That sucks! Being In my early 50s, I was enjoying the thought of half price & then perhaps free skiing one day before my knees give way.

I guess the lift co.s are smart enough to realise that there's a lot of time rich (& not broke) older skiers out there. Let's just wring them dry a little bit longer? Eh?

It would be great if you could get a gig at Falls, I would sign up for sure as long as you don't mind teaching geriatrics!

Cue Hully for Guest Services job (or has he been there, done that?) As for Dossa5, I see Cam Walker is looking for tour leaders for backcountry w/e at Hotham. I hear he knows the terrain pretty well.

    See you up there -

I’ll probably head up to Mt McKay from Windy Corner from early Saturday morning. On those Madshus Annums and trialling my new dark green/ blue Arcteryx jacket with my orange day pack. Say Hello!

I'm guessing they've closed it to the public, management of this road has become very conservative in the past couple of years.

I'd prefer to say you just may not have seen it.... We ate at Elk and didn't see a bar either..

As it seems they have converted an apartment into a bar. No other info around on it so keen to try it out

Ate there a few times last year and stayed there late in the season and didn’t see any bar and no one mentioned it, so unless this was very poor marketing, I’m guessing it is new

The rumours are well and truly on the money. There will be a cocktail bar aptly named Apartment 3 adjacent to Elk Restaurant open for business this winter. Watch this space!!

Actually I sort of cringe a little when people refer to that list. Some of the mini profiles on lifts like the Inter could be written a lot better and I'm not OCD enough to track down comprehensive info on all of the 460 odd ski lifts listed there. So it's just a rather imperfect list of all Australian ski lifts with a few rough profiles on the more interesting ones.

But I guess I shouldn't be too hard on myself as I don't have the time to make it all that much better. Anyway it's the only comprehensive list of ski lifts of any country in the world and it wouldn't have got nearly 290,000 views if it was really as dodgy as I think it is.

@Hully has called it a day and moved on to other things, still in Falls & Mt Beauty.
a new brewery is opening soon in the same place. don't know much more than that at this stage

Maybe it's just me but it feels like Falls are missing out on some major marketing brownie points by not having some decent snowmaking down in the bowl. (Yes it's pseudo north facing!! Or East/North east in parts) but it's not a good look to have such prominent - and in my opinion, important runs - looking so brown when other parts of Falls and indeed other mountains are cranking up the guns. Sort of looks a bit like they're stuck in the 70s? At least in this area.

All the other four 'bigs' in Aussie have major snowmaking near the main access point - yes I know there's snowmaking on The FCX - but with all the lake and endless water available (and mains power), would it be do hard or expensive to get a the lower bowl covered (used to be from memory) and perhaps a wide strip up the summit.

In fact now that Hotham's HV has fairly extensive, it feels like Falls need(?) /should catch up.

Anyway my 2 cents. And personally, I reckon the 'north facing' excuse is a bunk. All Oz resorts have north facing snowmaking, including Falls on Wombats. It really boils down to the slopes strategic value.
Clearly various FSL owners feel there is no strategic value in offering (solid black) skiing on the summit slope - nor much of the bowl in leaner years or periods? Could this glaring omission change under Vail?

As it is, it's a bit sad - but many here may not agree. (It is a family resort after all!) ( l:- l

They should have built the whole resort on top of Spion Kopje. It has snow from June to October, real snow from the sky.

Maybe but it leaves us some good looking BC. One day I'll ski not just walk. Certainly looks enticing from Falls but a fair old day trip - have to do from Edmondson Hut one Spring day?

they used to make snow in the bowl for the camera, but not summit proper. If they can't make it skiable then I'd prefer the honesty. of course if they still had baby poles they could readily have a skiable slope which could look good too.

serious snowmaking on summit world be even better. as you say, wombats shows that it is viable. family focus or not, more families will come, and keep coming, if there is black skiing too

There is more money to be made from Wombats Ramble. But at least a few showmaking guns to top up the cover on Summit / Village / International would be worthwhile.

Perhaps time to convert Falls Ck into a dedicated Mt Bike Hub...planning for the future when only a few flakes fall over winter.
I don’t think Spion Kopje will ever get down hill rubbish spread over its summit!
That big tract from Spion Kopje to Timms to Fitzgerald’s is best left with minimal disturbance.

It’s very pleasant to come out of Ropers Hut and ski in an almost direct line over a few “bumps”(ridgelines and gullies) to Spion Kopje. Then from the summit one can see “splendid”panorama of the Falls Ck Business Precinct...as one takes in the untouched scenery looking away from the commercial development!
