Hope they don't become like some of those in M'ville. Too much money and sympathy turned them into victims rather than survivors. Narby people are survivors - a far better outcome, imo.

Authorities need to spend up big to give these fire prone coastal communities more infrastructure, planning,to ensure survival of the locals come a fire storm from hell day.

Like what is the plan when you have a half an hour window before your community is engulfed in a fire storm.
The threat was clearly there with fuel moisture content, prevailing strong winds and their direction....

It was only one spark that was necessary to create the scenario !

Too much infrastructure is not good. What use is an indoor basketball stadium in a town that doesn't have enough kids to field a basketball team? Then you have the problem of maintenance of facilities. The council has that responsibility, and then find they don't have the ratepayer base to maintain it all, so they have major financial issues down the track, when all the relief money etc dries up. All that Tathra probably needs in terms of infrastructure is better telecommunications and maybe a fire bunker (or 'community safer place' whatever that means - generally an open paddock on government owned land).

Well that's the infrastructure to which we refer....fire resistant govt buildings that can be used to shelter in if the need arises...

time spent on fire education....fire storm came ...everybody taken to surprise running for their lives..that ain't no rehearsed plan of action...panic is not what is required.....clear format on what to do and where to take shelter ....so the locals know it backwards and can do it in the dark if necessary. Its not just poor Tathra that needs these things......then you have a high tourist influx that have no idea what to do in the event of a fire.....fire storms don't give you many options....you shelter in a defensible structure or perhaps on the beach in the water or under the wharf! Thus when you have a catastrophic weather forecast for fires ...that will be impossible to halt ....you must ensure the tourists know what to do and where to go...it's not rocket science!! Much more can be done ....hand out the leaflets ,put it through media ..make sure folk know it's a dangerous environment to be in on those bad fire days ...they must know what to do and where to go!!

I might be wrong. However I think this is the first fire of note in Tathra since 1940.

Bit like people living in the bush here in Wollongong.... "fire doesn't burn down hill"
"we've never had a fire in this area"
    etc etc

This is true. I already have a stack of autumn leaves on the ground, which I could not possibly clean up on a daily basis. Admittedly, these particular trees turn very early, and I had a tree feller in a few weeks ago to look at chopping them down over winter (they're big, too close to the house, and I worry every time we have high winds). But most of my deciduous trees are only starting to change colour, or haven't yet.

Well Team Bears will have a look at his writings shortly .

You want cool burns in most FRB's.

The high intensity wildfires that have been close together time wise are causing grief with the fuel load that results as dead trees lose branches and fall over.

Fire weather warning up for Mallee and Wimmera.
I'm trying to remember the last time we saw one of these in April?

Tomorrow and Thursday should be considered as summer fire weather days. KBDI in Victoria and South NSW are very high and the high winds with the front will cause big issues if fires kick off.

Getting up into the 80s in the NW. http://www.bom.gov.au/vic/forecasts/fire-map.shtml

TFB in Mallee and Wimmera today. It's been summer here since Sept 23 last year. I'm over it. Had enough. Hurry up winter.

We note that NE Vic is listed as Severe Fire Weather today Thursday 12/April.

Not a day to wander up the Staircase nor for that matter on the contraversial Hannels Spur being discussed in other quarters.
Regardless of the state of either track....not the place to be in this weather should a fire develop!!
Of course Team Bears are assuming ....the Severe Fire Warning extends even over the NSW border into our northern neighbours Alps..

There was a planned burn for the holsworthy area for this weekend but it was called off a few days ago due to the weather forecast. A few other grass fires out west and this one just took off. Strike teams from around Sydney and Illawarra being sent.

We were prepping today for a burn planned for tomorrow when the wind and temp is forecast to drop but with this fire going, I am predicting it will be cancelled.

We had really thick smoke from the SW Sydney fire in Randwick last night. Woke up to the smell around 2pm. Blowing east straight out to sea over the Shire it seems now. Looked like it could take out a suburb or two on the fireground maps last night. There is a good radio scanner app you download and you can hear all the Emergency Services including RFS.... at 3am they sounded very professional and seemed like under control. Do a fantastic job.
