Any snow is better than no snow. Or the forbidden precipitation that must not be named.

It is still looking like a rather non XC skiable outlook at present until Thursday next week at least ! :-( . When the Nordic ski centre reopens ,[ who can guess when that might be ?! ], then we shall revisit Falls Creek.

Yeah not much will change out of snowmaking for at least 2 weeks or more

We were spoilt last year and by the early snow this season

In term of snow base (using Hotham charts) we are just below average, on the 27 year history for base depth

That shot's given me itchy feet.

The skis have been tuned. The tuning gear has been tuned. More tuning gear has been bought.

The skiing on the piste today was much better than the hyped up offering on the opening weekend. Accept that there was a bit of natural available on opening weekend but what is on Mainstreet, Drovers and Wombats at the moment is more complete and better quality.
In regards to the bowl snowmaking discussion..... they haven't started making snow on Ruined Castle and Scott's yet, they offer great manmade skiing terrain as 2006 proved. I love skiing the Summit but Sun Valley needs to be fully covered before anything in the Bowl beyond Broadway delivers value.
With regards to Wombats at capacity, beyond the second week of July school holidays and a handful of Saturdays nothing in the Falls Creek lifted ski area is at capacity. Also, nothing in the Bowl is going to relieve demand on Wombat's Ramble.
As of now they have made enough in the lower bowl to offer tobogganing there this weekend.

Nice and cold at night so the snow guns have repaired lots of damage from a week ago. Fun weekend and not that busy.

It would be nice it could be opened as getting back to the bowl area will be horrendous for the next couple of weeks with the upcoming school holidays

The “Village Bowl 3” shot above has a bit of cover on the track

Hopefully snow expected over the next week will change things.

However, should current conditions persist, especially during holidays, AND Wombats /plaza area becomes overly dangerous/overcrowded, then I'd suggest Vail should look at beefing up their snowmaking along Broadway and lower bowl/cam3/Eagle load areas. If not for ski enjoyment & marketing then for OHS standards.

If as mentioned above that they haven't even started making snow on Scots and Ruined then Falls creek definitely need a capacity increase. After the great snowmaking over the last week and a half Towers, Drover and wombats aren't really very inspiring for anyone above a low intermediate.

I'm lucky enough to be a member of a lodge that has lodges at Falls Creek and Thredbo but I rarely book Falls Creek in advance, snowmaking on one Summit run plus more snowmaking on Scots and Ruined would take make Falls much more appealing.

A message from the Windy Corner Nordic ski centre on FB.
    "
Dear Falls Creek XC Skiers. With ski field operations increasingly active in early morning preparations, it has been determined that there is too much of a risk to safety and product to allow XC access via Wombats Ramble.

Falls Creek's XC trails have therefore been closed until natural snow conditions improve access. We ask that all are respectful of this decision and ensure that the strong support of XC Skiing by FCSL is offered the utmost respect in abiding this request.

Falls was lovely yesterday and today - Main Street in particular holding up well.

Glad to be on my narrower long old K2’s a great ski for more marginal conditions.

Good snowmaking on Drover’s dream, Wombats & Main Street, though Highway is patchy in the middle.

Lots of people about - more than expected.

Having skied Perisher on Monday and hearing about Hotham’s increased snowmaking capacity - Falls definitely has the least snowmaking capacity in Vail’s AUS stable.

Met the new Swedish XC instructor as I gave him a lift down to Howmans - I assured him we’ll get some snow soon.

However, I reckon we’ll need at least 45cm for the main XC trails to become skiable - can’t see that before the end of next week.

I was also struck by the contrast of how little snow there is on the BHP, Feathertop and Bogong compared to the Main Range!

A bit sad for school holidays but it is still June - I try not to rely on June for skiing - it's the 'bonus' month, even for the big resorts.

Falls seems a bit caught in a time-warp ski wise - I think many cant /wont see the limitations from existing snowmaking system - it was once probably the most extensive in Aussie. It's still fairly decent but most of the SM runs are nice mellow greenly-blues on the back side. They're all nice, great for littlies, newbies and improving but most better skiers get beyond and even harder Scotts and RC are pretty samey and shortish after half a dozen runs.

But if the the front side had a couple more options, like say the zipper/Chainsaw & summit, I honestly think more advanced skiers would take a punt and book Falls for a change.

But for now, you could book a week and never ski anything harder than Scotts or Towers. That's more weekend territory tops in my book. And Zi might do it soon to give the lad (10) some variety.

