24th July last season. What is going on in 2020??
July 30th 2019
Paul's Loop XC trail.
The Plague does not stop from snow falling. That is to do with weather patterns that are blocking big snow falls taking place in the Australian Alps. It is true that the plague has coincided with a paucity of skiable snow.
July was icy and not great to XC ski on at Falls Ck/ BHP in 2019 , but as my photo from July 30th shows there was snow/ ice to ski on (albeit melting a bit) until the big four day snow storm arrived in August 2019.
As I said before, just deal with it. Some years are good, some years are bad.
When I was working in California a few years we only had a 3 metre base.
The locals called in bad, but it was dream snow.
You can't control the weather.
Just live with it.
Where in California? Mammoth? or Tahoe? or...
Sierra at Tahoe ski resort, ski instructing, on an H2B visa. Worked there for years.
Close to Heavenly, Kirkwood and Squaw Valley.
Thanks. Would like to visit/ski in that part of the world one day. Looks spectacular.
I used to stay in small town called Meyers, just down the road, with a bunch of Americans.
Great tree skiing at Sierra at Tahoe.
It's awesome snow compared to Australia, powder everywhere, then it turns into Sierra cement in Spring.
Only 1991 was sparser than this at this stage.
A local remembers skiing started in mid-August that year.
There's very good cover on Panorama and Main St and on Hway 83 too judging by the top half. Though this morning a cold southerly kept them crunchy - too treacherous for my first outing this season on fats.
There were 3 EYTers up there.
EYT = earn your turns
Current carpark view
From Milch's socials
There's quite a few overnight parks on the road filled. I was seeing walkers and tobogganers.
And on the PV road yesterday there was a school group with packs, about half a dozen rec skaters and about the same number of athletes.
Spion Kopje just looks SAD.
The crew keeping the dream alive
Put the shorts on already
Got a November vibe going on
It’ll b Pond skim next weekend, unless winter pulls its finger out
Kite surf the lake is on the to do list
BOM are predicting snow falling..... :-0
Ms. Bunn is drinking from the same cup too....
This day in 2019.
XC skiing out along Paul's loop heading for the junction with the Paralyser.
My daughter called the season Snowvid-19.
Windy Cnr was humming this morning - 6 cars.
I skied and walked PV Rd, McKay Rd and McKay loop.
Skis off twice to get to the intersection at the foot of the climb up the mountain. That section up the mountainside is now patchy and not worth trying on skis.
Ruined Castle lift was turning - for maintenance at a guess - and Drovers was getting some work on Wednesday.
Fainter right, The Horn left
On this day in 2012 - Timm Spur on the left, Bogong on the right; taken from near Ropers Hut.
I remember it was really cold; the Camelbak nozzle froze, my fingers lost feeling, my nose ran and froze in my 'stache.
It looks like late October :-0
That’s a beautiful pic Ziggy - a Bad to look too under lockdown.
Having camped at Watchbed CK and Edmondson Hut in the past, I’ve never skied quite as far the Top of Timms Spur. It sure seems to offer good views of Bogong and some decent tele practice slopes?
Bloody auto Speller! A bit ‘sad’ to see!
Yes, it does.
It's also a good summer walk or ride to continue to the river and saddle and follow the track to the BHP road. Needs a car shuffle, luck in hitching or the Mt Beauty taxi to get back to your car at the start.
Will have to try this one day - cheers Ziggy.
With one or two sets of the bushie gang to shuffle, this would be a nice ‘new’ walk with older kids and farming out the younger/lazy whinging ones (as if!).
Perhaps camp near Ropers mid trip? I slept in the old hut back in 86’ but it would be good to see the new model.
Yeah, it's pretty swish.
In fact if you get the heater going it can get too hot in a snow bag.
It's about half a day in on skis.
Camping at the river is also very nice.
Hotham and Falls Creek aren't re-opening this season and passes will be refunded.
Lifts or resorts?
Falls Creek Will Not Reopen for Spring Skiing and Snowboarding
4 August, 2020 - Vail Resorts today announced it will not reopen its lift operations at Falls Creek for Spring skiing and snowboarding following the Victorian Government’s introduction of Stage 4 restrictions for Melbourne and Stage 3 restrictions for regional Victoria, which will be in place for six weeks. This announcement follows the Company’s decision on 9 July to suspend operations until at least 19 August, in line with the re-introduction of Stage 3 restrictions for greater Melbourne and the closure of the NSW border.
“We made the decision to close Hotham and Falls Creek in early July to support the government’s efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19 and to prioritize the health of our employees, guests and community. It was certainly a difficult decision, which unfortunately has been reinforced by the worsening COVID-19 trends and the declaration of a State of Disaster in Victoria until 13 September,” said Pete Brulisauer, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Vail Resorts Australia. “We are disappointed to mark the end of the season this way and extend our gratitude to our teams and the businesses in the local community who all worked incredibly hard to open this winter. We also want to thank our loyal guests for their patience and understanding; we look forward to welcoming them back to our resorts for the 2021 season.”
Perisher will remain open and is unaffected by this decision, operating in accordance with COVID-19 restrictions in NSW.
Guests who retained their 2020 Epic Australia Pass planning to ski and board late season at Hotham and Falls Creek, may apply for a refund under Epic Coverage by emailing email@example.com.
Just popped up in my Facebook memory feed
FC is officially closed now to anyone not already living there for the duration of stage 3.
xc grooming is finished for the season
Further to this announcement, Falls Creek Resort Management (FCRM) have now been advised by the Victorian Government that National Parks and the Alpine Resorts within are to close for the duration of the stage 3 ‘Stay at Home’ restrictions for regional Victoria. This closure begun at 11.59pm last night.(sorry for multiple posts but needs to be in a few places)
The Falls Creek Table o meter.
SDS + FOMO= :-0
I 'm going to do that trip next season in August. I will take my sleddy thing and set up a snow camp at Roper's hut.
Two lucky soles earning their runs
Two soles = one person? Or two people with one leg each?
Soul music to my ears (and eyes).
the snow cams show groomer tracks around the place, wonder why?
Yes! I've been wondering that!
Cause it’s nice to skin up on
What a miserable day up there and we're locked out of the state.
You’re locked out, we’re locked in... either way no snowballs for us!
Yeah it looks super awful. About 15cm of awful I'm guessing.
Looks like a bit more than that on the Cedarwood balcony :/
