I thought it was one of the trains on the Island of Sodor. Pete is a nasty piece of work.

Email from Falls:

Based on the current forecast and general road condition, Falls Creek Resort Management wishes to advise all stakeholders we will be moving towards wheeled vehicle access in the village based on the following arrangements:

1. Once the majority of ATS return transport has been completed tomorrow 10th June(approx 1230pm), snow clearing machinery will be entering the village to ensure all areas are made safe for vehicle access. ATS will continue to provide services to guests during this transition period.
2. Clearing will begin in the upper areas of the village and move downwards.
3. At approx 6pm tomorrow (10th June) the village will be opened to wheeled vehicles. This will be Red Pass only and 30min access for guests. We will advise further once this has occurred.
4. Freight operations will be managed by the freight terminal at all times for the remainder of the season and no village access is permitted to vehicles delivering goods.
5. Special Access Passes can be issued to address mobility requirements and emergency works at premises - please contact the FCRM admin office.

Please use extreme caution in the village area while machinery is in operation.

REMINDER: Irrespective of future road conditions, access to the village will be closed to all guest vehicles from 8am Thursday 27th June 2019 and all transfers will be via the ATS at this point in time.

2 enjoyable days at FC Saturday, Sunday - foggy, low viz. light winds and not really cold.

Main Street, Highway, Drovers, Last Hoot, Village Run, Wombats up and running.

Eagle Chair, Halleys, Drovers and Towers chairs all running.

Mixed snow conditions- icy grooming with unconsolidated sludge or cut up choss in patches.

Saturday a.m. was reasonably busy. Day car-park full both days and Windy Corner almost full too.

New cafeteria outfit at bottom of Towers, Cloud 9 and Last Hoot restaurants also up and running.

Windy Corner cafe’ very busy - lots of day trippers, and the XC enthusiasts in situ.

Some pleasant runs nonetheless. Good to stretch those ski-legs. Nice relaxed vibe. Pretty busy for an Opening Weekend. Some moments of r**n today.

Some groomed runs were getting tracked out - patches of brown on Last Hoot etc.

No real XC grooming yet - small groomer packed down main trails.

XC at Windy Corner offering tele lessons this season.

Police were monitoring speed as one came into the resort today- and were doing roadside breath-testing just out of the resort on the way down Sunday pm.

An observation - lots of folk on 85mm plus skis - width is in.

Makes me think, rentals probably now mainly offering wider, softer, shorter skis - however the overseas norm may not always be optimal for more marginal icy Oz conditions- especially for beginners unused to getting wider skis on edge.

Did you have to pick up your hero pass or did they send it? And did you get the hero pack with free ticket and rental voucher thingy?
Cheers

If you have a current Snow Pass it should load directly to it, just head to the lift and start skiing. If you don't already had a Snow Pass they are saying to head to ticket box and receive a complimentary card. I think I saw somewhere in comms from the Lift Co that they aren't sending out Hero Pass packs. I think benefits are available using the Snow Pass without vouchers.

I got that from an email they sent.....

".... Our focus is to get you on the snow to enjoy the EPIC conditions as soon as possible. Please use your existing Snow Pass card which has been automatically updated with your Hero Pass lift access and benefits for Opening Weekend. This allows you to go directly to the lifts and enjoy your first turns of the season.

If you don’t have your Snow Pass card please visit the Hotham or Falls Creek Ticket Offices to receive a complimentary new card.

If you are a Hero Pass holder but haven’t had the chance to convert to the Epic Australia Pass and are visiting Perisher this weekend, please head to the Perisher ticket office to convert your pass. "

The Nordic ski centre at Windy Corner have posted an up date on FB today.
"Sorry skiers we will be closed for the weekend and until the next snow storm. "
Now does that mean that the complex is locked up totally ....can you take shelter there or use toilets etc.etc.Team Bears like those hot showers !!

Oh useful info...I never new about that.

Team Bears buy stuff from Super Market ocassionally on summer work trips....so a hot shower diwn there would be good sometimes!

Querulous Towers I like that!

So do all the mountain bikers shoot over there and use the place in summer for a free hot shower?

Falls Ck village is still a bit of a mystery to Team Bears!
But we have been known to seek out power points to charge up our cordless drill batteries from in the Resort Management Building across the roadway!

There's plenty of good walking - as long as you can avoid trying to stay on top of unconsolidated snow.

I go hiking in summer across the Bogong High Plains. It is a great place to hike. I love the BC XC skiing across the same terrain but lackaday the season for snow is very much evading us. I am already thinking about how much a quick trip to Japan to XC ski in early Feb. 2020 might cost....

It is what it is. We are japan skiers due to the long school break in international schools. This one was booked as a aligning of some stars and a why not give Australia a go. So first week of July is all we have.

That said this is all tongue in cheek. There will be something skiable by then and a week not at work in the mountains is better than not.

Will pack the hiking boots just in case.

When was the big dump last year? Something like June 26.
Last year the lifted season opened the first Friday after the long weekend with 80cm of awesome fresh dry snow and didn't look back from there.
The hype leading up to the opening weekend has paled to just that..... marketing hype.

Think its 18cm due this week, and depending on what forecast you look at maybe 50cm the week after.

Not holding my breath though, last season was a late start which just stayed steady looking at the charts (I was there most weekends) the first good dump was 80cm but no base, my rock hopper got a few scratches off that ha

I'm booked to stay end of July so hoping its filled up by then (fingers crossed for a meter+) Alternatively I will just be drinking a lot of beer

Holding off for 50cm of base before I head up next, but at least I already have my trip to Hakuba sorted for Feb

Last season was not a late start.... lift operations started the Friday directly after the long weekend with 80cm of awesome fresh dry snow. That's an earlier start than average in my book. Great thing is that we didn't look back from there.
Normal season to me is struggle with snowmaking to get Towers, Wombat's and maybe Drovers open for first week school holidays, limp through the 2 busiest weeks of the season and then after the kids go back to school the real skiing starts mid-July.
This season is going to suffer for the next few weeks from the greatest start to the season in the history of mankind type marketing hype associated with having a few lifts spinning for opening weekend.... and the let down as the reality of a normal ski season hits.

Any decent snow in the second week of the school holidays is a bonus. My adage every season is....."if I ski in June it's a bonus, it's good to have decent skiing in July, if I don't have good skiing in August it's a disaster".
I buy that. Also, there’s nothing like a ‘normal’ snow year.
