Here's a simple question. If the excessive data use was used to access ski.com.au, would it have hit the papers? The only reason it is in the paper because you put the word's "Porn Scandal" in the title and it sells adspace.
In the meantime, his new work colleagues probably have a different opinion of him. His kids are asking him what it all means. His career is probably set back 10 years if not put on ice so the journalist could make $500 for the story and sell another $1,000 in adspace.
Many years ago, I left my computer at work to go to the toilet to come back and find my boss on it, sending emails from my email address. His excuse was he needed to send an urgent email and at that time, the work computers would take 15 minutes to load up in the morning.
I couldn't report it to security because I would have gotten in trouble for not locking my computer (which technically I was supposed to do every time I took my hands of the keyboard) and if I did find anything he would have denied completely (cause he was a %$#k). Luckily he was being legit in this case, although I did keep a file note on the event and contacted the union to register with them just in case.
For this guy; Its inappropriate use of company resources at best and a security issue at worst. He paid his bill share of the bill. Who knows $900 may have been his normal monthly phone bill, which is why Falls paid that and the reason that they did not mention the "legal fees" because it may have been $10 for processing. The state of the "news" nowadays shits me.
