    Hey All,

    Got some newbie Falls Q's..
I'm headed up to falls Next week for 2 days for some touring (mon and Tues, looks like i've picked some decent days)
I'm staying in a lodge ( cosela) and planning to skin out to Mckay, one or both the days.

Whats the best/fastest way to get to Mckay?
via the aitkens + pretty valley road way?
Or round the back via sun valley? ( this looks further to me)
not planning on buying a lift ticket btw.

Any suggestions for a second day of touring?
I was thinking maybe out towards Nelse and edmunsuns hut?
but that seems like a lot of flat for a 1 or 2 runs, and then a long flat way home.

(i'm splitboarder so it's not ALL about the downhill, it would be nice to have 1 or 2 decent runs)

Suggestions for a good cheapish meal in the village?
Suggestions for best counter meal between the hume and falls?

    Thanks,

Before 8am or thereabouts go up Wombats Ramble to Pretty Valley Road.
Otherwise Aitkens to PV Road is the shortest cos it's the steepest. If it's icy it'll test your skins. If you want more direct follow the skidoo trail up between Aitkens and Wombats.
Another gentler option is up the BHP Rd from Windy Cnr, then right onto PV road.
For a 2nd day's touring consider going offtrack - from Sun Valley looping around the back of Rocky Knobs to the BHP road for return, or a bit further to start the return on the trail beside the Langford West aqueduct to Langford Gap and then the BHP road. Think I've got a GPX file for this if you're interested. Only needed in low vis cos the back of the Knobs is a bit featureless.

Another option for day 2 is to play on what the resort map calls Rocky Knolls.

As you head towards McKay on PV Road you head southerwards instead of west to the mtn (don't know if that leg of the loop has been groomed, assume it is) and when you hit the gate you veer left and upwards to get onto the Knolls. That last bit often has skidoo tracks for those who go out seated with the famous Olympian.
On the east side there's a range of lines, blue or green. Treeless; can be very sweet indeed.
    Added:
On your last run you can stay lowish and follow the gully back to the Sun Valley groomed trail. How low depends on cover. You'll see any snow collapses into the creek and rivulets from higher up.

This is merely my limited experience with the area for XC skiing and / or snow shoe trekking

. There are many others such as @Ziggy , @Boodwah, @Ubi. Steve & @Chaeron who know way more than I do about XC skiing outside of the Falls Creek resort.

The Heathy Spur loop is great . The Heathy Spur Loop route is undulating so it is a great day out.

You can ski out to Edmondson's hut once you reach The Park assuming you are going clockwise coming up from the Damn wall East.
You can follow the temporary pole line . It will be groomed so you won't have to worry about navigation. I tend to go as the crow flies out that way but I have been up there in white season a number of times.
The descent down the Paralyser is a good descending run with some curves so you won't be kicking and gliding the whole way.
It gets groomed quite a bit in season. I skied it last month. It was fine.
Be prepared for very cold and windy conditions up around The Park and Mt. Nelse. Be sure you have a map and compass. Things above the tree line out there can become " interesting" even though there are pole lines to the huts .

I am planning to ski out to Pretty Valley hut and skinning up from Sun Valley and returning via the Mt. McKay road back to Windy Corner. It seems like a good plan so that you are not retracing your ski tracks the whole way .The Summit area at Fall's Creek can be hairy in bad weather .Keep an eye on the weather forecast.
    Have fun and stay safe.

Can't beat the breakfast at Elk till 11.30am, egg and bacon toastie and coffee, tea or chai $14.50

Pretty good feed we had few weeks back was the lamb shank at Falls Creek country club,$6 or $8 for an extra shank if your super hungry, don't judge by the dated looking restaurant, food is actually pretty good and well priced.

I've had few decent counter meals at the star hotel in Bright

Just a goal of visiting Mackay summit can get you into trouble if it is icy.

    The track is regularly groomed.
    Bootpack it if it's icy.
    But it's no fun then.
We've entered the spring style thaw-freeze cycle and it's taking hours for the surface to soften in the morning. We really need this top-up.

Soft new snow on a consolidated icy base.... on slopes above 30% in the back-country there may be avalanche risk.

Indeed. Between about 30 and 45 degrees stay off and away from under.
Put an inclinometer on your smartphone and lay it on your stock.
That said, 30 degrees is pretty steep and I don't normally ski it anyway.

