The quality and quantity of snow cover has been epic this season. One example is cover down to and across Rocky Valley Ck.

Winder Corner shelter has a snow curtain at the rear ...

Heathy Spur loop is in fine shape:

R**n is forecast for today so cross fingers.

    Local sales ...

Windy Corner XC is selling some track and BC gear, prob ex rental or demo but don't let that put you off.

Everest Sports in Bright has end-of-season discounts on some BC gear inc NNN-BC and NTN (Crispi) boots among other things.

Snow Trek and Travel in Wodonga also has eos discounts, eg 20% off Scarpa boots. I got a pair of TX Pro there the other day and got very good advice and fitting service from Pete Cranage.

Rhythm in Cooma is a bit further afield and also has a range of discounted gear.

I expected the snow to be smashed after yesterday's rain but it wasn't bad at all.

Skied down a shallow frozen bubble wrap slope and the vibration was so bad it popped both releases.

Picked a BC bowl and the line down was crust that held up with a bit of speed. Walking out the other side the crust broke, the surface didn't offer enough grip to walk on skis, it was too soft to bootpack so I side-stepped out o_O

The Heathy Spur Loop looks well tempting. Would you recommend BC XC skis or Classic XC skinny skis for it?.
I will be at Falls Creek on Tuesday.

If skiing the loop, the lighter xc skis would be the go.

If the cover is firm something like the Eons - 62mm underfoot - is plenty. If it's a slushy spring arvo, or you want to be able to short or long cut, a bit wider helps.

    2 totally conflicting responses!!
Skinnys should be fine on groomed areas

As an aside @Mister Tee on XC Skis I had 2 skiers yesterday in the early stage of moving from snowshoeing at Buffalo to XC skis. After yesterday, they said they may not even go back to snowshoes. Friends of yours?

Depends on your definition of skinnies.

I have skied on Skinnies 2/3 trips to Falls/ BHP this season , so far , on the groomed surfaces. The skinny skis were fine and very comfy and easy to ski on. They are equipped with NNN BC bindings and are responsive to my feet and ankle driven motions in terms of turning and stopping. I will ski the XC BC skis at Mt. Buffalo tomorrow afternoon, a last Hurrah for The Buff on planks in 2018.
TECKEL :The two converts from snow shoes may or may not have been the G man and the R man , who came with me on the JB Hut ski trip.
My MSR snow shoes have been in the repair shop since early -mid July. There is a replacement part that is seemingly difficult to obtain.
Evidently this white season I have not had any cause to miss my snow shoes at all.
    :)

anything with a NNN-BC binding is highly unlikely to be skinny in xc terms. Groomed tracks are designed for skaters and very skinny classic skis. Of course NNN-BC skis can be used on groomed tracks too. Many can even fit in the classic tracks too.

I ran the EONs with NNN-BC* and 62mm underfoot is skinny in my book. Go off track in fresh or unconsolidated snow and they sink in.

They slotted nicely into the set tracks.

    * Pete Cranage's choice, not mine.

I suspect the G man and the R man are not total converts to planks the way I am. Without lessons and practising , the diagonal stride doesn't come naturally and it is energy efficient when done right.

i was thinking that skinny meant track skis not intended for use off track

These are my Classic XC PB skinny skis equipped with NNN BC bindings that match my boots. Yes,I have two pairs of skis that match one pair of boots.

I'd be very surprised if they are anywhere near the 62mm that @Ziggy is referring to. but they do come within what i would regard as skinny. just unusual to see nnn-bc on them (then again my track skis have nnn-bc too, but probably a little wider than those)

I think I need a pair of skis like that for next season! I looked at the skis on sale at Windy Corner but at $600 plus they were well above my pay grade. I can't believe how light these skis are, must be a joy to ski on them in the right conditions!

Well, to my mind it's the traditional aussie narrow ski designed for distance rather than turns. Punted by chookfooters. At some remove from skaters and lycra and from heavy metal and duckbills.

They are So light and easy to ski on. They make my Madshus Epochs seem cumbersome.

Skied up to McKay this morning. Excellent cover and firm up high. Telemarked most of the way down to Road 24 and then there was some side-slipping and -stepping to make the road. That's a PB :) 220 m of vert.

Trekked out to what the resort calls the Knolls and got a long smooth line of telemarks this morning. Then a run on South Face.
A brisk wind and southerly/easterly aspects kept the snow firm and made for very good skiing.

    Weather resources ...

For weather observations over the previous 3 days and detailed 3 hour forecast:
    http://www.bom.gov.au/places/vic/falls-creek/forecast/detailed/
The observations come from the weather station on the mountain (though the rain gauge has been dead for some time now). The forecast is straight out of the computer I believe.

    BOM daily forecast:
    http://www.bom.gov.au/vic/forecasts/fallscreek.shtml
    Updated twice a day.

    Forecast, observation history and almanac:

    Current visibility (live cams):

Note: the Windy Corner XC people say that when it is cloudy on the mountain it is often clearer out past the dam wall.

    Mt Beauty observations (currently dead):
