Depends how he went out i guess, was figuring with his timeline they wouldn't be stuffing around up at cradle and would be at Waterfall Valley last night. If they were doing side trips and/or at SK hut then Windamere for sure.

We’re just heading home from an early evening in Benalla with folks. Keeping a keen eye on the Upton Hill fire that has spread to Oak Valley Road... keep us in your thoughts folks, it’s fkn close to home. Will keep you posted as I can. Nothing to panic yet, just need to hope weather stays on our side. Still 40c but winds have eased...

I don't like those photos. They look very dangerous. When the smoke column looks like that (mushroom cloud), the whole thing can collapse and cause utter chaos on the ground. There's a name for the result which I can't remember. But I was almost caught in one in the 2006 fire at Tawonga Gap. That column collapsed and out of nowhere, a wall of fire leapt up at the vehicle in front of us. They were screaming 'Mayday' and had nowhere to go. Fortunately for all, we got a whole strike team out of there releasing the endangered vehicle and crew. Such events (collapsing smoke column) are rare.

About 10kms away from us. As @teckel said, it came under control by the time we got home around 9. I'm still unclear whether the Upton road fire was the same or different to the Oak Valley road fire, it might have been caused by ember drop but was still going later than the other. update - contained this morning.

All good here now, a gorgeous morning of 21c. It was a bit worrying driving home from Benalla and seeing the Davis road Boho fire burning from the freeway, just behind the farm of good friends. Being reported that it's under control this morning. Fortunately the wind had dropped by that time of the evening cos it was covering a decent sized area and could have been nasty. I'm so glad yesterday is over.

Glad to hear everyone here is safe, hoping @Undies can breathe ok down there in Tas!

It was a good day for fires (or lack thereof) given the conditions. Yup, a few sprang up as a result of lightning strikes when the change came through, but they were quickly controlled. Only the big pre-existing fires seem to still be an issue.

So true Tecks, and I think Vic (well north east anyways) was blessed with the wind dropping as the change came through.

Footage taken from our Firebird 300 yesterday afternoon shows the enormous smoke plume from the Timbarra fire.

The plume was 6 kilometres high and could be seen clearly from Mount Hotham. Our Meteorologist tells us that it is currently at the top of the troposphere.

Good morning from the State Control Centre in Melbourne. We'll be monitoring emergency channels today so please get in touch if you have any questions.

For the latest warnings and incident information see https://emergency.vic.gov.au

Thomson Dam fire isn't looking too good. Pyrocumulus this afternoon and CFA maps indicate it's gone right down to the shoreline.

    Your right hermon.
It looked to me like it took off about 4pm
Big pyrocumulus this arvo, can see the plume to the north of me. When the run started it was at about 750ha, now I’d say it’s nudging 2000ha. Burning all around the Thomson dam. It’s really established itself and who knows what will happen Tommoz, could really spread itself around and make a real mess up there

That Airwalk doesnot look to flash??

Plenty of time for overseas tourists to change destination though and head for some areas of Vicco.
    But ...which areas are safest??
AWT closed from Stronchs Camp southwards!
    Wilson’s Prom a bit dicey??
    East Gippsland still problematic?
On reflection just stay in the city of Melb?

NE dodging the bullet but only just!!

Vic emergency app going off here at my desk in Melbourne (I drove down yesterday)... bushfire AND floods in Euroa right now. Also got the text that our power is out at home. BOM radar showing north east under a very heavy storm cell right now... just easing off to red and orange now but 10 mins ago it was under the darkest shade of heavy on the map.

13 incidents listed in your districts (districts 22 & 23). 3 false alarms. Going ones are: Gooram, Nursery Lane Benalla, Violet Town & Lima East. All are 'small'. All others declared safe. Hope that helps.

Edit: High St Shepparton and Sheans Creek on the list.
Next edit: High St Shepp & Lima East off the list. Mansfield on the list
    Violet Town controlled.

Thanks @teckel appreciate it. +1 just said he's in bed with a migraine, didn't get much rain but saw most of the storm pass by to our north east. Gooram is close to the Polly McQuinns fire a few weeks back.

Gooram fire is at the base of Mt Wombat, we'll be able to see that one from home, Kithbrook on the other side of the hill. Tatong fire in a narrow valley of treed hills.

Did you get any rain Tecks?

    Hey all,
Thanks for the thoughts and updates. The hike went well, with rangers keeping a close eye on things and being conservative with their trail closures.

Didn’t see anything close to a fire inside the park, nothing but blue skies and rain. Outside the park is a different story. It’s so dry, and there is always a plume of smoke in sight on some ridge or hill. Best of luck to all dealing with the fires, and thanks again to all.