Made the trek for sunrise this morning (McKay)
Sound advice from the guys above but with bigger all humidity last night the run down was very very delicious
Also groomers have laid out the red carpet for the cross country skiers

Every time I get to the McKay road climb I think damn, why didn't I pack the kickers.
    Same today. Doh.
Intended to ski down to Road 24 but it was clear that the gully on the east side needed to be crossed early and I hate all that wasted traversing/side slipping after that, so I tried the north spur. Got down to the track and after that it was going to have to be side-slipping too. It was steep, heavy and treed. The Olympians had chopped it up. So I bootpacked back to the McKay loop.

From the foreground: McKay flank, Frying Pan Spur, Spion Kopje ?, Timms Spur, Bogong ridge.

Yeah I'm hoping the South face of McKay will have decent stability come Mon and Tues.
I have no issues about riding terrain that steep, my biggest complaint is skinning back up!

After a week and a half of fantastic days on firm fast groomers on the tele skis, I decided that a little XC was in order. Being on the skinny track skis with the slipper boots sure feels wonky after resort tele gear. Made it out to watch bed creek and back in about 1.5 hours for the 9km trip, not bad for an unfit old bird and no falls were recorded!

Just over the dam wall showing some style...…

My mate and Rocky Valley Dam in the background.
The skies started looking ominous and a few flurries started so we headed back in for lunch and hot choccy at Windy Corner. Winds were picking up an some big fat flakes were falling and starting to stick as we exited the mountain at about 12:30. Going to be an interesting drive tomorrow and I suspect my chain fitting skills will be tested quite low on the mountain.

    Question
A couple weeks ago I found out hero/epic pass holders can load lift from 8am.

Which lifts exactly? Express, Towers and Drovers? Any others?

Pretty sure it is only weekends at the moment, which probably suits you. I would not be surprised if it stopped in Sept

I thought it was only halleys and towers but can't quickly find anything definitive

    Email yesterday

EARLY LIFT ACCESS FOR SEASON PASS
    HOLDERS

Don't forget, if you possess an Epic Australia Pass or a Hero Pass, you are eligible for advanced lift access at Falls Creek every weekend in August. From 8.00am each Saturday and Sunday, you will be able to load Halley's Comet and Towers Chairlift, giving you first tracks down Main Street and Highway 83. Please note, with all this snow predicted, there may be some delays in getting our lifts up and running. Download the Falls Creek app via the App Store to stay updated with the latest lift status.

The email about the early ride benefit was sent out yesterday, from the Lift Co. You have to subscribe to those emails using its website link. You have to know the secret handshake, have the right skin colour and speak Portuguese.

Fitting chains to all vehicles as of mid-morning? Drove up earlier this morning and though the road was snow covered it was not slippery at all. Have driven the road 5-7 days per week every winter since 2007, never required to fit chains to 4WD/AWD up until 2014. Since 2014 have had 3 All Vehicles Fit times and every time chains required on 2WD now AWD 'advised to fit'. This morning did not see one clearer circulating between Village and snowline on my trip up. What has changed?

Thx. Overkill for AWD & 4X4 if tyres have grip capacity & drivers are careful.

Lowest common denominator risk management at work, ignoring actual conditions.

    Frustrating for experienced, frequent travellers....

One can’t regulate for stupidity though...

Log in, go to my account, select print vouchers, select voucher, print!

However, I have tried to apply the voucher code in checkout when purchasing a lift ticket - that bit doesn’t work.

The management of the Falls Creek road has reached their "jump the shark" moment. They have just communicated at 1645 this afternoon that chains will be fitted to ALL VEHICLES tomorrow. I've got nothing more to say.......

I've driven up and down the Falls Road today, it's snow covered but not at all slippery IMO. The fact that they do not have two road snow clearing vehicles circulating during snow events is clearly noticeable. In past years they would have had "Casper" the Landcruiser lapping the road continuously during any snowfall and the truck out during significant storms. Now they only have one vehicle of this type, yeah it's new and shiny but can only do half the clearing job. Maybe this is the problem?

I just posted a copy of the message from FC in the Trip Reports thread.

For the uninitiated, how do they communicate which chain bay to stop and fit the chains in?

@Marty_McSly - signs on the side of the road telling you to fit chains.

Is Tawonga Gap road closed? Just checked the Vic Roads app and it says it is. Also looks like a bottle neck around Bogong Village.

OK, same as Perisher then, thanks.

Do they also do signs on the down side telling you when it's safe to take the chains off? (Which Perisher don't)

Yeah, Tawonga Gap Road has been closed. Until things change if you're in Bright can't get to Hotham and need to go via Happy Valley Running Creek to Falls and fit chains to all vehicles.
We have a ski industry which functions really well until we get snow!