But let's hope Vail can look beyond, the Fuzzy, friendly family face of Falls and invest in the harder areas of the mountain (we all love!!).

    Soon???

If you want a black run holiday in oz you you would only book for August no matter the resort. There’s no money in advanced skiers imo.

If the school holidays experience poor snow conditions with limited terrain open, then maybe the new Vail overlords will observe the various aspects of Falls that are placed under stress during these times - eg queuing for the lifts, queuing for shuttle buses etc and invest $$$ to improve some things

    Maybe...

for a few years now the policy has been to get a good cover (70cm IIRC) on wombats, towers, drovers and mousetrap first then get serious about ruined and scotts. they really want scotts and ruined open for school hols but before that is just not a priority.
not saying I necessarily agree, but that's the way it is

I can understand why they want 70cm on Drovers, towers and Wombats. Just think they need to up the capacity so they can start on Ruined and Scots earlier to guarantee a School holiday opening. Doesn't look like they will be open for the start of the Holidays this weekend.

Quite true overall, July bookings in Vic (bigs) are always a bit risky and unfortunately, school hols are early July. But I suspect most people with school kids book early, then suck it and see.

But for opportunistic skiers through the season, the lack of open harder blues as well as black round must hurt Falls.

The lift co. Forgets that better skiers often determine where the car load 'improving' skiers head. Beginner /lower-interm skiers don't always get to choose.

They gloss over this point - and neglect the missed visitation. (At their own peril)

if they have decent snow making conditions then i think they can get ruined and scotts open by the first week of vic gov school hols. it's much easier to cover smooth mild slopes than more interesting ones. If they don't get enough good nights then ruined and scotts will be late. meanwhile they will have made towers bomb proof

It means the beginner 10 year old in out family learns to ski on Hotham’s greens and easy blues rather than Falls’ more extensive selection of same. Doesn't mean he’s forced down Mar’s Slide!

Sun Valley is showing 30cm average depth on the Falls App. How much is usually needed to open up runs?

That may be in snowmaking area. Not sure.
Probably need closer to 50 for Scottys which is needed for access to ruined castle. They have been known to run shuttle 4wds to ruined in school hols if there is enough for ruined but not scotts.
Lakeside needs a fair bit to make the poma track, and there is no snowmaking there. . Lift co never seems in a hurry to get it open

It all depends upon what lies underneath. If it is native grasses (eg Highway or Numbnuts Scramble) the cover can be quite thin however when you get around the back around South Face/Boomerang/Rocky Knolls you need to cover the heath. The weight of the snow causes it to pack down but you still have a fair bit of green tips poking through the cover with more than 1/2 meter of snow elsewhere on the mountain.

Good intel. We are currently on the bus heading towards falls. Be there about 1pm. Time will tell whether they get any more open but looks like the overnight stuff has freshened up the existing manmade stuff pretty well.

the biggest problem is having to share limited runs with lessons. best thing is to get on the slopes for first lifts. take a break when it gets busy. try again when lessons finish. they have been known to open lifts early in school hols when few runs are skiable. If so, take advantage. one week I only skied before 9:30 LOL My tolerance for crowded slopes is pretty low

    LOL

    Lessons congregate in certain areas.

When it’s busy the left top part of Main Street with a cross-over into Highway is a nice option, as is the race course.

The extreme right or left of Drovers similarly provides a nice line.

Ironically, very early on Wombats can also be reasonably quiet and allow for a nice quick run or two.

Early lunch and then skiing through lunch when it’s quieter...

I can’t afford the helicopter so ski across from Falls to Hotham instead.

Like everyone- waiting for that snow to fall....

@Sadie at the moment this thread is functioning both as conversation AND trip reports, observations and conditions.

Probably no surprise given the Vail transition and the associated changes.

    @currawong, @Hully, @Scott No Mates @Ziggy @BillyKidd @snowgum @rowdyflat -

Maybe we can get the mods to move some of the posts over Falls Creek Convo.

Then we can retain the customary focus of this thread to trip reports, observations, conditions, and have the Vail, snowmaking etcetera discussion over in FC convo.

    https://www.ski.com.au/xf/threads/falls-creek-news-and-chat.69056/page-10

Visitors and newer members may find it easier to manage this way.

I plead guilty to posting non-topical content and also don’t intend any offence to anyone....

    @Chaeron when I get a chance, I’ll clean it up :)

Please keep this thread for reports, pics and conditions. All other banter to to go into the “News and Chat” thread.

    Thanks :)
