty that night. But I'm still embarrassed about how dumb the young me was. o_O

Nice xc ski to watched in sunshine. Road cleared to nordic bowl, skied along side gutter. Bit thin at eastern end of dam wall. Snow surface has been tracked, ready for new snow flakes. Tracked past Watchbed. Firm in morning off track up high apparently. Great start to the season.

I spotted that on their store the other day. It got me wondering about combining a first timer pass with that one for maximum days. Either that or one of the Snow Monkey trips to Hotham with accommodation etc included (The same pass is offered there)

Hotham has had midweek magic before.. not seen it at FC before.

We will combine that with a beginner passage and entry either side...

    Email from Falls:

Given the current snow accumulation and forecast, Falls Creek Resort Management requests the immediate removal of all wheeled vehicles from the village.

Access arrangements will be assessed once the storm front has passed and a determination made if roads will be cleared or if oversnow will begin operation. This decision will not be made until 8am tomorrow morning (4 June).

Please ensure you are parked outside the village in a manner which does not impact snow clearing operations.

Many thanks for your ongoing co-operation, hopefully we can move to ski-in/ski out for opening weekend.

Apart from the Cedarwood cam, why do the Falls cams regularly show multiple versions of the same view from supposedly different cameras? e.g Village Bowl 1/2/3 are the same and Slalom Plaza 1/2 also???

Sometimes the different Village Bowl cameras have a view of the Summit or across towards where the Village T-bar used to be (can't remember what that run is called)

Probably a dumb question, but what is Pete’s Train? Is it a new lift or just one of Boardwalk or Mouse Trap carpets renamed?

I think it’s the short carpet in the enclosed snow school area right next to Cloud 9.

It’s listed separately to Boardwalk, Monkey Bar and Mouse Trap.

Thanks, so if you disregard the 3 access chairlifts, a green lift and a blue lift are all that will be open. :(
But I guess Queens Birthday weekend is more about partying than skiing.

BTW Falls Creek has had a greater diversity of ski lift makers ( 12 ) than all other Australian resorts combined, So if someone is near that micro carpet, could they take a glance to see which company made it. There may be a 13th brand of lift at Falls.

While what you say is correct, I tend to agree with the marketing hype from Falls (cut from their email today), given that we are barely into June:

In 2000 - our best recorded season prior to this year - we opened with 5 lifts.

As well, for the first time in Falls Creek's recorded history, the village will be ski-in, ski-out from the first day of the season.

Pretty sure summit was open in 2000. It certainly was on the free weekend before qbw.
In other words there may have been less lifts but there was more skiing

Online day ticket prices have been published. $97 till the end of June (and again in late Sept). max listed price is $142 for school holidays and fri-sun in july & aug. Other days showing $132. I think there is a premium for walk- up sales. Also not sure if prices can increase closer to the day.

The $142 tickets are shown as a discount of 5%, putting the walkup price at $150. This seems to be in line with the price at Hotham (naturally) and Thredbo.

Summit was definately running the weekend before Queens Birthday. (and very little else) One of the biggest yet happiest queue I have every seen. By comparison, the offering this weekend is disappointing.

Good pick up. Victorian cams are overall pretty ho hum these days - maybe I'm just blaze'?

Context (sorry this is more than just Falls but relevant I believe):
Perish & Threddy are big resorts - but they have heaps of cams and lots of different angles from different parts of the resort: high, low, mid, diff knolls or peaks. Even 1 or two aimed at the BC. Plus live cams.

Frankly the big 3 in Vic had more cams and more variety 10 years ago. Nothwithstanding the funky 360
Cams at Falls/Hotham, they seem to be aiming at bang-for-Buck. It's understandable but NSW showing them up. Maybe Vail ownership will help the latter two??

just had a quick look at your ski lift directory. It says about Big Dipper
IIRC it never ran after Ruined was converted to a chair. The chair replaced both lifts.

Ta. I'll amend the entry to say that 1994 was likely Big Dippers last year.

Nearly 500 ski lifts have operated in Australia and it's hard to track down accurate details for them all, so thanks for the more accurate information.

If anyone has further corrections to the list of Falls Creek lifts or extra info, it will be appreciated.

Pretty quick response from Falls to my query about their webcams. I filled in the form on their website asking about the duplicated images and got this response in less than 20 mins:

Thank you for the feedback we will look into this.

The difference in each should be a different angle from the same camera but some back of house settings might need tweaking.

    Nice work Falls
