The 10 LGAs that will enter the BFDP on 1 August 2018 are Armidale Regional, Clarence Valley, Glen Innes Severn, Inverell, Kyogle, Lismore, Richmond Valley, Tenterfield, Uralla and Walcha."

Is this historically significant with regard to the date the BFDP is starting?

Noting that large areas of NSW is under drought this Friday could see a mid winter fire outbreak for the record books.

Isn't it controlled burns... I thought there is 2 big controlled burns that are causing most of this

Have been a few HR burns in our area over recent weeks. Some frightening fire behaviour at the moment. If there were any hot temps to go along with the dry, there'd be some big issues. Hopefully we get plenty of wet in spring.
Obviously a bigger issue in forest areas, as the dry will limit growth in grassland areas.

spring winds are going to the the initial concern in my view - definitely record dry for this time of the year. October 2013 BM fires , day was only 24/25 degrees + 90 Klm/h winds = carnage.

    yeas not good.
Kids all sent home from School in Ulladulla this morning.
Is shocking smoke all thru town / anywhere down wind.
I'm lucky being on the North side of the fires so clear air ....for now.
Most folk in Burrill , Kings Point etc on Sth side of town have gone home .
There is a lot of very dry Eucalypt bushland all around town , part of the beauty.
Just not expected so much this time of year.
More here if you do fb.

My most likely to be impacted mate said he was about 6km south of the fire (at about 10am), hoping the wind change doesn't fk him up.

Linescans should now be visible on rfs website or fires near me app for the major fires.
The bigger active ones seems to be
    - the 2 down near Ulladulla
    - 1 in North Nowra
    - Bilpin
    - Cattai/Maraylya

    Plenty of others about also

Can see the Bomaderry plume from Snowy Mountains Highway, near where I am staying in Dalgety. Not something I’ve ever witnessed in Winter. Looks big.

Pyrocumulus was forming on sunset... it was the last sunkissed cloud on the horizon, if you get my drift.

Well summer is going to be a prick !

Team Bears can see lots of Vicco trucks over the border in NSW..

The crunch will come later when Vicco comes under threat and then resources are scarce.
Best not to think about stuff too much....not going to be enough sky crane support....well they are never going to have enough resources come Dec,Jan and Feb.
Best just to make humouros jokes and post Shaun the sheep pics.....cos reality is going to be disturbing...is at present disturbing...outlook bleak!

Stay safe on those fire trucks .....

Wifey was visiting a friend in Bilpin yesterday when the shite hit the fan, the kids bus got a police escort home.
Howling gale, very warm and a pyrocumulus cloud.
The drive home to Mt Vic on the closed Bell Line of Road was a little eerie apparently.

A mate had some similar shots from buckajo yesterday. Another mate at Flat Rock is bloody close to the Burril fires.
    August FFS!

PS - is the the Bemboka Hills to the north of the highway that’s burning?

    North Nowra looks controlled.

Bemboka, yep north of the highway, though not too far particularly in the SE corner

Too much gets made of the media friendly big aircraft. What's impressive, the number of aircraft that have been deployed to all the fires. In many places, this would not be available at this time of year.

Reading from the commissioner today that the helicopter landed about 20m from firefighters on the ground. One of the first few crews on the scene immediately knew the pilot on visual of the aircraft. Very tough day
