I'd never stay in Jindy again now

Has to be on mountain and Falls ticks all the boxes for us.

Great apartments at an acceptable price for Aus standards

Falls creek needs to take a lesson from Mt Buller.

Not one person was hanging around any off ramps at lifts.

A comment from a Qld'er that doesn't get to Falls as much as i'd like.

There's a lot of posts in this thread about driver behaviour up and down the hill, with slower drivers not pulling over. As a very infrequent user of the Mt.Beauty - Falls Rd, I would say the road signage to alert drivers of chain bays, slip lanes and other pull off areas is pathetic. Signs need to be several hundred metres before the facility, not 20 - 40m.
In addition to this, chain bays on the way down from what I recall, were hardly longer than 1 car length, which does not allow for a reactive pull over/stop to allow faster cars through.
Put lack of local road knowledge, poor signage, fog and other hazards into the mix, and the non familiar driver will be going a lot slower than those that do it regularly. Throw in young kids and nervous partners in the car offering advice and......... well you get the picture.

I don't know who is responsible for Installation of signage along the road, but things could be a lot better, even if no one is behind wanting to overtake.

I think the Slow Vehicle Turnout signs should be rewritten Expert Driver Turnout.
Might get more using them ;)

Not sure if you've driven the road this winter.... the signs for all the 'slow vehicle' pullouts and lanes give a 300mt and even 1km ahead notice.

Also doesn't mean that 'slow drivers', tourists and locals alike, don't frustratingly completely ignore the signs and pullouts.
I've posted this before but I think that the works done and increased signage have had little effect, those pulling over were anyway.

But now it's easier for them to do so. There are more obvious spots and many more that don't require you to drive in the mud.

Changing driver behaviour is a slow process. Some of these signs are new I believe, so it could take a while for it to sink in. Also some people just have trouble absorbing signs (reason why many school zones have flashing lights). Possibly too much focus on just getting around corners and watching out for ice. Many drivers will only drive to the front of their bonnet anyway. By that I mean they do not look ahead very far so the sign is past them before they get a chance to read it. These drivers are easy to pick in cities with traffic lights. They are the ones who do not brake until almost at the red light. I understand exactly how frustrating it can be for locals or experienced drivers but @Beerman makes a good point. Some people may drive slow on the bends so the kids don't get sick.

Yes the falls road is one of the pukiest around. Its the constant grade and consistent bends and lack of horizon i guess

Last visit was 2015. OK, signage is changing for the good then, but if the bays are only 1 car length long, that gives no confidence to drivers to use them, if others are on their tail.

some much longer bays and earlier signs.

but even before it wasn't very hard to look for pull over opportunities. on a longish straight bit you can just slow and indicate even if there isn't room to pull over.

Agreed but the education thing will take some time. There will always be someone who thinks they should control the speed of every other car by driving ridiculously slow. When you give them a polite lean on the horn they may even go slower. Maybe they will pull up for a coffee or fuel in Mt. Beauty and you can give them some verbal education, politely of course. Showing anger only gets you in trouble. This side of the mountain is so much quieter in winter. I am not sure I could handle the stress of driving up and down that road.

don't disagree. i just wish we could change behaviour. most falls creek regulars promptly pull over for anyone who looks like they want to go faster.

Agree it is just a courtesy.
The FC road has the same issue as multi-lane roads, some drivers sit in the right lane and dont give a fig about those who are traveling faster

Got up this morning, turned on data on the Android phone and got a notification: lifts have been put on hold and will be on hold for the rest of the day.
One: the right term here is the mountain is being SHUT DOWN, not put on hold.
Two: without a time stamp, the only reason I knew this DID NOT APPLY TO TODAY is that I'd been watching conditions yesterday.
Is it beyond the wit of the IT people employed by resort management to design an app with notifications that are timely and relevant?

I did get that notification yesterday. If you had data turned off since before it was sent then it was probably queued. A better design would cancel expired notifications. Timestamping would be a compromise.

This.....I don't get out much I know, but I can eat and drink outside in most places I visit without being confronted by the smell of smoke. However, at Falls Creek it is rife. I point out to people they are not allowed to be smoking in outdoor eating areas a number of times every week.

Don't get me started on outdoor smoking. I think the rule only changed last year, I was shocked when we were in Melb and smoking areas were still prevalent (due to come info force In July 17 iirc). Our kids detest smoking at the best of times, this went beyond esp in a city like Melb.

Bouquets to everyone here so far

    Multiple lifties
    Carpark driver

    Snowclub stuff

Can't fault Falls to be honest. The ATS transfer was perfect as we arrived 430pm on a Sunday..

Bouquet to resort management for agreeing to transfer my season entry pass to my new car within 24 hours of making the request. Of course, the $30 "admin fee" took away some of the joy, but at least parking is taken care of for the rest of the year

Brickbats as no one was in attendance when we tried to pay to go thru the Entrance station on Thursday. Apparently the woman was powdering her nose.
Then when we asked at windy corner they wanted us to come back down to Howmann;s, we couldnt be trusted to pay on the way down.
Thankfully a compromise was reached and management kindly came to us in the carpark.

Bouquets go to resort management for a phone call around 11am to tell us our vehicle had slipped over the edge at slalom day car park .

Bouquets to parking staff for chocking vehicles cars about to go over the edge.

Bouquets to parking staff for looking out for all vehicles going over the edge.

Bouquets to parking staff for winching us back onto solid ground

Brickbat to huey for the icy carpark, cars in the resort were slipping left right and centre

    No damage.
Apparently we were one of 6 cars that went over.
Many vehicles were getting close to the edge.
Parking attendants used everything from chains to bottle jacks as wheel chocks to try to stop cars going further. Excellent job they were doing.

@rowdyflat that chock was pointless when we arrived as that wheel was actually off the ground. Not sure when it was put there.

We received a message then a phone call around 11.30am and immediately made our way to the car.

The amount of cars in the carpark that had slipped, I saw over 20 cars

I wonder if this may result in those concrete bollard things few inches high at some supermarket car parks installed in the future. Especially at the outer rim of slalom day carpark

Can see in these pictures cars were close to going over. Chains used as chocks on one car.
Mid carpark can see how far other vehicles have slid sideways or back in their bay.

    strange conditions
