I went to Perisher once; it was awful. There were people there from Canberra, horrible people who were wearing matching ski suits and stuff

    Hi there Guys
Been reading between the lines and it's still not clear if Hotham will become EPIC for this winter season... I'm on the sidelines weather to buy epic or not given my time is spent skiing buller and Hotham mostly, can you guys see Hotham getting approved for skiing on epic pass this year ? Or should I sit out this year and see what happens?
Definitely no overseas travel for 2019/2020... so from that angle epic isn't much good to me?
Let me know your thoughts on which way I should go ?

In another thread yesterday, someone reported speaking to Hotham and being told they were hopeful of the sale being finalised by late May. No guarantees though. How long can you delay a decision? I'm not sure of cut off dates but wait till June if you can. Or buy a hero pass if you will ski hotham a fair bit anyway and cross your fingers for perisher

Anybody else received an email asking HeroPass holders to fill in a survey?
Purports to come from Vail.com but the internal links do not work and the email link in the text body comes back as invalid

not so much a decision as the slow turning of the wheels of bureaucracy. needs to go all the way to the governor. will not be the highest priority matter in the queue

You can’t read much into that. Probably all loaded up with share options hence no purchases.

You would normally get a couple of buys if they had some confidence in their own company, Even just token purchases so there wasnt a big fat 0 in the buy column.

Because tax - directors and executives personal interests don’t always align with that of the company, even though, ironically, the point of share options as remuneration is to ensure that they do.

As @Chaeron predicted earlier in this thread, the day pass prices have increased. Up 18% !! for Hotham, $146 for a walkup adult pass, $83 for a child. There is some discussion on the pricing changes at
    https://www.ski.com.au/xf/threads/hotham-2019-trip-reports-pics-conditions.83526/
but I think it's more appropriate to continue it here.

Prices have also jumped highly in the USA for 2019. They get great snow of course but in USD the prices below are very expensive. Makes getting an EPIC or IKON pass essential for anyone thinking of a US trip IMO.

The push to sub-1000 dollar season passes is strong there, and after some net searching, it is no coincidence it is happening here in oz given that Vail is the new owner. As quoted in the Financial Review....
    https://www.afr.com/real-estate/usb...otham-falls-creek-ski-resorts-20190224-h1bn3q
"The acquisition of the leading mountain resorts in Victoria is part of our continued strategy to drive season pass sales and build loyalty with guests from around the world," said Vail Resorts chairman and chief executive Rob Katz.
Top 10 Most Expensive Lift Tickets In The USA [2019]:
    1. Vail/Beaver Creek – $209
    2. Breckenridge — $189
    3. Deer Valley — $180
    4. Steamboat | Aspen | Park City| Mammoth — $179
    5. Copper Mountain | Whistler Blackcomb — $178
    6. Winter Park | Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows | Keystone —$169
    7. Heavenly — $164
    8. Jackson Hole — $162
    9. Northstar — $150
    10. Sun Valley — $149

As a foreign tourist going to any of those resorts there are multitudes of ways to pay well below rack rate gate price on lift passes. Though it’s not great for those that like flexibility to resort hop and just rock up on the day.

I think it is all a bit of a storm in a tea cup. The reality is that very few people “day trip” to Hotham & Falls. If you get organised and buy a multi day offer the price comes down quite significantly. As someone who gets a lot of value out of their season pass both here and overseas I love the lower cost offer

We'll be getting Epic passes next year - they are definitely goof value now - but we'll probably only get up for a week thus year when and if my ankle is recovered enough come September so we haven't bougt season passes. Our pass cost per day for a family of 4 will be high. Or we may just skip oz this year and spend our weak AUD OS in Jan 2020.

While that is true for many U.S. resorts, have you tried to get discounted day tickets for those 10 locations in the last few years? I know it's not possible for Jackson Hole or Deer Valley. I don't ski much in Colorado or Tahoe so don't know about those resorts.

Really encourages new people to take up the sport ! The Epic pass is awesome for everybody on this forum who already ski or board but asking first timers to pay close to $300 per person per day with lift, lesson, rental and access. They will run out of people to sell passes too when theres no one new coming in.

The problem is with the way the weather works in Aus I don’t like to really commit until the day before really. So even if have a weekend locked in at Hotham or Buller don’t really want to lock lift tickets in until couple of days before.

That's how I think about it. Don't want to be locked into skiing a day on an expensive ticket in sleet and wind and no vis. On one weekend years ago my wife and I had 3 shit weather days in a row at Hotham. We went up from Harrietville and hung out until skiers were giving up near lunchtime then we'd use their tickets for a couple of hours skiing until we were too cold and wet to continue in the mist. Definitely not worth buying a ticket ahead of time that weekend. These days we'd stay down and hire mt bikes for the bad days or head home early. Weather forecasting does not seem particularly reliable for the Vic alps and the upper runs are very exposed to winds.

Hotham's management is now risk adverse or cutting costs ....lifts being closed in a sea breeze supposedly on wind hold
Road runner out for a day really stuffs the flow of the mountain

    Yikes!
Risk aversion seems to becoming a pandemic across our ski areas this year. Or the alternative you suggest of cost cutting midweek is a possibility. A friend who lives at Hotham in winter tells me he thinks there is less grooming being done this season in midweek.

Totally agree w Goski . I decide the day before.
Unless you are a beginner there is no point in locking in skiing days ahead.
The weather is changeable and you might commit to shitty snow , poor vis + strong winds .
No thanks go mtbiking or rest.
Safety is the excuse but its really just avoiding costs and ambulance chaser lawyers who should face the guillotine.
