Emergency Warning activated for a fire in Kitchener, south of Cessnock in the Hunter Valley. I suspect the unstable storm weather may be playing a role in the warning

Well one would have thought that Canberra had at least 500m envelop around the area but the spotting and ember attack came from quite a distance and was persistant.
So maybe Bradstock et al have missed something in their examination.

not really necessary. smoke levels in kiewa valley are very low. we had a bit of smoke yesterday but it was from the gippsland fires. I'm pretty sensitive to smoke (asthma etc) and I'm not having any issues at all.

The big bike ride around the Falls/Hotham loop is going ahead. It will cause mayhem on those roads on Sunday. Other than that it should be a good weekend up here

Yesterday I had a look on the Hotham cam there up on summit and the smoke haze was quite bad, but then this morning it was much clearer given the wind has swung around to the NW. Here's a look at the blaze now

Oh I forgot the bike ride thing....I have seen signs up previously ...cannot remember what’s closed, restricted at what time or date ???But I could see that it was going to cause grief with more than a few vehicles trying to get here or there!
So I take it that’s it’s a little safer up around Falls ,Hotham ,Dinner Plain etc etc than it was at the weekend......

If they thought there was a danger to the ride it would be cancelled or the route changed radically.

    Road closures
    • Bogong High Plains Road between Falls Creek and Mount Beauty from 5.30am to 9.00am
    • Tawonga Gap Road between Tawonga and Germantown from 7.00am to 10.30am
    • Great Alpine Road between Harrietville and Hotham Heights from 8.00am to 1.00pm
    • Bogong High Plains Road between Glen Valley and Falls Creek from 12.00pm to 8.30pm
The open parts of the loop will still be very busy.

But reports of a fire near Lake Mountain today, just when we were hoping things were cooling down a little.

I live 20 min from Ballarat, Melb side. I can't remember it being so dry this time of the year ever. Paddocks are dust.

Just been on a trip surfing around Port Stephens / Broulee NSW. So green up there looks like a different country compare to Vic.

Can't see much rain on the charts either. Need a soaking rain soon. Roll on Winter!!

I can't see it yet Mick. I've given up on any decent rain this Autumn. MJO just refuses to cooperate.

That area goes up multiple times per year every year. Typically quite fast moving as well

Severe to extreme fire danger in the Top End the last coupla days. Adelaide River District northwards to Darwin is under Total Fire Bans due to low DPs, strong gusty winds and temps in the mid 30's. Property losses at Howard Springs yesterday and there is a dangerous out of control grass fire at Bees Creek atm with the water bombers in action.

M1 at Killingworth went up this morning with the freeway closed for a while.

    Something further north as well.

This dry is really having an impact
